Feel I missed summer 😔

I'm feeling so sad at the end of summer and the looming cold and grey. I don't know why but I feel like I didn't experience a proper summer this year. While not quite as bad as last year, it only got truly warm in my location for about a week and I was busy for most of it. And it was only "hot" as such for four or five days in total (I'm aware the south east had it better).

It was last night when I accidentally misjudged the darkness when out running that it really hit home...dark at 8 again. I miss the glorious carefree running at 9!

If I had another three months of June/July weather that would suffice but alas...

It's really ever since the pandemic that I feel panicky or anxious about missing out, I think it's because I truly did miss out then.

Anyone else?

oh it feels like friday today

I'm so despondent

spikeandbuffy24 · 29/08/2024 21:23

I said the same to someone today. I've barely worn any summer clothes or my new sandals
Not had a night where I couldn't sleep with the heat
Been outdoor swimming twice. Like I blinked and it was gone

It must depend where you are....

We've just been away in the south west, and we had some sunshine but I'm not convinced it reached 20° the whole week.
Saturday it bucketed down all day (from south west , all the way home to central england) Sunday and Monday we're dry with sunny spells but breezy and needed long sleeves both days.....
none of which, imo, is glorious, for August.

I’m London and it has been lovely apart from last Saturday. I’ve been in vest tops all month and it was nearly 30 degrees on Wednesday and we sat outside until 10pm. It seems to be settling at about 23 most days but nice and sunny

Wrennyjenwren · 30/08/2024 08:02

Yea summer has been pretty shit this year.
I don't get down about it though as I quite like the craziness of Autumn and Christmas, and I quite like snuggling up in my electric blanket.

voxnihili · 30/08/2024 08:14

I’m in the SE and for school summer holidays it feels like it’s been the best we’ve had for years. But it’s been a really short spell. Normally I’m sure we get 2-3 months of nice weather prior to schools breaking up and then it’s awful until September. I’m happy it’s been nice while I’m off work, but I definitely don’t feel ready for it to be autumn again.

RampantIvy · 30/08/2024 08:25

I think last summer was worse than this one where I live (South Yorkshire). It took a while to get going, and we haven't had any really hot days, but it has been pleasantly warm with not much rain on the whole since about mid July. Spring was a cold damp washout, and I hope the local farmers have managed to make the most of the recent weather.

The weather for the next few days is hovering around 19/20 degrees, but dry.

brimfulofpacha · 30/08/2024 09:22

I think last summer was very bad for rain (NW) but we had a couple of stretches of sun before the school hols and then maybe a week or so just after schools went back so not terrible constantly. This summer has just been endlessly grey since winter, I think we e had maybe only 2 or 3 consecutive days of sunshine. Still lots of rain but I feel like less than last summer. Some humid days but still thick cloud. I feel very depressed! We didn't really have a nice spring either so it feels like it's been one long autumn/winter since spring 2023. I don't really like it too hot anyway as I burn very easily, but it would be nice to get some actual sun rather than just muggy greyness. It's sunny here this morning but already clouding over. I've put some washing out, but I don't think it will dry as it's freezing, feels more like one of those crisp sunny November mornings than August.

MiddleAgedDread · 30/08/2024 09:27

It's not you, it's definitely been the weather! We've had short hints of summer but I went out for dinner earlier in the week and dug out a summery dress that's been in a storage box, along with others, since the end of last summer. Last year I was wearing these dresses daily to work! Although admittedly, I'm working in an office with better air con this year. I was also shocked by the darkness the last couple of evenings. The weekend looks quite nice though, I don't need it to be roasting, just dry and sunny will do me.

In Gloucestershire I've easily managed to get a great tan - could you move somewhere warmer if you're up North?

Also I'd suggest that Winter haters get some hobbies! You don't have to do nothing in Winter. There are loads of delightful indoor activities like anything crafty, arty, baking bread/cakes/cookies/other treats, reading, watching films, board games... I don't understand the misery at all.

Alainlechat · 30/08/2024 09:31

I'm in the south east and think it's been ok once it got started, which did seem later than usual.

Also had a wonderful week of weather in the South West, a lovely weekend in Wales and just returning from 6 days in East Anglia, again it's been beautiful.

I don't hate the winter, but I have really disliked relentless grey, dull, windy, rainy or any combo of the above, weather for literally months on end.

I like aspects of all seasons, I can cope with winter if I know spring, and then summer is coming! But the first 6 months of this year seemed to be one grey wet monotonous "season". Winter wasn't particularly cold, spring was wet, and then the first part of summer was cool and wet.
I run - I like the odd snowy (not icy) run in winter, cross country etc, spring runs are usually lovely but this year, mostly grey and then summer using footpaths and trails. I still have, but I feel like my trainers barely dried out til July. I'm surprised I haven't got trenchfoot!
(I also love indoor hobbies, but it's not unreasonable to want a bit of sun throughout the year, and more defined seasons!)

I have plenty of hobbies thank you @PouthSark
It still doesn't stop me from disliking winter.

Driving to my hobbies in the cold, dark and wet is not as preferable as driving out on a warm and sunny evening, and I hate anything to do with arts and crafts.

I don't understand why you don't understand why many people hate winter. Are you always this lacking in social awareness?

SugarMiceInTheRain · 30/08/2024 20:50

I definitely feel like we didn't get a summer. So little warmth and sunshine. We didn't get the BBQ or firepit out once! I feel really hard done by and quite depressed. Most of my summer wardrobe hasn't even had an outing. My office at work is freezing and it just feels like we've gone straight to autumn.

Pineappleprep · 30/08/2024 20:54

It has been 20°c+ for most of July/August for most of England. We've had a few weeks of 25°c+ weather, unsure how you've come to the conclusion we've not had a summer.
If you don't like the English weather, move abroad.

Newsenmum · 30/08/2024 20:55

I think the issue was it took a reaaally long time to get warm and then it’s been very patchy so if you’re at work that day, you miss it. Kind of why I hate summer in the uk tbh. Didn’t care when I always went abroad but can’t do that with kids atm :(

good think about autumn is it’s less of let down when bad!

Agreed. Loads of things we didn’t get out either.

HelpMebeok · 30/08/2024 20:58

I'm dumbfounded. It feels like it's been sunny here for 6 weeks at least. I think it's been one of the best summers in ages maybe with the exception of 2020 and 2022.

Caravaggiouch · 30/08/2024 21:00

I feel like the weather has been pretty good this school holidays! There hasn’t been a heatwave or anything but it’s been pretty bright and sunny more often than not and I can only think of a couple of properly rainy days in the 6 weeks.

mum2jakie · 30/08/2024 21:07

Midlands here - this summer has been absolutely shit! It's the first week that it hasn't rained (much) - just before the kids go back to bloody school!

It’ll be raining too much to see it.

Scandiviews1 · 31/08/2024 15:56

In the north we've had a few days of sunshine but usually wake up to cloud. The whole summer. The temperature has been perfectly fine but it's seeing blue sky and sun that I've missed this year. It has also rained or drizzled relentlessly. I'm assuming the chirpy ones on this thread live in the south or actually in another country entirely.
