Can't believe how bad it's got and how little the world seems to care.

https://www.theguardian.com/global-development/article/2024/aug/26/taliban-bar-on-afghan-women-speaking-in-public-un-afghanistan

Women are now banned from speaking in public as well as doing anything else you could imagine that makes up a life - such as going outside or having a job or getting an education. Suicides are skyrocketing of course. How can we tolerate this? We don't have have a route for women from Afghanistan to apply for asylum here.

Does anyone have any tips of what we can do as ordinary people in the UK? which orgs are best to donate to?

Women for Afghan Women (WAW)
A grassroots organization that promotes the rights of Afghan women and girls in Afghanistan and New York. WAW accepts donations in US dollars, PayPal, Facebook, checks, stocks, and charitable bequests.

UN Women UK
Accepts monthly donations to support their team on the ground in Afghanistan. If the campaign exceeds its targets, any extra funds will be used for other humanitarian disasters that affect women and girls.

Afghanaid
Accepts donations to support Afghan women facing poverty, exclusion, and food insecurity. They also have appeals for clean water, decent toilets, and good hygiene for Afghan women and girls.

Women for Women International
Has a program called Stronger Women, Stronger Nations that has reached over 127,000 women in Afghanistan since 2002. They also have an ActWithAfghanWomen program.

I wish we could enable every woman who wants to leave Afghanistan to escape. Leave the misogynistic men to each other.

coldcallerbaiter · 28/08/2024 22:42

Women are not allowed to be doctors there and women cannot be
treated by a male doctor for gynaecology, so go untreated.

But the routes talk is nonsense, the whole or most of the female population of Afghanistan cannot claim asylum here or elsewhere. Just like all brutal times in history, it just has to play out until people rise up or better times follow. It is sad to watch. Those charities are worthy causes, as long as the regime keeps its hands off the funds.

https://lindanorgrovefoundation.org/ This is a small charity in Scotland. It helped evacuate some women this month https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/c20lrzpxklro . The charity was set up after a tragedy involving the founders' daughter Linda, in Afghanistan.

The Linda Norgrove Foundation gives grants to fund education, health and childcare for women and children affected by the war in Afghanistan.

We should put more pressure on the government to oppose this in the strongest terms.

Newgirls · 28/08/2024 22:53

Horrified by what’s happening. It’s overwhelming to think of it but we must. Thanks for the links to the groups. Can countries like the UK apply pressure?

Wishitwasstraightforward · 28/08/2024 22:53

Ugh this is appalling.

I'd like to better understand how asylum in the UK might work for women from Afganistan. I'm not being goady, just curious. If they managed to get here presumably they would have a legitimate claim for asylum because of the way that they are treated as a woman in their home nation?

I can't believe it's been allowed to slide back to this. I'm so fed up with the west selectively giving a shit

Razilla · 28/08/2024 22:57

Support Israel and campaign in the strongest terms against the Islamic Republic in Iran. They are the the ones driving this right wing ideology which weirdly seems to be supported by the supposedly " leftist' west right now. Change will have to come from within. Idiots supporting " the river to the sea" in America and Western Europe are adding to the problem. Let's see some marches for Afghan women..

The millions of Afghan men seeking sanctuary in Europe can do alot in every safe country they are in accross Europe.
They can organise protests, marches, advocate for Afghan womens rights online through petitions & blogs.
Afghan men seeking refuge in the west need to be the voice of all the Afghan women left behind.

Onand · 28/08/2024 23:00

As utterly abhorrent this is, it is the reality for so many women’s and girls in Afghanistan and plenty of other countries. Truly medieval in the 21st century, but it’s to be expected when you see the state of the men in charge of that country, a cesspit of evil.

They cannot seek asylum now as they are not allowed cross international borders. Afghan women cannot even walk out their front door without a male chaperone.

Support Israel?! Really

Wishitwasstraightforward · 28/08/2024 23:12

@Autumnalove so it is almost impossible for them to leave Afghanistan due to the rules women are expected to follow? Awful.

That notwithstanding, if they did get here would they hopefully have a legitimate claim for asylum given the rules for women in their country of birth?

Haveanaiceday · 28/08/2024 23:13

Asylum is not the answer there are somewhere around 20 million women and girls there being oppressed. Plus they should not have to leave their homeland.

Absolutely agree. I'm not suggesting that asylum is a solution.

I'm curious though, to understand whether a woman from Afghanistan would be offered asylum here? I really hope she would.

An Afghan woman would most definitely be offered refugee status.

But how can she get here? It's horrific, the women are trapped.

Menopausalsourpuss · 28/08/2024 23:30

Yes I agree about Iran. There is an Iranian community in the UK who often protest at the embassy in London (bizarrely one of them was the guy who kept being removed by the police for his Hamas are terrorist sign at the anti Israel/Pro Palestine protests. I really feel for the women in Iran and Afghanistan and wish we could only give women from these areas asylum.

The Afghani men seeking refuge in the west need to protest & advocate like the Iranians & Ukrainians. The Afghani women need to Afghani men here in Europe to be their voice. How is it fair that millions of men can leave but the women are trapped?

TheLocust · 28/08/2024 23:38

Thanks for the list @cupcaske123, will make a donation.

I certainly won't be donating anything to Amnesty, since they seem to think these poor women could simply identify out of this situation. Fuckers.
