Anyone else feeling sad the school holidays are coming to an end?

I knew I would feel like this, I always do. One more week left and I'm feeling sad about it.
Dc are now counting down the days til they're back at school ( not in an excited way ).

Most people I have told this to in real life think I'm crazy and they can't wait til their dc are back at school.

I must follow after my mum as she always liked having us home.

Who else is feeling a bit sad about the holidays ending?

Yes, but that is partly because I also have to go back to work! I’m a teacher. 😁
But I love the days with my girls even when they’re being a bunch of lazy, bickering teens.
I get melancholy at the end of the holidays.

coffeeandteav · 23/08/2024 23:16

Definitely me. It is nice ti be stress free.

My dd has ESBA.

Bluemincat · 23/08/2024 23:16

Me. I'm counting down the days too. The thought of packed lunches and homework and extra mental load is delressing.

I also hate the winter as I really feel the cold and have Raynauds so it just feels like an endless battle against the cold. Plus dark evenings which make me lose all .motivation to do anything except eat chocolate and watch TV. So September feels like being at the top of the slide into doom and gloom!

Yes as a teacher I do sometimes wish I had a work from home job. I love my time with my kids in the holiday.

Moier · 23/08/2024 23:20

I absolutely loved school holidays and spending time with my daughters.

Kneeslikethese · 23/08/2024 23:22

Yes. I'm a ta and dreading going back. I love being off with my kids even now they're older teens. It's literally the only reason I'm in the job.

DrMadelineMaxwell · 23/08/2024 23:22

Me! Partly selfishly because I love the downtime and the return to teaching is FULL ON!

No young DC at home any more. One just back home for good from uni starting to apply for work, and one who is working but still living at home. So I'm enjoying spending time with the younger one when she's not doing her own thing.

I always feel a bit sad that it's another year down and done too. And nostalgic for the summers when the kids were at home and doing young-kids things like going swimming and to the park etc.

Bank and diet will appreciate the return to routine.

motherofonegirl · 23/08/2024 23:24

I love the school holidays. Partly because I'm a teacher so don't want to go back to work, but mainly because I get to spend time with my daughter. I don't understand people who are stay at home parents who look forward to the return to school. Don't they like their children?! Surely having your children at home with you is why you are a stay at home parent in the first place? I can understand if you work full time that school holidays are difficult to navigate with child care, but If you aren't at work they are ace!

Another TA here dreading going back. My own DS is six, and I love being home with him. I don't want either of us going back.

Libre2 · 23/08/2024 23:25

Yes. I am not a teacher but DH is and the house runs so smoothly with him at home all the time. I get to go to work and not have to worry about anything else.

Cattenberg · 23/08/2024 23:26

Yes, I hate the school run. Getting my six-year-old ready and walking her to her classroom door on time is like pushing treacle up a hill with a broom. I’m also not looking forward to getting up early on Sunday mornings when her dance classes resume.

TheMousePipes · 23/08/2024 23:28

Yes. Dd is heading into y10 and all the bollocks that entails. I love having her at home - she’s generally a very loving and gentle soul and I love her company.

troppibambini6 · 23/08/2024 23:28

I love the holidays too. I'm a sahm so not back to work but I love having the kids at home with me. I love the slower start in the morning and a break from all the after school sport. Everyone is in a bitter mood and I do t feel like we are dashing from one thing to another.

My eldest goes into year 10 also and I’m anxious for her and our stress levels! She is recently diagnosed epileptic so I worry.

LadyChilli · 23/08/2024 23:43

I get this. I love our everyday routine during term time but I adore having DS home and having time to do things with him in the holidays. I'm always sad about the feeling of another year over, him moving up the school. I'm in Scotland so we're back to everyday now and the melancholy has passed as it always does.

invisiblecat · 23/08/2024 23:52

Yes. Back to school has a knock-on effect to my commute, and it takes me 45 minutes to do a 30 minute journey.

Corksoles · 23/08/2024 23:56

Ah, yeah. It's so short. It's such a precious moment - they'll never have another summer at these ages again...

This.

It just means more daily battles for us.

frecklejuice · 24/08/2024 00:04

Yes. I love having the kids at home, they are 10 and 15 so I'm on borrowed time already and I love the summer holidays!

bergamotorange · 24/08/2024 00:08

Oh yes, every year the same feeling in the last week of the holidays. Soon be half term!

longdistanceclaraclara · 24/08/2024 00:20

I love the holidays and will miss them. Husband is a teacher so no issues around childcare,he not thrilled about going back though.

Tiredandannoyed2023 · 24/08/2024 00:26

Yes, I’m feeling the same. Dh and I have been at work over the holidays but it’s nice to have slower starts on our days off and quieter commutes. Dd had a tough time in year 8 and she’s been much happier at home. Ds is going into year 6 so I’m anxious about high school choices.

MolkosTeenageAngst · 24/08/2024 00:27

I’m a teacher and definitely feeling the same.

TheBlackSheepbaaaa · 24/08/2024 00:34

Yes, I have 12 year old twin daughters and I love having them at home. I always feel lost when they go back to school.

Same!
I'm a special needs TA and only changed jobs to be with my kids more!
I've loved every moment.

Absolutely dreading going back and will have my countdown timer on from day 1 for Ocrober half term
