What would you do re: weed

Neighbours , respectable youngish couple with small children, growing weed in greenhouse at end of garden . We can smell this throughout our garden and our kids don't want to be outside . It's really strong smelling and sometimes I can smell it inside our house !! Or maybe I'm imagining it now, dunno ! What would you do ? I don't know them v well, just for chit chat , moved in about year ago. Friendly enough . It is a biggish greenhouse with weed growing inside...smell drew me to notice it, and I can see the leaves growing as the top of the greenhouse is visible from our side. Bit of a dilemma. Not sure if it's for personal use or what. Don't know how to broach it but it's stopping us use the end of our garden.

How odd, cannabis plants don’t have a particular smell when they are green and growing. Their flowers do but that’s it.

RainbowZebraWarrior · 28/08/2024 16:56

Crikey. They are brazen if they are growing a crop in a greenhouse.

I guess if you could get photos, then you could send these to the police.

Beginningless · 28/08/2024 16:57

I love the smell of weed! I can’t imagine needing to avoid the smell. But anyway. Seems unlikely someone would grow an illegal plant in full view of neighbours at the end of their garden. Could you be mistaken?

Boredlass · 28/08/2024 16:58

I’d be very surprised if it was weed. It doesn’t really smell when it’s growing and no one would do it so brazenly

Wizzywoo18 · 28/08/2024 16:59

You have my sympathy as I have a neighbour who smokes weed - something my seller strangely forgot to mention during conveyancing. 🤔

I think getting the police involved would be the nuclear option - and if it's for personal use, I don't know how much they would do.

I would talk to them first. People can be really oblivious about the smell when they're the ones smoking it.

It stinks when it is in flower. I have known people who "brazenly" grew it in their gardens.

I can't bear the smell either op.

Puttingupscaffolds · 28/08/2024 17:03

Well the leaves are the same shape as cannabis leaves and ot smells like it ! Is there anything else it could be ? Not everyone likes the smell ! It's overpowering.

Do you have a photo you’d be willing to share?

A housemate of mine was growing some in pots on the roof years ago. One windy day blew the pots off the roof and then he was panicking thinking the police had seized them and were going to come by an arrest him. Smoking the stuff can make you a bit paranoid.

Allie47 · 28/08/2024 17:06

You're probably smelling them smoking it tbh as you shouldn't be able to smell it that strongly while growing in a greenhouse 🤷‍♀️

Hmmmm....don't think I'd risk it.

Definitely not....I know what is smells like when it's being smoked. I'm telling you ...I've googled what else it could be and nothing else of any relevance with the same shape of leaf comes up. It could be for personal use but it's a massive amount if it is...

I think WE'D have to move if police were involved !

I didn't say it was legal to grow for personal use but it creates a massive dilemma for me.........

Police don't prosecute / charge you if it's only a few plants. It really isn't worth it. There are just far too many people doing it. (Court time and costs / jail space etc)

My neighbour wasn't prosecuted when he burned the fucking house down with his equipment. He had around 10 fully grown plants.

Growers aren't stupid. 10 fully mature plants every six weeks, often in multiple places (their own house, girlfriends house, a rented house; that's what my neighbour did, rented a small house for the sole purpose of growing)

They know they are likely to get away with it I'm afraid. So whilst it isn't set in stone, it's certainly widely known. Especially with the growers (I'm an ex copper, things change a lot, but that's the way it is at the moment)

Also, possession can relate to any element of the product, so dried leaves, resin or the actual plants themselves.

It does apparently smell a lot if you grow it in a confined space. So I'm told.

Before anyone asks no I'm not growing it myself. I'm on an international gardening group and a lot of people grow it for personal use in other countries. I asked a few questions about it on there before.

You can only grow it in the UK if you have a sepicial licence which is insanely expensive to do as you can grow it to make the medical CBD oil which is legal in the UK on prescription.

I've attached a photo for identification.

BobbyBiscuits · 28/08/2024 17:44

Are you definitely sure it's cannabis? Have you seen them smoking it? Tending to it? Eventually they'll do a harvest and that should be pretty obvious. It's quite unusual for people to do a grow so openly like that?
I personally wouldn't call the cops but I'm pro-cannabis myself. I understand some people aren't though.

MigGril · 28/08/2024 17:50

As to what to do about it though that's a issue. As already said unless they bare growing a lot the police won't do much. Give them a telling off maybe. But the does anyone else overlook their garden would they know it was you who'd reported it?

It's a bit daft of them to grow it so openly as anyone could report it. They will have to heat the greenhouse in the winter or bring them indoors. They won't grow in the UK in an un heated greenhouse they need to be quite warm.

LlynTegid · 28/08/2024 17:57

Are they out at any time of day, long enough for you to go in there and somehow do something that would cause the crop to slowly die? Turn off any heating, say by cutting a wire? Or remove it all and dump it somewhere?

What are the age of the children? Would the school be interested as a safeguarding issue, or even want to know in case the children mention it to other pupils?

Sadly the police would probably not be interested enough. I wish that were not the case, because then it would be a reasonable option.

Whoyoutakingto · 28/08/2024 18:21

I thought it need a lot of heat and light to grow, from my experience of watching police documentarys on tv🤣🤣

CheeryUser · 28/08/2024 18:26

The police will be interested. It could be personal use or for a bit of extra cash as part of something bigger.
