1994? Hair salons in Blackpool?

g.co/kgs/snrGTVg Three Salons at the Seaside

BBC iplayer 'Three salons by the sea'.

I hope the link works. But I'm stunned. 1994 ladies hair salons in Blackpool.

Brilliantly realised, camerawork, almost avant-garde.

But 1994?? It felt 1970s to me.

Did anyone else see it?

I saw that on FB earlier! I must watch it. All these women calling each other Mrs, and the communal funeral bag. Bonkers and charming.

coloursquare · 31/08/2024 23:08

I saw this and it's exactly how I remember Blackpool in 1994 - those ladies were just like my Grandma was then.

The blonde woman was so morbid! 😂

QueenOfHiraeth · 31/08/2024 23:12

I watched this series a while ago and loved it! I agree I'd have put it pre-90s but it was a welcome escape from today into a world gone by

Fordian · 31/08/2024 23:45

I was entranced and amazed. It felt so much earlier than 1994; but it's easy to forget that 'Cool Brittania' only really happened in our major cities.

I think most people interested in exploring this won't be floored by not having an Iplayer account, tbh. 😉

This programme was Caroline Aherne’s inspiration for Mrs Merton.

OP thank you so much for this, I had no idea it existed Smile

This was peak Blackpool for me, I used to visit around this time as a child.

I’ve only just started watching the programme on iPlayer, but when I look up Vanity Box Blackpool it shows half of a semidetached house in a row of semis, and the garden is mostly built on.

When I searched for it on Google Streetview it took me to a strange Chinese site so I left quickly. 😀

Thank you for the link. I really enjoyed watching that.

I can remember my mother still going to a similar hairdresser’s in the late 1980s. She had her hair put up in a French pleat every week, and it lasted until she went again.

Here’s an article about the programme in the Blackpool Gazette - mentioned in the programme.

ImDuranDuran · 01/09/2024 01:09

This is so lovely, simpler times.

No phones, constant chatter.

The pie man.

The funeral handbag.

Giving everyone a mint while they're under the drier.

It's making me feel happy and sad at the same time.

DrFoxtrot · 01/09/2024 11:54

Thanks for the link OP, I'm local and I'm going to really enjoy this!

Awww. It's still on Google Maps

I saw a brief clip on Facebook and immediately thought of Caroline Aherne's Mrs Merton

I’ve just put it on now.

I immediately thought of Mrs Merton too. I had to check in case it was her! The timbre of the voice and the mannerisms were so similar. The blonde owner isn't old look at her skin.

I thought it was a beautiful piece of TV.

I'm from the northwest and although we were more middle class, I recognise the types of people from my Saturday jobs etc.

haribosarebest · 01/09/2024 12:16

I think I saw this recommended on here a year or two back and absolutely loved it. I agree, has a 70s feel. Just a lovely watch

MrTwatchester · 01/09/2024 12:27

My grandparents were from Wigan. We used to spend weeks with them in the school holidays in the 80s and early 90s, and we always had at least one trip to Blackpool. Merseyside / Lancashire was just like this. Nanna had that exact hair, though she didn't go to a salon, a mobile hairdresser came to the house.

They had a really nice council house on the best road in the estate, that they'd moved into when it was brand new in the 60s. It had swirly Artex on the ceiling, and on the walls it looked like that kind of hard, spiky royal icing people did on Christmas cakes. Probably full of asbestos.

I absolutely loved those days. Watching WAC-A-Day on the telly every morning, while Grandad swept out the coal fire and Nanna made egg-on-toast. Getting prawns from the fish van. The Pools man coming by for Grandad's entries. Car boot sales at the weekends. Going to "the baths" and "the pictures". Good times.

Thank you so much for posting this. ❤️ What a wonderful slice of social history. Those ladies reminded me of my nana and her sisters.

Andnowshesatoddler · 01/09/2024 13:19

My mum used to dress just like this, I was only a young girl at the same but it's just so lovely to see kids playing outside like I used to as a kid in the first episode coming on.

Toddlerteaplease · 01/09/2024 14:25

Definitely seems like the 70's to me. The blond lady's death list made me laugh. Imagine having your hair done 3 times a week now. You'd be bankrupt!

I wonder if that's Hilary in the garden! She'd be in her 80s now I reckon?
