What autumn food are you looking forward to?

I was just reading the thread about decorating for autumn (I don't) - but I do eat seasonally, and love it when the season turns and we can have stews again - so I wondered what other people look forward to around now? I've just pulled up some home-grown carrots to go with our Sunday roast chicken - but that's the only successful vegetable this year.

I'll buy a pumpkin once they come into stock - with plans (as I have every year) to make pumpkin pie. It never happens, but I end up making pumpkin pickle instead, which is lovely, and goes really well with curries. I'm really looking forward to fresh Brussels sprouts - but they're a way off yet.

Anyone else got any autumn favourites?

Making really nice soups again. Spicy butternut with ginger and chilli, curried parsnip. They always feel such a lovely treat and I kid myself they're very healthy therefore I can justify the huge chunk of bread and butter to go with it.

Hedgerow gin once it's finished (mine went in to do it's thing yesterday)

Home made blackberry jam this week. Never lasts long and always a lovely autumnal food.

Slow cooked stews, beef and ale with blue cheese is a particular favourite.

Stew and dumplings! A favourite of my kids, who particularly like pork in cinder with cheese and herb dumplings on top. I love a good stew.

RubaiyatOfAnyone · 01/09/2024 16:34

Half the butternut squash, deseed, roast with oil, rosemary and thyme, alongside onions and mushrooms. Serve with greens and a blue cheese crumbled over. Just lovely.
@Inextremis could you share your recipe for pumpkin chutney? This seems relevant to my interests…

Too many to choose, but steak and kidney pudding with a large serving of Brussels sprouts immediately spring to mind.

Thick meaty, smoky stews and and taking homemade soups to work for lunch!

Elderflower14 · 01/09/2024 17:14

Haven't made this yet but want to try it. Beef Stew Cottage Pie
My other favourite is something I always make on Christmas Eve. Sausages, bacon lardons and baked beans in a bbq sauce which I serve with wedges and Sweetcorn. I put it in the slow cooker as we always go to the pub after Christmas Eve afternoon church. Last year I didJamie Oliver Christmas Crumble for pudding. I got wonky pears and apples from Morrisons.
I do like making my own soups. Ds2 is autistic. He used to only eat what he calls "Mato Soup"(Tomato) We took great strides forward when he decided he liked leek and potato soup. I then went a step too far and decided to try him with Curried Parsnip... " No Mumma, don't make again!!"
That was me told.
Will be making L&P soup for Mum and I tomorrow...

Ham and red lentil soup , I make a big pan and have it every day til I sicken myself

Meadowfinch · 01/09/2024 17:26

The slow cooker will come out and I'll make lots of stews and casseroles, Curries & soups.

WFH, put everything in at lunch time, and it's ready to eat by 6pm. My kind of cooking 😊

PermanentTemporary · 01/09/2024 17:29

Corn on the cob. I just strip off the green, boil for 15 mins and eat with a knob of butter.

Am enjoying Briyish plums though sadly my new plum tree didn't fruit yet.

We're watching our squashes GROW in our garden so that will be fab.

Do you have a recipe for the beef, ale and blue cheese stew at all, @SuePreemly? Sounds amazing.
