Feel I missed summer 😔

I'm feeling so sad at the end of summer and the looming cold and grey. I don't know why but I feel like I didn't experience a proper summer this year. While not quite as bad as last year, it only got truly warm in my location for about a week and I was busy for most of it. And it was only "hot" as such for four or five days in total (I'm aware the south east had it better).

It was last night when I accidentally misjudged the darkness when out running that it really hit home...dark at 8 again. I miss the glorious carefree running at 9!

If I had another three months of June/July weather that would suffice but alas...

It's really ever since the pandemic that I feel panicky or anxious about missing out, I think it's because I truly did miss out then.

Anyone else?

It's been an absolutely rubbish summer. I've catered weddings almost every weekend since may and I think it's rained at pretty much all of them

Spomb · 29/08/2024 18:39

I don’t think it’s been too bad, but I’m in London. We’ve had loads of bbqs, days in the park, playing in the fountains. But it hasn’t been as good as last year. This time last year we had a heatwave, it was amazing!

Im not looking forward to the winter at all. I hate the dark evenings and dark mornings. Getting up in the dark, leaving work in the dark, it’s just so depressing!

billycat321 · 29/08/2024 18:39

Had no vegetables ready for village show in mid August. Runner beans only just starting to flower- normally harvested and in freezer by now. The seasons have gone crazy.

Illjusthavethebreadsticks · 29/08/2024 18:39

We haven't had the warm evenings once this summer 😢

Haven't managed to get to our lovely outdoor lido either.

TheGriffle · 29/08/2024 18:39

I think we’re going to get a hot Sept/Oct.

We got our swimming pool out first week of the summer hols and my girls have spent hardly any time in it, it’s just not been warm enough. My tortoise hasn’t even been out properly this year as we didn’t get enough hot days for him to bask.

Movinghouseatlast · 29/08/2024 18:41

The worst I can remember. We had lights fitted on our deck and we haven't stayed out once in the dark to use them. Not one barbeque, the pizza oven hasn't been out of the shed. I've been in the sea 4 times. It's shit.

Misthios · 29/08/2024 18:43

You didn't miss summer - it didn't happen.

Here in Glasgow we've had 200% of the usual rain for summer - twice as wet as normal. I've not worn my sandals once, and it's never been warm enough for shorts. I don't mind any of the seasons in their place, but I want July weather in July, not October weather in July.

It’s been an awful where I am. I despise autumn and winter, I hate the endless rain and I miss the light mornings and evenings. I count down the days after the winter solstice to lighter days. It’s not properly dark until 9pm here just now and I intend to make the most of the next couple of weeks to cherish the lighter nights. I heard on the radio today that there’s a good chance of another Beast from the East and my heart sank thinking about it.

Pandasandtigers · 29/08/2024 18:25

I normally love Autumn and Winter, especially love it when the nights start to draw in, but without having the opportunity to complain it’s hot and moaning about not being able to sleep in the heat, it’s taken the shine of it.
It needs to be a nice summer to be able to brace the welcome of the cold, darker nights.

Feel utterly robbed this year.

This is exactly how I feel

amoreoamicizia · 29/08/2024 18:54

You're right, @Petunia2024 , we have to make the most of the next few weeks. I love an evening walk in the light! So much better for you than being sprawled out on a sofa.

I think I'm going to resolve to either walk or run every evening until the clocks change.

It's been a terrible summer. I haven't worn any of my summer dresses or sandals anything like as much as I usually would. I haven't taken the second tog layer of my duvet off. Usually there will be a period during which we ditch the duvet and sleep just with a sheet. That hasn't happened once. It's not just you OP!!

amoreoamicizia · 29/08/2024 18:57

Oh yeah, the unworn summer dresses! 😄 On those few hot days it was a mass of summer dresses even in Sainsbury's etc., as though everyone had just decided to get them worn at least once!

I think it didn’t help that winter carried on until at least May! Then June and most of July it just rained. I’m in Gloucestershire and August has been a sunnier month for us, and the next couple of days are going to be nice - so they say! But the nights drawing in is making me anxious, I hate the darkness 🙁

We haven't had the warm evenings once this summer 😢

Haven't managed to get to our lovely outdoor lido either.

We had warm evenings for a week at the end of June. This week has been warm in the day, but autumnal in the eve

Some days in June and July, it barely got to double figures.

I'm glad we haven't got anyone telling us it's all our imagination or that we should just put on waterproofs and go for a walk! (I'm sure farmers or anyone who has a outdoor based business might have another story!)

A local parkrun changed the route in January because part of the park was flooded, it was still like it in June!

larkstar · 29/08/2024 19:19

TBH no. I was away in my camper for about 6+ weeks in all in May/June/July - I've been lucky perhaps - it's been amazing weatherwise and I'm away for another 10 days on Sunday. The thing is - if you're in a position to be able to go somewhere at short notice then you have to do it. I watch the weather forecasts all the time and look at things like the predicted accumulated rainfall over the next 5-10 days on the Windy app to decide where best to head to - invariably it's south and central - like the Cotswolds. It's definitely been a lot better than last year.

Summer missed us!

Im ancient and this is absolute worst summer I can remember. I don't really feel ready for autumn and winter, that's for sure.

Edited

I agree. It's the summer that never was.

Blueybanditbingochilli · 29/08/2024 19:23

Me too, OP. The weather has been absolutely awful this summer - one or two ‘22 degrees, sunny spells with some cloud’ days per week, with the rest either solid grey cloud or rain.

Due to being refused annual leave we haven’t been away anywhere or had any time together as a family, just tag teamed our leave to look after the kids while trying not to go out of our minds with boredom as half the events are rained off.

Sorry but it really does annoy me when I hear people gloating about ‘loving the rain/cooler weather’ which they get 90% of the year anyway.

Taleas0ldastime · 29/08/2024 19:24

The weather was horrible...just wet and humid most of the time. Amd work was manic so i didn't get to take as much annual leave as I should have so feel like summer just passed me by.

StopStartStop · 29/08/2024 19:25

One of those 'If you blinked, you missed it' summers. Not too many days with sweat pouring down my back. Yes, I like the cooler weather.

Courgettesareready · 29/08/2024 19:27

It's been awful until August and it's going to be nice into September but agree, feel completely robbed of June and July baking days 😔

Doggymummar · 29/08/2024 19:27

I've had two days without my electric poncho, Im sitting under it now. Blooming cold. I'm in Brighton

Tralalaka · 29/08/2024 19:28

late July and August have been glorious

Hollyhocke · 29/08/2024 19:35

Yup pretty much as crap as last year. Coldest June on record. Patchy July and August. Hasn't been warm enough to sit out in the garden here of an early evening more than handful of days this summer.

I am just praying, praying we don't get the rain we got Sept 2023-April 2024. It was just such an awful long autumn/winter

AntigoneFunn · 29/08/2024 20:20

I'm on the south coast and while we've had a few runs of rainy days it's been largely absolutely fine since about June. We've had regular temps of 22-25 and lots of sunny days.

I don't like mega hot weather anyway. But I really feel for those in the North who have had endless grey rainy days.

What makes me laugh though is people moaning about the weather being shit on the weekends like it has any concept of the fact that we have this arbitrary 5 days on/2 days off rota that it should adhere to. GrinGrinGrin

It must depend where you are....

We've just been away in the south west, and we had some sunshine but I'm not convinced it reached 20° the whole week.
Saturday it bucketed down all day (from south west , all the way home to central england) Sunday and Monday we're dry with sunny spells but breezy and needed long sleeves both days.....
none of which, imo, is glorious, for August.
