I'm really fragile at the moment and having a wallow, I've just watched the first season and cried (told you I'm fragile)

I just need know that it continues with the good outweighing the bad.

Are the lodgers bad?

(I know this sounds pathetic but having a really rough time )

It's been so long since I watched it but it will have a happy ending!
Lodgers are bad but they'll get found out eventually.

Balloonhearts · 26/08/2024 12:13

It all has a happy ending.

CountryShepherd · 26/08/2024 12:14

I spent the entire run worrying - but you'll be safe! Carry on and enjoy!

It's quite a saccharine series, nothing bad happens that isn't resolved usually within the same episode.

I wasn't a fan of this version. Megan Follows will always be Anne for me!

Deafdonkey · 26/08/2024 12:33

Thank you all for taking the time to reply.

Saccharine is exactly what I need.

I'm not sure why I've never read the book.

I shall carry on hiding from the world watching it, I just need to escape sometimes.

Is this series anything like the book?

CountryShepherd · 26/08/2024 12:35

My DD (16) and I watched it together as she was coming out of a period of anorexia, it was just the job, we got very engaged in it!

Helloworld56 · 26/08/2024 12:41

I really didn't like the series. L M. Montgomery would have been appalled. Aunt Josephine a lesbian (really?) and Anne herself is extremely annoying - crying and running off at every difficulty.
Things resolve happily in the end though, even if the series is far removed from the original book.

I hope she continues to recover.

The second series is disappointing.

I thought they dragged out the lodger story a bit and that it was implausible. I loved that they made Aunt Josephine into a salon-running lesbian! Some of it was a bit twee. I read a critique suggesting that Anne has autism which was an interesting take. But I don't believe she would have fiddled with Matthew's former romance; it just wouldn't have been done. Gilbert the saint gets overdone quickly. It has by necessity added a lot of artistic license to the texts to make them into a series, if you can overlook that, it's quite a cosy watch.

rainbowbee · 26/08/2024 14:16

And yes, same opinion as a op- Anne does get a bit too old to keep running away crying and tantruming and that gets tedious to watch.

6ixThirty · 26/08/2024 14:48

I really do love the original books.
A year or so ago I thought that I would give this series a try, and made it halfway through the first episode. It just felt all wrong, and the final straw was the bit where Anne has a mouse dropped in her mouth at school?
This thread has confirmed my suspicion that it's best not to go there again!

OpizpuHeuvHiyo · 26/08/2024 14:58

I began to find it far too irritating the way that every non-evil character just happens to have enlightened liberal 21st century attitudes to every issue that was seen very differently at the time in reality. Having one character being liberal inclusive and accepting would be fine. Having dozens is just irritatingly unrealistic.

EineReiseDurchDieZeit · 26/08/2024 15:04

I LOVE the book and gave this a wide berth, too many changes

Yozzer87 · 26/08/2024 15:07

I'd forgotten how much I enjoyed this series, I might rewatch it at some point.

ZittiEBuoni · 26/08/2024 15:11

I know it wasn't for everyone, but I was surprised I liked it as much as I did, given its divergence from the book. Although lots of 'issues' were shoehorned in, I found it mostly quite elegantly and tastefully done. The performances were so good that it didn't really bother me (Matthew and Marilla are just brilliant). I absolutely loved Anne but she reminded me very strongly of one of my dc so that might have had some bearing Grin.
There is some sad stuff in series 3, specifically a character death and a horrible but realistic storyline about a young indigenous girl being forced into a cruel religious boarding school. I hate that the series was discontinued before this storyline was resolved - on the whole I really enjoyed it and was very disappointed there was no fourth series.

ZittiEBuoni · 26/08/2024 15:12

And definitely read the book! I've read and reread it sooo many times, it's the best comfort read ever.

BabaYetu · 26/08/2024 15:14

The differences from the books were too much. The Megan Followes series was lovely

Yes! I used to love watching that series.
She was perfect as Anne (well, in my own head having read the books 😁) and I loved the casting in general, especially Marilla and Matthew.

WallaceinAnderland · 26/08/2024 15:21

I have had the theme song in my head forever.

If I have a job to do but intend to do something else first, in my head it goes like this 'I must get that washing on, but first I... must climb a tree' 😕

Deafdonkey · 26/08/2024 15:28

Agree about Marilla and Matthew, they really carry the series.

I might finish at the end of season 2 then. Thank you

I will read the books when I'm feeling less fragile.

What happened to Michael?

OP posts:
Balloonhearts · 26/08/2024 15:35

It's Gilbert's father who dies.

Prenelope · 26/08/2024 15:36

I absolutely hated the sexual abuse shoehorn and Anne's very odd reaction to it. Didn't watch any if it after that
