What autumn food are you looking forward to?

I was just reading the thread about decorating for autumn (I don't) - but I do eat seasonally, and love it when the season turns and we can have stews again - so I wondered what other people look forward to around now? I've just pulled up some home-grown carrots to go with our Sunday roast chicken - but that's the only successful vegetable this year.

I'll buy a pumpkin once they come into stock - with plans (as I have every year) to make pumpkin pie. It never happens, but I end up making pumpkin pickle instead, which is lovely, and goes really well with curries. I'm really looking forward to fresh Brussels sprouts - but they're a way off yet.

Anyone else got any autumn favourites?

I’ve never made Cawl, have enjoyed it when visiting DD in Cardiff for Uni.

I love making soups, curries, crumbles..... I love using my slow cooker too. I struggle with hot weather and miss the comfort foods of autumn and winter.
Pumpkin pie is delicious, I always use tinned pumpkin.

Can you not eat these things any time of the year? Confused

It's not like mince pies, that are only available at Christmas!

I don't like the heaviness of a lot of these dishes in the summer plus some of it is seasonal as in when you can get the produce.

Nothing. Autumn pisses me off. It just takes Summer away and drags us into shitty horrible Winter. Nothing about it is good.

Why bother posting on this thread or do you just love to try to make people feel bad for liking the things they do - a boring spreader of negative energy.

Back on topic, we made a beef and red wine stew today to celebrate the first day of the ‘ber months. Also looking forward to harvesting the allotment squashes and making soup with them. It’s always easier to get the kids to eat vegetables at this time of year as can hide them in casseroles, soups and pasta sauces :)

Do you have a recipe for the beef, ale and blue cheese stew at all, @SuePreemly? Sounds amazing.

Thanks @SuePreemly. I also need that in my life this winter!

Haribo16 · 01/09/2024 20:26

All of these autumn dishes sound so amazing quite a few I'm going to be searching the recipes for. I love the change in season and definitely eat things in autumn that I don't eat in the summer so it's a nice break from them and makes me look forward to them more. Stews, soups, casseroles, pies, crumbles and roasts 😋

Lovemusic82 · 01/09/2024 20:30

I’m growing squash so squash soup will be on the menu. Also like a good stew. My slow cooker doesn’t really get used in the summer, I’m looking forward to using it through autumn and winter.

Cream of Brussels sprout soup may sound weird but is absolutely delicious.

Cauliflower cheese soup is a favourite of mine, and everyone thinks that sounds weird..

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 01/09/2024 20:38

Inspired by this thread I had (tinned) rice pudding with plums and cinnamon for my pudding tonight.

Half the butternut squash, deseed, roast with oil, rosemary and thyme, alongside onions and mushrooms. Serve with greens and a blue cheese crumbled over. Just lovely.
@Inextremis could you share your recipe for pumpkin chutney? This seems relevant to my interests…

this sounds really good.how long do you roast the squash and do you peel it ?

AtleastitsnotMonday · 01/09/2024 22:40

I make a cottage pie with braising steak instead of mince, plenty of onions carrots and celery. Top it with horseradish mash. Autumn on a plate!

@FuckMeUpFlorida Your post reminded me of me dad's reaction some years ago when he came across some cobnuts at a market, which prompted one of those lovely moments when childhood memories are fondly recalled and recounted to anyone who'll listen.

Pretty much all my knowledge of cobnuts and filberts comes from then ;-)

Wow - thanks all, there are some lovely ideas here. We had roast butternut squash with dinner yesterday, for the first time in months. I'd forgotten how good it is :)
