I'm at the vets. My dog is very ill. Help me get through this.

My beautiful 12 year old lab has been slowing down a lot lately but today she was visibly very unwell. I'm at the vets and they have done tests. She has a mass on her liver. I don't think she is coming home. I'm on my own at the moment and am struggling to cope. How do I manage this?

Thank you for sharing the photos, she is beautiful and I am sure she is very loved and always will be.
She has had a wonderful life with you and your family and will always be a part of it.
I am thinking about you all and hope the next 24 hours go as well as they can x

Been there with 2 labs. It's shit.

Being brutal - she's 12 and has a mass. Don't keep her hanging on. Made that mistake with my first lab and regret it bitterly. Vets tend to give you 'options' and don't want to suggest putting to sleep. This is your opportunity to do one last thing for her - make her end quick and peaceful.

I don't want to prolong her suffering. I won't let her hang on.

She a beautiful, clearly much loved girl. I’m sure you’ll do right by her now.
Sending a great big hug.
xx

Taluulaah · 28/08/2024 13:24

Beautiful doggo, I can see why she is so loved, OP. It’s absolutely heartbreaking when they aren’t well, and I know you’ll be feeling utterly helpless, but I am certain you will know the right thing to do when it is necessary. As difficult as it is, don’t forget that your darling Sadie holds nothing but love and trust in you, and as long as you’re beside her, that’s all that matters.
I truly hope she comes thru this, am rooting for you both OP. Sending love ❤️

LadyGrillingSole · 28/08/2024 13:25

I'm so sorry. You are doing everything in your power to take the very best care of her, and I'm sure she knows that.
Dogs really are family and seeing a family member poorly is incredibly hard so try to focus on making the most of the time you have with your beautiful Sadie.

JackieGoodman · 28/08/2024 13:27

Sending virtual hugs Flowers
Remember this sad time is relatively short, you have had 12 years of good times (with some obligatory mischievous times)

northchesterforest · 28/08/2024 13:29

Sadie looks like a beautiful soul. They really are the best. Sending you much much love.
What a privilege to live a life so beautiful from end to end, that's all any of us can ask for Flowers
I bet you've had some great moments with her and she is still here for now. She really does know you love her

What has helped me in this exact situation is the idea that I, am the strong consistent presence in my dogs life and I now step up to lead them with confidence and love through this passage from life to death.

Your strength will keep your dog calm and their physical life will end without undue pain or suffering. The absolute best gift we can honour our dogs with.

MamaBobo · 28/08/2024 13:32

What a beautiful girl. You have shared so many wonderful times with her and you are her world. You will be making her feel loved and safe, and you are strong and will do the right thing for her when the time comes. I’m so sorry that you find yourself here on your own today. Sending hugs, and a hand hold, x

BiscuityBoyle · 28/08/2024 13:37

She’s a beautiful girl. You will make the right choice for her.

Lupin61 · 28/08/2024 13:42

What a beautiful girl! It will be such a comfort for her to have you with her in her final moments and I’m sure she will drift away peacefully and full of content after having such a wonderful life with you all. So many dogs are terribly treated in their short lives but it sounds like Sadie had a great few years full of happiness x

ErrolTheDragon · 28/08/2024 13:42

FlowersI'm so sorry, it really is tough.
You're not completely on your own, this world of online friends and strangers who've been in a similar place are here for you. I'm sure some of your neighbours will be too.

ApolloandDaphne · 28/08/2024 13:43

DH and I have just agreed we will let her go. My heart is breaking.

Holding your hand.

siabm · 28/08/2024 13:49

I had to say goodbye to my elderly dog yesterday op.
It hurt incredibly, never felt a pain like this, as real as when I've lost a human family member. I get it. I've been crying on and off ever since.
My dogs passing was very quick and very peaceful and as she passed I had a huge wave of relief for her, as well as huge sadness. I was just so relieved for her that she wasn't struggling anymore.
Grief is the price we pay for
love. 💐💐

DoloresDelEriba · 28/08/2024 13:49

That’s a very brave and selfless decision and is probably the right thing to do. Doesn’t make it easier. You are a wonderful dog mum. Give her the biggest hug.

northchesterforest · 28/08/2024 13:51

You are a kind and loving person with that decision. Take care of yourself OP Flowers I'm so glad you have each other

MadisonAvenue · 28/08/2024 13:51

I’m so sorry to read about your beautiful Sadie, bless her. You’ve given her a wonderful happy life.

It’s the hardest yet kindest decision, and I understand just how you’re feeling as it’s a decision we had to make for our beloved 12 year old boy just 11 days ago. It’s heartbreaking, I’ve never felt pain and sadness like this.

Sending much love.

Icannotremembermyusername · 28/08/2024 13:52

Sadie is absolutely beautiful and having a lab girl myself, they are such a huge presence in your life . The joy they bring is like nothing else and I am sending her and you the biggest hugs ever. What a wonderful owner you are, you are doing the absolute best for her, and I hope I will have your courage and strength when my time comes. She has had the best life and is now an old lady so she will be ready to cross over. Be kind to yourself and remember all those wonderful memories ❤️

EineReiseDurchDieZeit · 28/08/2024 13:53
