Anyone else feeling sad the school holidays are coming to an end?

I knew I would feel like this, I always do. One more week left and I'm feeling sad about it.
Dc are now counting down the days til they're back at school ( not in an excited way ).

Most people I have told this to in real life think I'm crazy and they can't wait til their dc are back at school.

I must follow after my mum as she always liked having us home.

Who else is feeling a bit sad about the holidays ending?

I'm a teacher and a parent. We've had a great summer but you reach the point where everyone is ready for a change and I quite enjoy getting back into the old routine and the change of season.

Sierra259 · 24/08/2024 09:08

Me! I regret that I don't get to spend more time with them as I still have to work for most of it (though I am lucky to be part time, so get a couple of days a week). They're a really nice age to spend proper time with but the thing I miss most when they go back is just being more chilled with time. Term time is a mad rush of nagging them to get ready, packing lunches, school runs, after school activities and wrap around care on top of normal chores and it just feels like I'm on a treadmill

Flibflobflibflob · 24/08/2024 09:11

No, more looking forward to it tbh, love mine to bits, but very high energy. Not looking forward to the school gate though, nothing wrong with most of the parents but it totally triggers my social anxiety.

I enjoy the change in routine, no school runs or homework, loosening of the rules etc, and seeing the kids of course ha although I've barely seen them this summer theyve been so busy. But I love the 'reset' of September, it's like January but better because autumn is such a lovely month. Feels like a fresh start. I love that.

Solymoly · 24/08/2024 09:18

No looking forward to it, it means we can start going off in our touring caravan again without high prices and loads of kids everywhere

otravezempezamos · 24/08/2024 09:21

The only people I can imagine not breathing a sigh of relief would be teachers (or term time workers), or the unemployed.

Mintypig · 24/08/2024 09:22

No.
im not sad the hols are ending.
I have a week left and the kids go back to normality.

EveryDayisFriday · 24/08/2024 09:35

Nope, I'm in a mad panic making sure they both have everything to start their new school/ college. Making sure all start dates are correct, they have bus passes/ uniforms (ironed and labelled)/ lunch money systems / school apps and passwords etc.
I think I have everything now but currently living with the stress whilst really busy at work until they go back and everything is sorted and I can breathe again. DH manages the house thankfully but pretty useless at sorting new uniform and admin etc.
I really hate being disorganised but this summer holiday has flown by too quickly.

GingerPirate · 24/08/2024 09:37

No, soz.
Rather overjoyed!
Don't have kids, get depressed in the Spring
(to the point I have to choose medication for
a while).
The slowing down, kids back at school, Autumn and the (other) time change just make me feel so much better, since childhood.

Jennyathemall · 24/08/2024 09:03

Agreed.

Now you see I'm from a rural community, and the long school holidays are absolutely vital. My ds's friends are spending the holidays sometimes working dawn till dusk harvesting. The harvest was the main point of the long holidays, and are just as relevant to farm kids today as it was a generation ago. Farm kids would miss a huge chuck of schooling if we shortened the summer holidays.

MightyGoldBear · 24/08/2024 09:43

I enjoy parts of them the more relaxed routine. If we had a different setup, say more money, friends, family, a car. My dh was off the entire time. I'd probably love them.

As it is, it's relentless and hard going. I'm the default parent, so 6 weeks of childcare is pretty solid all on me with no substantial break or rest is exhausting. I work in the evenings when they are asleep. My dh obviously will take as many days off as he can, but those are then spent as family days. It's all just a bit full on. I imagine when children are a bit older, it's more fun. My youngest is a toddler, and that one alone is utterly exhausting.
Add in multiple illness too 😴

I imagine with support its very different. I just wish there was more options for families where 6 long weeks doesn't work. I really want to enjoy it but it pushes me past my physical limits and I burn out.

I do however love love love autumn. Its such a beautiful month 😍 my children love getting cosy in blankets fire on. Halloween 😍

Absolutely dreading it. I only have one in school, the rest home Ed. She wants to go to school but it makes her soooo grumpy, and the school run ruins our lives, no exaggeration! Very much hoping she decides to home Ed at some point. I love the time with them and the more relaxed pace of our lives.

I can’t wait!!!
We home educate, have been doing lessons all throughout the summer, one more week here and then the schools go back ! We are having that week off, got a few non-crowded days out planned! I’ve got their small first day of the new school year gifts and we’ll probably go bowling on the first day. The first week the schools go back is a big celebration here! Plus all their clubs stopped for the summer and they’re excited for them to start again.

No offence, I don't think the post is aimed at home educators. ✌️

CityofRojas · 24/08/2024 09:49

At what age did you start to enjoy the holidays? Mine are 2,4,6 and 7 and it’s really hard work and lots of bickering and constantly asking me for snacks. I’m in Scotland so we are back now, but I’d say the work / family juggle over the summer is exhausting.

It's probably not aimed at childless caravaners either, as I am but we are all free to post.

Yes. Great to have them home, lovely time together.

WeWillGetThereInTheEnd · 24/08/2024 10:03

I love the fact, there’s half the traffic at school opening and closing times! It makes going to appointments (in the middle of some far flung housing estate what with the privatisation of the NHS) so much more predictable.

Peakpeakpeak · 24/08/2024 10:06

Yes I always feel a bit sad. I don't work in education, but DH and I do take annual and unpaid parental leave so don't work much in this period.

Yuja · 24/08/2024 10:08

Yes, I am a bit. I've really enjoyed having my DC around even though I've had to work quite a bit. I've enjoyed not having the mad rush of lunchboxes, school uniform etc. Also had a break from their very time-intensive sport which has been nice too. But they're both ready to go back and see their friends etc.

Seriously79 · 24/08/2024 10:12

I think I'm missing a gene!

I can't wait to get back to some normality. I haven't known what day it's been for weeks now.

bert3400 · 24/08/2024 10:13

Mine have been off since 20th June (not UK)....we are all now ready for some routine. Had a wonderful summer but looking forward to them going back now
