Do you wear headphones and listen to anything when you walk the dog?

I don’t, I feel disrespectful to the dog.

I’ve got an audiobook I’m enjoying and I’d quite like to listen as I take the dog out just now (on lead so no issue with keeping tabs on where he is). I’d feel guilty though, is this weird?

Me too - I feel I need to interact with mine, and tell him what a good boy he is at regular intervals, or point out interesting things to him, generally other dogs, or cats, as he likes them.

KenAdam · 27/08/2024 21:16

I do but not on a high volume. More just some background noise. Or I’ll listen to an audiobook that I can’t listen to at home thanks to the bedlam. 🙄

stayathomer · 27/08/2024 21:18

Same here, never. As a teen with the dog though, always!!!

KraftServices · 27/08/2024 21:19

Disrespectful to the dog...?? I've really read it all now 🤣

If you're that worried, put the volume low, or I just put one earphone in instead of both because I like to hear what's going on around me.

MonsteraMama · 27/08/2024 21:21

Yes, that's what headphones with ambient noise settings are for. I can listen to my book or music and still hear the dogs and anyone around me that might need my attention. They don't care if I'm listening to a book or not. They're dogs.

CheeseWisely · 27/08/2024 21:21

I listen to podcasts when I take my baby out for a walk (although I still chat gibberish at him when he's awake).

RickyGervaislovesdogs · 27/08/2024 21:23

No, I’d be too scared. I walk in the woods though, if that makes a difference.

Poggishairtufts · 27/08/2024 21:24

I don't do it, my dog might want to chat with me

hattie43 · 27/08/2024 21:25

I'd like to but I just feel I need to be aware of what's happening around me . I feel disconnected when wearing my ear buds

honeyfox · 27/08/2024 21:25

I usually have a podcast on, I can still tell her she's a good girl when she does a wee.

outcrops · 27/08/2024 21:26

I don’t because I’m engaging with my dog. He’s hard work though so needs it! I love a walk alone with music through headphones

SuePreemly · 27/08/2024 21:26

Depends what sort of walk it is! A pootle round the village yes, because dogs are reading their peemails and sniffing and generally chilling on lead

If they're off lead I am doing a training walk and need to focus on what's going on

Coughsweet · 27/08/2024 21:26

He’s a spaniel, he might want to engage in quality bantz at any given moment. I wouldn’t want to let him down.

I have one earbud in in case of approaching murderers.

frannygallops · 27/08/2024 21:28

I wear bone conducting headphones then I can hear my podcast, the dog, and approaching murderers.

BestIsWest · 27/08/2024 21:29

One earbud here too. The dog only wants to sniff. I become invisible to hoim once we leave the house.

grumpypedestrian · 27/08/2024 21:30

Nope because I have conversations with my dog while we’re walking 😂

She has her own voice, I stop if I see someone as I’ll look weird.

PeacockHat · 27/08/2024 21:32

I do because my dog is getting on a bit so I spend most of the time standing around whilst he sniffs. It'd take us an hour to go half a mile and it's bloody boring. I still tell him he's a good boy and give treats but he's mainly engrossed in the brilliant scents he's found.

thistimelastweek · 27/08/2024 21:32

I walk my dog without headphones because I like to have my own quiet thoughts.
I don't need to be entertained or distracted at all times.
The dog isn't disrespected, we're just ambling along in our own way.

SerenityNowInsanityLater · 27/08/2024 21:32

I do! I love a good podcast or listening to music. I love my dog to bits but… he’s the worst conversationalist. All he does is sniff his way through walks like he’s cosplaying as a cadaver dog. I just leave him to it. I don’t totally ignore him. But he totally ignores me. 😆

LozzaChops101 · 27/08/2024 21:34

Depends which walk I’m taking us on! Sometimes yes, mainly podcasts or audiobooks so I can hear the guy dragging his axe behind him as he approaches. Dog doesn’t give a shiny shite whether I think he’s a good boy or not and he reads hand signals spookily well so we stay in touch that way.

chattyness · 27/08/2024 21:35

No I like to chat to my dog and also I like to be aware of my surroundings .I don't like to be surprised in the woods by peop le with offload dogs. We've been attacked me a few times this year by tourists and locals with their dogs offlead and it's not fun

SlipperyLizard · 27/08/2024 21:38

I use one earbud as I walk along canals so want to hear approaching cyclists (or axe murderers). Two ear buds feels like I’m too isolated from my surroundings to be in charge of a dog.

Usually Radio 4 in the morning, music or the Rest is Entertainment at other times.

Ahwig · 27/08/2024 21:39

I listen to music and quite often sing along luckily the dog has the same musical taste as me .

mewkins · 27/08/2024 21:41

I sometimes do. My dog doesn't mind, she (daschund) has better things to do than talk to me. I either listen to music or an audio book/podcast.
