Feel so ill I’m scared

Daffodils9 · 01/09/2024 18:18

Started Tues just gone. Can’t type much as so exhausted but frightened now. I’ve been seriously ill (hospital) twice before in my life and this feels like that but I can’t point to why exactly.
Fever, chills, intermittent muscle and joint pain, stomach pain, sore chest, breathlessness, cough, nausea and vomiting. Vomiting had stopped after the first couple of days but has come back today even though I’ve eaten virtually nothing for five days (handful of dry cereal, a cracker, etc.)
So completely exhausted and weak. Can’t sit up.

I’ve done three covid tests and they’re all negative. I’m vaxxed and boosted. The constant fever is worrying me - it comes down to 38/37.9 with paracetamol but never lower and never for more than half an hour so I am raging with it day and night.

I feel utterly desperate. We decided not to ring 111 today as I simply couldn’t cope with travelling an hour to our out of hours. We live rurally. I’m trying to make it to morning and hoping more local gp can see me.

Husband is worried and he doesn’t get worried by stuff like this usually. I don’t know how much longer I can go on like this. If flu how long before there is some respite? If not that then what? I am wondering about pneumonia or something?

From the Sepsis Trust:

Call 999 or visit A&E if you or another adult has one of the sepsis symptoms and Just Ask: Could it be Sepsis?

Slurred speech or confusion
Extreme shivering or muscle pain
Passing no urine (in a day)
Severe breathlessness
It feels like you’re going to die
Skin mottled or discoloured

I didn't think you were being facetious. People can have very severe infections that don't lead to sepsis. They can also have very minor illnesses that do. The reason is that sepsis is a complete overreaction by the body. Like someone setting off a fire alarm because they smell toast. It isn't a measured response. Unfortunately, that sets off a huge cascade within the immune system and causes organ damage.

Very good reply, thsnks.

Delia88 · 01/09/2024 22:18

Not to worry you but I had similar symptoms to you and was sent to hospital via ambulance due to an infection, had I left it it could have turned to sepsis. Go to hospital.

Hope you are sorting a hospital visit.

Thecatspjymas · 01/09/2024 22:32

Don't wait OP. DH had sepsis which started as bacterial strep throat.

Please don't wait

IOSTT · 01/09/2024 22:38

Also, don’t take anything containing paracetamol, as this will artificially lower a high temperature, which can sadly lead medics to think you’re not as ill as you are. Hopefully you dialled 999 hours ago, good luck 💐

ThisFunHedgehog · 01/09/2024 22:39

Please call 111 asap. It sounds like flu. Hospital can do a flu strain test. Please don’t leave this, my DH ended up with a temp of 41 with flu A.

Lucybeary · 01/09/2024 22:45

I hope you've called 999 (or 111 at the least but I think it should be 999)

Please don't be afraid to do it. How your feeling is due to the infection whatever it is. It might not be sepsis but better to act quickly. If you get medical help you will feel better more quickly and if it were something like sepsis, then you urgently need medical treatment.

I was near septic this time last year. I was afraid to call the doctor because of how I felt but once the antibiotics were in I knew I'd turned a corner. I wish you well.

Rosesandstars · 01/09/2024 22:56

Hi Daffodils,

Feeling like you might die is a symptom of sepsis, definitely phone 999 or head to A&E. Don't leave it as you are aware you might be very poorly and it can't wait.

Nat6999 · 01/09/2024 22:58

I was like this last winter with pneumonia, took 3 courses of antibiotics & steroids to clear it, as soon as I finished one course, it came back until I was prescribed a 14 day course.

justasmalltownmum · 01/09/2024 23:01

Just go to an and e.

StrongGirlsClub · 01/09/2024 23:07

I’ve just had something similar. Sickness for 24 hours followed by five days of aching limbs, severe nausea, fatigue, temperature, brain fog and no ability to eat anything. Was starting to feel like I’d never feel well again. Seven days in and just about starting to feel normal again.

Tiredofallthis101 · 01/09/2024 23:35

Hope youve gotten help OP. Whatever it is sounds like you need some tests to identify easy treatment you need.

stonebrambleboy · 01/09/2024 23:48

I hope the fact you haven't come back means you are at the hospital.

SmellyCatBumFace · 01/09/2024 23:51

Hoping OP is ok.

It's really difficult to write in a way thay conveys how it feels.

