Anyone else feeling sad the school holidays are coming to an end?

I knew I would feel like this, I always do. One more week left and I'm feeling sad about it.
Dc are now counting down the days til they're back at school ( not in an excited way ).

Most people I have told this to in real life think I'm crazy and they can't wait til their dc are back at school.

I must follow after my mum as she always liked having us home.

Who else is feeling a bit sad about the holidays ending?

Yes, but not because I have school age children or work in a school but because my walk across town to work is so much nicer without all the traffic.

Vinorosso74 · 24/08/2024 10:22

Yes, it's knowing that it's the end of summer (here's hoping for some sunny September days though). I also like the more relaxed mornings and less routine.
I also can't believe DD is going into Y10, no idea where the years are going.

Willoo · 24/08/2024 10:27

I can’t wait until the schools go back. Everywhere is so busy. Can’t wait for the quiet so I can start visiting places again.

I'm a bit mixed! On one hand I've enjoyed my (older teens) dds being around more. I've also loved only working part time hours through the summer (my piano teaching is termtime only, other work carries on) so for those reasons I'm sad it's nearly over. Also struggle with winter light levels so that's looming too.

BUT at the same time I'm sick of being skint - all school holidays are a nightmare as my income plummets from just about OK to very much not enough. I still need to work as much as possible, so end up doing v little with the girls and can't do holidays etc. I miss seeing all my pupils, but I'm also worried about going back to flat out full time ++ hours.

Beamur · 24/08/2024 10:34

I've always loved the school holidays. DD is excited to go back to College which is brilliant but she enjoys the holidays too.
I don't miss the school routine/term time activities and it's nice to have a break and just relax a bit. I work through the summer so it's not like I'm not doing stuff but we enjoy family time and being at home.

TheGoddessMinerva · 24/08/2024 10:37

I love having my children around, and I love the chilled feeling in the house. I don’t mind the school routine, but I much prefer the holidays.

FriendsDrinkBook · 24/08/2024 10:42

I'm sorry for all of you that find it a genuine break , but from the perspective of this autism mum the holidays are incredibly difficult and I'm hanging on by a thread right now! The lack of routine is terrible for my son's behaviour and creating a holiday routine he'll accept happily is very hit and miss. His sleep is worst this time of year too. I've been up 2-6am most nights due to this.

Anything longer than 2 weeks is something we tolerate and plan for rather than enjoy.

No, soz.
Rather overjoyed!
Don't have kids, get depressed in the Spring
(to the point I have to choose medication for
a while).
The slowing down, kids back at school, Autumn and the (other) time change just make me feel so much better, since childhood.

I’m the exact opposite. I feel low in autumn as the days get colder and darker. And I avoid the shops as much as possible between late September and mid December as I’ve grown to loathe the build-up to Christmas.

I love spring. My tulips and daffodils are in flower, the gorgeous tree blossom appears and baby animals are born. And there’s the promise of the summer to come.

NowImNotDoingIt · 24/08/2024 10:53

Yes. I love the holidays and spending the time with DD, but I have an easy set up and kid.

Comedycook · 24/08/2024 10:56

I have teens and keeping them entertained is ridiculously expensive. They are also starting to bickering and irritate each other so I'm looking forward to getting back to a routine.

AuntieMarys · 24/08/2024 11:06

I'm looking forward to visiting places without hordes of children!

Wow 😳

I'm looking forward to cleaning my kitchen. I swear someone comes into it appropriately every 30 seconds to request food!

I love the school holidays. Partly because I'm a teacher so don't want to go back to work, but mainly because I get to spend time with my daughter. I don't understand people who are stay at home parents who look forward to the return to school. Don't they like their children?! Surely having your children at home with you is why you are a stay at home parent in the first place? I can understand if you work full time that school holidays are difficult to navigate with child care, but If you aren't at work they are ace!

I would of thought as a teacher you would understand that sometimes we need a break from the constant demands of children. Having 1 at home is completely different to having multiple children at home and as much as I love my children to the ends of the earth I also appreciate the opportunity to wee or shower on my own or clear up with house without it being undone in minutes

I'm a sahm. I'm looking forward to schools going back but not because I dislike my kids! My dc are older now but in the past I struggled with school hols because..

I'm an introvert and struggle with absolutely no alone time.

I have lots of things I need to do that I can't get done with kids around. Housework, appointments etc

Holidays are expensive.

Yep- this is where we are at the moment ( and also your comment re the kitchen 🤣). I feel like I constantly dish out twenties for cinema/ flume park etc. Honestly I think the dc are also looking forward to getting back and also all their sport starting up again.

itsgettingweird · 24/08/2024 15:47

Yes and no!

Yea because I have to go back to work.

No because I do actually love my job!

I think I will be struggling more of the weather starts to be nice when we have to go back 😂😂

Rollonsummer1 · 24/08/2024 17:14

@motherofonegirl because school gives them a break because they are there allllll the time?
When I was a stay at home I booked dc into some holiday clubs... Just a few days here and there to get a break because it was even more intense in the holidays.

Now it's wonderful being able to be off with them. I'm not looking forward to it at all however I'm excited for them to move on in school and so on.

CordeliaNaismithVorkosigan · 24/08/2024 17:28

I work FT (in fact writing this post from a hotel room after travelling for work for a few days), and will be sad about the end of the holidays. But DD is older (going into Y10) and DH works very part time to manage the household stuff and be there for her, so summer is a nice relaxed time for us. I don’t have to get anyone except myself up and out of the door in the morning, and when I’m off we can do fun things together. It was tougher when she was very young, and would be tougher still if DH and I were both trying to do full-on jobs.

EllaPaella · 24/08/2024 17:29

I always feel sad about the end of the summer holidays. I love my kids having a good long break from routine, even if I still have to work. I love late evenings with them and lazy mornings lounging around. I usually have two and a half weeks off with them and we have lots of friends and family to stay. It's 6 weeks of a complete change to daily life and I love it.

rentersleaf · 24/08/2024 20:11

Beezknees · 24/08/2024 00:40

No.

Do people not have jobs? The summer holidays are no different to any other time expect DS is under my feet more 🤣

Only sahp and teachers responding positively 😂

Comedycook · 24/08/2024 20:17

My teenage dc is permanently bored.. apparently. Today I have given them about 10 potential day trips and activities which have all been rejected. Every day they say "what can we do today". and then go on to reject every suggestion I have without having any ideas themselves. They definitely need to get back to school!

Nonsense, I am neither!

mothsandgoths · 24/08/2024 21:23

I will miss the relaxed mornings

But my kids are missing the routine

CaptainCabinetsTrappedInCabinets · 24/08/2024 21:26

Hahahahaha NO I CANNOT WAIT for some peace.

I WFH and having everyone home all day every day is so incredibly distracting.

The days I've been able to be off with them have been nice but it's so, so much more stressful in the holidays.
