I'm really fragile at the moment and having a wallow, I've just watched the first season and cried (told you I'm fragile)

I just need know that it continues with the good outweighing the bad.

Are the lodgers bad?

(I know this sounds pathetic but having a really rough time )

It's Gilbert's father who dies.

Phew, I've got passed that. Thanks.

I absolutely hated the sexual abuse shoehorn and Anne's very odd reaction to it. Didn't watch any if it after that

Thank you for the warning about this.

Thank you all for taking the time to reply.

Saccharine is exactly what I need.

I'm not sure why I've never read the book.

I shall carry on hiding from the world watching it, I just need to escape sometimes.

Please do read the book, it’s so good as is the Megan Follows series and Anne With An E (I only got as far as the first episode) bears no relation to it whatsoever. Lodgers??! They are not in the book.

OP, for escapism I'm not above a bit of Barbara Taylor Bradford (Woman of Substance etc) - I think it was on TV mid 80's, about the same time period as Anne of Green Gables😁
Subject matter was a bit racier though!
Also love Catherine Cookson (literally anything by her - all available as miniseries for free on one of the streaming channels I think) and am completely convinced that sometimes Tolstoy and Shakespeare (and reality) have to wait...🤗

Deafdonkey · 26/08/2024 17:48

I don't think I like Anne

OP posts:
Deafdonkey · 26/08/2024 18:28

It is very 'modern'

If you can find it OP, the 80's Anne of Green Gables was such a lovely watch. Proper escapism!

gingercat02 · 26/08/2024 18:52

I read all the Anne books as a child and loved them, but Jesus she's an annoying little fucker, in the first series, when you're an adult.
I have just started S3, it's good but I don't really remember the books.

I think that is more what I need.

The teacher is predatory.

I (obviously) love Anne but I didn't take to this version. The Megan Follows one is wonderful. She is Anne!

The original version makes the new one look like a Ken Loach documentary!
I think you'll love it OP!

Kim Braden was the original original. It was a BBC Sunday teatime serial - they used to do classics for family viewing in that slot. Kim Braden was much too old, but she did look the part, and her parents were Canadian.

I found Anne in the books became a bit too good to be true and universally beloved as the series went on. I do love Rilla of Ingleside - but be warned it is sad in places, as it's set during the First World War.

I will read the books when I'm feeling less fragile.

What happened to Michael?

Michael doesn't exist in the books. In the series he's a brother who died early, after which Marilla became a carer for their severely depressed mother and a parent to Matthew whilst still a child herself. It's an explainer for why neither of them married, which would have been unusual at the time.

Is this series anything like the book?

No, it’s like really, really bad fanfic.

charabang · 26/08/2024 23:08

I really enjoyed Anne with an E. Yes, it's a very different take but it is possible to enjoy it for what it is if you don't compare to previous versions or the books. Anne is very annoying but she does mellow and mature. I was very disappointed that the show was dropped. The series has a very happy ending so stick with it.

Obviously I've not read the book, but I think I'd agree with this. As the series has progressed it has become so modern in topic that I'm almost expecting Anne to whip out a smartphone.

Which is disappointing, I really enjoyed the first few episodes and have seen some clips on YouTube of the 80s version, and I'm going to look for the full series.

I've also ordered the book.

Why did no one tell me about Mary

ShillyShallySherbet · 31/08/2024 21:50

Sorry I have no idea who Mary is, sounds like this series has no resemblance at all to the book.

I did! 'Character death in series 3'. I was so sad about this.

Mary isn't in the books, nor is her husband, baby, or troubled adult son. In the series they become Gilbert's tenants (so he can add white saviour to his exceptionally long list of marvels for a teenager).

Oh I miss read, I thought it was Gilbert's father. I bawled. Wasn't expecting it and didn't see why it was needed.

@rainbowbee that made me laugh, very true.

I'm going to finish it before I read the book.
