What can we do?? Horrified by what is happening to women in Afghanistan and want to do something

Can't believe how bad it's got and how little the world seems to care.

Women are now banned from speaking in public as well as doing anything else you could imagine that makes up a life - such as going outside or having a job or getting an education. Suicides are skyrocketing of course. How can we tolerate this? We don't have have a route for women from Afghanistan to apply for asylum here.

Does anyone have any tips of what we can do as ordinary people in the UK? which orgs are best to donate to?

For once, Iran is not the problem here. The Taliban are Sunni and Iran is Shia. Theologically they hate each other (although they agree that men are great and women should STFU). They occasionally have gun battles along their mutual border.

There was a time when the Taliban had close relationships with certain Gulf states, but that's lessened recently. Plus we have to be nice to the Gulf states because of oil and arms sales and we like going to Dubai for holidays (and containment of Iran).

All Western governments have condemned the Taliban as far as is possible, but they only understand force. We tried that, to the tune of a trillion dollars and over three thousand coalition deaths, and it didn't work.

As the saying goes, think global, act local. If you can't help Afghan women (some good charities have been mentioned), see if you can help other women who are victims of religious misogyny nearer to home. It all adds up.

Yes.....it's literally the only country in the ME that has proper rights for women. They're not perfect and have made mistakes in the war but they are trying to do the right thing, they want peace ( as do most Gazans I think) but there are a lot of the Gazan population who have been radicalised and support Hamas... So the solution is tricky and will take a lot of input from other countries.

People have died in a war started by Hamas. Israel, whilst not perfect, has warned civilians of their targets in advance ( at their detriment). Any complaints of sexual assault are being investigated by the IDF and they will be punished. Because that is obviously not acceptable. And that is the difference. Morals in the govt and most normal people. Hamas has no morals. Hezbollah have no morals...they are terrorist organisations and they hate Christians just as much as Jews.

Without being overly cynical, there isn't a way to solve this without having a Putin-esque leader waltz in there and try intrument regime change.

Israel is currently being investigated for genocide. You're obviously aware that Gaza has been under occupation for decades and the war wasn't started in a vacuum. You're also probably aware that the rape of a detainee by the IDF was caught on film and members of the Israeli government said it was justified.

People who abide by the Geneva Convention could be said to have morals, not those currently committing war crimes. Israel has been killing people including thousands of children, indiscriminately. Bombing schools and hospitals and essential infrastructure. They have also been using Palestinians as human shields and killing people around aid trucks.

Please don't derail this thread into yet another row about Israel & Palestine. It's supposed to be highlighting what's happening in Afghanistan.

It’s so sad. I was watching something at the weekend about an Afghan female journalist who managed to get to the UK whilst her family were left there. Her sisters not being able to do anything, such as go to school. It was so sad to think that millions of women are suffering once again at the hands of men. It’s abhorrent. Women are treated like animals in that medieval place.

I don’t know what the answer is to help them, as it’s so ingrained and deep rooted in medieval ideology. How do you even begin to unpick it? As soon as the west left after years there, they crept back out of the woodwork and started dictating again. It’s passed down from generation to generation and sadly I can’t see it getting better any time soon. Those poor women and girls, it’s beyond heartbreaking.
