My beautiful 12 year old lab has been slowing down a lot lately but today she was visibly very unwell. I'm at the vets and they have done tests. She has a mass on her liver. I don't think she is coming home. I'm on my own at the moment and am struggling to cope. How do I manage this?

So sorry you had to let Sadie go. Though it's the kindest thing to not let them suffer, it's still so hard. Take care and allow yourself time to grieve for her. 💐

Having a job to read, watery eyes must be hayfever. Had a little toy Phalene put to sleep last year almost 18. He was such a character. He had lots of different woods for what he wanted. Also have a 9 year old border collie.(And a year old BC) Before him another BC she was almost 18 as well, but she was just sort of "there" very quiet, just pootled along. The other one, she was 12, this was almost 16 years ago. Took the 3 dogs for a forest run. She keeled over like a log. I thought she was dead.she got up,ran straight back to the car. Took her straight to the vet. Scan, splenic tumour which had ruptured. Secondary on liver. They said she would bleed out in an hour. Decided that wasn't fair. Rang DH at work 12 miles away, he didn't make it. The vet said it was extremely unlikely she would have survived surgery.dh still says we should have done it. This isn't all of them. Everyone loved spoilt and the cats.sending huge hug.

Oh OP I’m so sorry for your loss. It’s incredible how dogs have such a profound positive impact on our lives. If she was in pain with a mass, know you’ve done the right thing rather than let her suffer. She’s a rescue and you can see from your beautiful photos how happy and loved she was, you’ve given her a lovely life. Reading your thread has bought tears to my eyes!

I have a dog myself who is getting older and it’s terrifying the thought of losing her, but I’d have her PTS if she was suffering even though it’d be t
so hard.

Allow yourself to grieve and don’t be ashamed of your grief. Dogs are so much more than ‘just pets’ they truly are members of the family xx

I'm so sorry for your loss. You've made the hardest, most selfless decision a pet-owner ever has to make, and Sadie was a beautiful girl who knew how loved she was Flowers

Beautiful beautiful Sadie.

Labs are so amazing.

She knew you loved her. And you are so kind to her, not letting her suffer.

I am sorry for your pain.

I too have a lab who is 11 and is starting to shows signs of her age like trembling back legs.

She has gone now. She summoned up a wag of her tail for me but her eyes were so sad. Thank you all for helping me through it and making me feel less alone.

I’m so sorry for your loss, i know there really are no words I can say to help you feel less broken right now, but i just want to thank you for loving her - for giving her a life full of love and happiness, for bringing her into your family, and making her a part of it. Thank you for caring for her, thru thick and thin, for being there during the best and worst times, and for saving her from pain and suffering (even when it means your heart will break) - thank you for everything over the last twelve years; I am positive Sadie would’ve told you this herself if she could. I believe her tail wag was a final little thank you to you and an acknowledgement that no matter what, she’ll be with you always.
As tough as it is, you’ve done the right thing. I hope you can find some comfort in that, and in the knowledge that nothing will break the bond you share. She’ll be in your heart forever.
🙏🏼💝🐾 Sending love and strength to you
