What autumn food are you looking forward to?

I was just reading the thread about decorating for autumn (I don't) - but I do eat seasonally, and love it when the season turns and we can have stews again - so I wondered what other people look forward to around now? I've just pulled up some home-grown carrots to go with our Sunday roast chicken - but that's the only successful vegetable this year.

I'll buy a pumpkin once they come into stock - with plans (as I have every year) to make pumpkin pie. It never happens, but I end up making pumpkin pickle instead, which is lovely, and goes really well with curries. I'm really looking forward to fresh Brussels sprouts - but they're a way off yet.

Anyone else got any autumn favourites?

Can you not eat these things any time of the year? Confused

It's not like mince pies, that are only available at Christmas!

Have you not heard of seasonal produce? Different food is available at different times of year. How can you be an adult & not know that?

The slow cooker gets used a lot more in Autumn. Soups and stews, even a lazy lasagne.

Can't say I ever fancy heavy food in summer, but in autumn and winter it is a comfort. More people should try eating seasonally, it's how our ancestors ate, and food in season always tastes better than force ripened produce, or something that has been flown half way across the world and stored in a super market's warehouse.

Stews with mash and buttered thick bloomer bread , cottage pie , roast dinner ( nobody in my house likes roast dinner when it's warm weather ) 😋

I love making homemade soups this time of year.
Tomato and red pepper soup with lots of garlic.
Bacon, leek and potato soup
Broccoli / cauliflower cheese soup

Have to say, I’m looking forward to Fortnums mini mince pies being released

DH’s homemade steak & mushroom pie (Hairy Bikers recipe) with creamy mash & carrots.
Bangers & mash
Toad in the Hole
Blackberry & Apple Sponge with custard ( DM used to make it & I prefer it to crumble)
Homemade soups. SuePreemly homemade soups are healthy, aren’t they? Unless you whack a load of cream in.

slowlygoingcrazyhelp · 02/09/2024 19:02

ooohhh autumn food 😋

toad in the hole
buttery mash and sliced onions and gravy
decadent roast dinners with bacon bits in stuffing and rich jus made from stock
hot desserts with vanilla ice cream

Linda McCartney mince cooked with roasted onions , carrots, veg gravy then topped with flakey pastry

Tomato and chilli soup . I use any soft tomatoes , left over roast potatoes (that I freeze) Marigold Bouillion for stock .
I have tomatoes that I;m growing so some will be roasted and frozen.
SoupMaker is a doddle and lots of leftover vegetables make it in there

Apple crumble - I freeze part cooked apples and a bag of crumble mix - using porridge oats in with flour . Then defrost and cook

Cooking pumpkins roast and freeze for soup . (rather than the Hallowe'en huge ones)

Love Love Love Autumn and the cooking . Grin

The soups I make are vegan, I don;t need any oil or fat as the potatoes are roasted so have some in them.
If I make Carrot&Coriander then I don;t use cream.

So , accidently healthier .

I made lentil soup today for the first time in months. It was warming and delicious on such a damp cold day.

gingercat02 · 02/09/2024 20:40

We have just had mince and dumplings, and I had soup for lunch at work. I love soup, so that's a job for this weekend.
All the stews are winter to me, and getting back to Sunday roasts.

On the seasonal veg point, I just use frozen. Win win as far as I'm concerned...

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 02/09/2024 23:33

I made a big pot of leek and potato soup yesterday. I was WFH today so had some for lunch with grilled cheese on toast on the side, and it was delightful.

At the weekend I cooked a leek and mushroom pasta, with vegan cream (not vegan, just lactose intolerant) and Parmesan - so delicious and quick/easy. I’m looking forward to a roast chicken dinner which we don’t tend to have if it’s warmer.

Half the butternut squash, deseed, roast with oil, rosemary and thyme, alongside onions and mushrooms. Serve with greens and a blue cheese crumbled over. Just lovely.
@Inextremis could you share your recipe for pumpkin chutney? This seems relevant to my interests…

Is there a recipe you might share? Sounds delicious!

HelenWheels · 03/09/2024 07:40

i had butternut squash macaroni cheese last week, forgotten how delicious it was

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 03/09/2024 08:15

Lots of thick, main-meal soups, with masses of (largely seasonal UK grown) veg, lentils, pearl barley, etc. As a bonus they’re healthy and cheap.

I always turn the Halloween pumpkin into a Thai style soup the day after - with onion, garlic, red chilli, ginger and coconut milk. Waste not, want not! 🎃

Not quite the same, but I look forward to making apple chutney (with DD’s windfalls) and Delia’s 🎄mincemeat.

The smell of the first frosty morning, lightly tinged with woodsmoke.
