What autumn food are you looking forward to?

I was just reading the thread about decorating for autumn (I don't) - but I do eat seasonally, and love it when the season turns and we can have stews again - so I wondered what other people look forward to around now? I've just pulled up some home-grown carrots to go with our Sunday roast chicken - but that's the only successful vegetable this year.

I'll buy a pumpkin once they come into stock - with plans (as I have every year) to make pumpkin pie. It never happens, but I end up making pumpkin pickle instead, which is lovely, and goes really well with curries. I'm really looking forward to fresh Brussels sprouts - but they're a way off yet.

Anyone else got any autumn favourites?

Just remembered a few more:
mushroom and Stilton pie
black bean soup
fresh figs with Greek yoghurt, honey and walnuts
bread and butter pudding

Beef stew with either red wine or brown beer (carbonnade flamande) and lots of squash dishes with sage. I bought a pasta maker recently so will try ravioli.

Pumpkin pie is better with tinned pumpkin anyway, you can get it at Waitrose sometimes or Whole Foods if you're near London. I make this one with jus-roll and a bit less sugar, I think 105 grams instead of 130.

classic pumpkin pie with pecan praline sauce

When one classic (old-school pumpkin pie) loves another classic (pecan pie) very much, everyone wins.

Do you have a recipe for the beef, ale and blue cheese stew at all, @SuePreemly? Sounds amazing.

I was going to ask that too.

Cobnuts!

Not technically a food/dish, I know, BUT seeing them growing on the bushes in the lanes by my house, reminds me of the end of summer as a child, before heading back to school.

spiderdave · 01/09/2024 18:16

Baked Camembert! Had some today. Only seem to eat it in autumn and winter.

jellybe · 01/09/2024 18:18

Crumble! First one of the season is in the oven as I type - apple and hedgerow blackberries.

Butternut squash soup.
Casseroles in the slow cooker.
Jam.

Love autumn! Best time of the year.

Soup! Love a homemade soup...fave is roasted tomato, pepper and chilli.

I was unaware soup was an 'autumn food'

Is soup just not a year round everyday food?

NannyGythaOgg · 01/09/2024 18:20

Started my autumn food early. Had toothache, with a very sore jaw followed by a brutal extractions (The tooth had breviously been crowned so there was nothing to get hold of and she had to dig it out)
No way have I been able to eat the planned salads and went straight into soup mode for my nutrition. (Plus ice lollies to shill the swelling)

Half the butternut squash, deseed, roast with oil, rosemary and thyme, alongside onions and mushrooms. Serve with greens and a blue cheese crumbled over. Just lovely.
@Inextremis could you share your recipe for pumpkin chutney? This seems relevant to my interests…

That sounds yummy. Going to do it.

DogInATent · 01/09/2024 18:23

Getting the slow cooker out again.
Thick soups you can almost slice for a sandwich.
Game, and a change in seasonal fish.
Local mussels.
Fruit crumbles.

I eat a lot of soup all year round.

AdoraBell · 01/09/2024 18:36

Fruit crumbles, those butternut squash and parsnips soups sound delicious 😋

Hope that tooth pain eases of quickly @NannyGythaOgg

GMH1974 · 01/09/2024 18:38

Cream of Brussels sprout soup may sound weird but is absolutely delicious.

Oh my gosh yes. I’m thinking of taking a day or two off ahead of Xmas to make lots of sweet treats. Try bbc foods toffee popcorn bark - divine. And I’d like to make a Bundt cake this year

I can also recommend a baked sweet potato with feta

I usually stop my veg boxes over the summer as I don't really enjoy the summer versions so I'm looking forward to starting these again. I love making soup especially low carb ones, and comfort food like slow cooker casseroles. And crumbles for after sunday lunch.

Stew and dumplings. 😋

Notthatcatagain · 01/09/2024 18:58

We had the first cottage pie of the season this week, blackberry jam and plum jam made, hard to choose which jam is nicest. The leeks are just about ready and the sweetcorn is disappearing rapidly

ranoutofquinoaandprosecco · 01/09/2024 18:59

I just love all the soups. Kids especially like a sausage apple and blackberry traybake.

Dolliesdisasterousdayout · 01/09/2024 19:00

I had soup today to welcome September. I love Autumn.

Sourisblanche · 01/09/2024 19:00

We had apple crumble last week because my neighbour gave me a bag of cooking apples from her tree.

As nice as it was, I’m not quite ready to give up on summer salads and bbq salmon just yet…

AdaColeman · 01/09/2024 19:02

Hot toasted crumpets dripping with salted butter.

Wild mushroom omelette.

Mussels.

Hot sausage sandwiches.

Figs, lychees and muscat grapes.

I eat soup all the year round, but in summer I mainly eat chilled soup, Greek egg & lemon, vichyssoise, gazpacho, pea & mint, that changes in autumn to thick mushroom or beetroot or carrot soup and hearty soups with beans and pasta.