I knew I was dying, that's the only way I can really describe it. Knew with every bit of me that I was going to die. I spoke to my nurse and asked her if I'd survive and she couldn't/wouldn't answer me. That night we were told it was sepsis caused by severe bilateral pneumonia. I was severely ill and had end of life conversations with my parents and husband. My thoughts were completely consumed by my 2 little kids growing up without their Mum.

At one stage (I can't even recall how.many days in) I was just at peace with the fact I was going to die. That's when my organs were starting to shut down. Thankfully I didn't die but that feeling of absolute certainty that I was on my way out is something that will always stay with me.

I was hospitalised for a month and had a hell of a journey to recovery. I then developed an autoimmune disease which I believe was triggered by all that went on during that time.

Edited

Gosh reading this brought it all back for me. I can relate so closely to almost all of what you've written, bar the cause being pneumonia.

I remember the acceptance that I was going to die too. All I wanted was to be wheeled outside and into the park next to the hospital, just so I could be in nature one final time before I passed.

I was in for almost three weeks and made it, thank god.

Ditto to being left with significant health problems after the fact, albeit different ones to you.

I'm so glad you made it 🙂 💪🏼

Hello, I would strongly suggest getting your partner/family member to take you to A&E and just get tests. I had very similar symptoms, and was so exhausted/weak I initially just stayed and tried to tough it out, until I eventually got a GP appointment, (not wanting to "make a fuss" and take myself to A&E) they sent me straight to A&E for suspected appendicitis but it turns out my appendix had actually perforated and I ended up having emergency surgery that same day.
Just go to A&E and get the tests. Better to know and reassure yourself if it just a horrendous bout of flu that will pass.
Hope you're ok and got the advice you need from the medical professionals.

This happened to one of my DCs. It was extremely serious.

But no point MN suggesting diagnoses. OP: Call 111 and let them advise whether to go to A&E. That’s what they’re there for. I’ve always found them to be very good. Let them know of your reluctance to travel unnecessarily. They may be able to help with access to a local GP in the morning, if they think that’s a suitable option.

3luckystars · 01/09/2024 23:59

Go to A and E. you could have sepsis. You might not make it to the morning, you are not thinking straight. Go to hospital and get help.

please show this thread to your husband and don’t wait until the morning

Coconutter24 · 01/09/2024 18:29

Sounds like the flu or something similar. I’d personally give it a few more days to see how you get on

@Daffodils9

PLEASE IGNORE THIS POSSIBLY DEADLY ADVICE. Get seen tonight or Monday as early as possible.

@Coconutter24 If this is the kind of advice you normally give, you might want to rethink the username. It's frightening to me that you'd wait so long to be seen. Please make your health a priority.

OP - you cannot be diagnosed over the Internet. However, this sounds a lot like Sepsis!

Just call 999! I hope you're in hospital and getting the treatment you need.

HollyKnight · 02/09/2024 00:25

You'd rather die than travel an hour to see a doctor? Good luck to your husband explaining that to the coroner.

"Why did you not get help while your wife was lying dying...?"

IncessantNameChanger · 02/09/2024 00:26

Op hope your being seen.i have had flu three times. For me it came on from nowhere. Achey joints,at 5pm, by 9 feeling ill but weird ill, not sick or cold just feeling very unwell. By the next day feeling like death. Two days later the pain has stopped and no longer have the feeling of death but just totally weak and wiped out. Its always been just a few days of feeling like death then weeks of weakness getting over it.

Getting worse over a week sounds more than just flu.

Sia8899 · 02/09/2024 00:37

I would also go to A&E or out of hours if you’re too ill to sit up. The journey will feel bad but could save your life. Do you have a particularly bad pain anywhere (chest, stomach, side?) or are you generally nauseous and achey? Aside from the cough I felt similar when I had a bad kidney infection, I literally had to crawl to get to the toilet. When you’re seriously ill, you know it

BlackFriYay · 02/09/2024 00:53

OP have you been able to wee as normal? I ask as that's something else to watch out for that is a sign of sepsis (decreased ability to urinate)

Poettree · 02/09/2024 01:31

Hopefully you have gone in by now. I had this years ago, the feeling of doom in particular and I was too scared to go to back to sleep, with chills, cough, breathlessness, vomiting. It was flu and pnuemonia and I ended up in hospital for 10 days.
