Do you burn candles in daylight?

I visited a friend earlier who had a scented candle burning. Her house smelt lovely but I would never have thought of lighting one before dusk.

Do you?

No, and I only use LED candles anyway because I'm worried about the fire risk of real candles.

TheActualAudacity · 31/08/2024 18:29

Yep. Light them in the morning, let them burn till the wax is transparent and then blow them out.

Let them harden and either relight my fire in the afternoon or burn another.

It’s the cooling wax that give off the scent - letting the same candle burn constantly wastes this.

I WFH also so it’s easy for me to do this.

Yes they are often burned for fragrance not lighting

I was brought up to light a candle before you start cooking because it helps to dull down the smells. Really basic, maybe beeswax candles.

Super smelly candles are not my thing.

I think this is where my thoughts have come from.. when I was a child they were used as lighting in a power cut, and scented ones weren't invented!

As long as I'm awake, I have scented wax melts burning. I have about 40 options to choose from at any one time 😂

spikeandbuffy24 · 31/08/2024 21:57

@Houseplanter I have a candle I love, my dad asked how much it was
After he peeled himself off the floor I got "in my day they were just for power cuts"

Do you get them from a specific company? I'm so picky with melts!

bakewellbride · 31/08/2024 22:06

Yes, always if we have someone over to visit.

sunsetsandboardwalks · 31/08/2024 22:17

@spikeandbuffy24 yeah, they're from a Welsh company called Teddy and Eva 🥰

postiensu · 31/08/2024 22:23

No, I'm always worried I'd forget to put it out and it would start a fire. And I've never managed to burn scented candles properly, the wick gets too short and there's too much wax around the edges.

You can stop them tunnelling by burning them until the wax is melted to the edges on the very first burn, or rescue a tunnelled candle by wrapping tin foil around it (with an opening at the top).

I like candles for the light and the smell so usually only light them when it's dark or on a grey day, but I might do a wax melt during the day.

thursdaymurderclub · 31/08/2024 22:38

yes.. i buy candles for the scent and often burn them through the day

CharSiu · 31/08/2024 22:41

They shouldn’t be used if anyone has asthma and are being linked to some health issues.

I mean what isn't linked to health issues?

I don't drink alcohol, fly or drive a gas guzzling car but I burn scented wax melts because you have to have some pleasures!
Fragrance is my vice from perfume to candles as well as plenty of fresh air

Lavender14 · 31/08/2024 22:45

I burn candles in the dark for the coziness, I burn scented ones in the day for the smell, especially if I've been cooking or I have guests coming.

Thinkbiglittleone · 31/08/2024 22:50

Yes, I think they smell lovely so we have them burning sometimes through the day.

tealpassat · 31/08/2024 22:54

@CheeseWisely can you explain the tin foil? I can't picture it and always despair of my waisted candles.

StarDolphins · 31/08/2024 22:54

only when it’s dark for me!

Everything in the world can be linked to some kind of health issue 🤷‍♀️

Lavenderandbrown · 31/08/2024 22:56

yes burn them day and eve whenever I want scent or if I have cleaned it’s my finishing touch. I wasn’t aware of the carcinogenic effect until I read about it on MN and it has given me pause but so far I haven’t given them up.

CheeseWisely · 01/09/2024 03:13

@tealpassat I found a picture that demonstrates better than I can describe!

Edingril · 01/09/2024 04:14

No because of fire risk
