So glad to hear you’re OK @Penguinsa . Sorry about the abysmal food, though.

We've had torrential rain over the past couple of days. After a long dry spell it’s broken with a vengeance and locally there have been some major floods, but luckily we haven’t been affected in our little area (other than being totally sodden). In answer to your thought, Dandy - no, I’m afraid they generally aren’t taking flood-plains or surface water into account when giving permission for new builds. We live downhill and they plan to build thousands of houses uphill near us; everyone's very anxious about the risk of flooding if they tarmac over existing farmland. As it is we get a torrent pouring down the nearest lane past our house when it rains heavily.

Deathraystare · 24/09/2024 08:50

Welcome back! @Penguinsa

I could have told you about the hospital food. Truly dire! This is why most of the patients order out. It is truly a royal pain for us receptionists because the drivers do not speak much English, you have to mime "have they paid?", Is there a code? do you want their birth date? (for vapes, but all the patients are 18 or over anyway!). The the staff member comes down and is asked for a code........ Mind you, the stuff ordered is not much netter than the canteen fodder burgers, pizza etc etc and they spend a lot of money sometimes more than one order a day.

Glad to hear you are alright now.

I was supposed to go to Stratford upon Avon yesterday but rain (flooding) stopped play. Just as well as I was unwell. Dry heaving, the runs and fluid in my lungs, swollen legs etc and puffing like Thomas the tank engine! However I did not get the message from the lady picking us up . My other friend had nagged and nagged and nagged me to bring my blue discount card so I was thinking of that rather than my phone. So I got to South Ruislip at 09.30 and waiting in the cold and rain until 11.00 for everyone. When I got back to Shepherds Bush I popped to a friend's place as I wanted to use her phone to explain what happened (assuming the other two had decided not to go and she assumed from my silence, I wasn't going either!) Only to find that due to some flooding in South Ruislip and at Stratford upon Avon she had contacted everyone to say it was off!! Actually it is just as well as I would have been a misery! But of course I did not know this until I got to my friends where I had to quickly use her toilet as I was vomitting again!

I went off to M&S and then before I went home went into next as they had a sale. I got a long black skirt for £9.50 ( down from £22.50) plus a long tunic/mini dress and a sleeveless white blouse (you can never have too many in the summer!). Was quite pleased at my mini haul but I did notice a lot of the material was awful - like shower curtain material- how can people wear it!!! There was a lovely cream top but it was made of nylon. Eeek!

@@Dandy

My Brother is a councillor and he told me that a number of local shops get flooded regularly and the problem is that a lot of them are owned by London or French land lords and it is hard to get in touch with them!

Umanresources · 24/09/2024 23:25

Welcome back @Penguinsa . You had a time of it, it sounds like. Hope you continue to improve.
We ha4d someone round today about having a walk in shower fitted instead of the bath with the shower over it. I'm finding it increasingly more painful every day. Hopefully it will be next month.
Early hospital appointment tomorrow morning for an endoscopy. I have then yearly, usually with just the throat numbing spray rather than a general anaesthetic, so I can be out quicker.

Mumtobabyhavoc · 24/09/2024 23:54

Uman, I'd be curious about the cost for that there. A friend did same, tub to shower only, and cost was around $10k CAD. *

*currency converter says £5549

Penguinsa · 25/09/2024 05:33

So glad your Mum's op went well Havoc and thanks everyone for good wishes re mine.

Do you have any plans for next year then MissC?

Very tired here, one hours sleep for 7 days in hospital and anaemic from operation but have got some iron vitamins I had before and had 2 now. No pain relief needed.

Mumtobabyhavoc · 25/09/2024 05:54

Don't forget to take vit c with the iron to increase absorption and fiber to prevent constipation from the iron tabs, Penguinsa. I need to get back on iron as well as vit d and calcium.

DC are asleep. I'm listening to a Freakanomics podcast.

bizzey · 25/09/2024 08:44

@Penguinsa how lovely to hear from you 💐💐.
I bet you can't believe it has all gone ahead and over with now .....bar the recovery of course... hopefully that will settle down soon.

Good reminder about the Vit C and Iron tablets Havoc ...i need to sort out some for myself.

I am terrible for remembering to take any supplements and things.

I hate having to swallow tablets 😁, but I am trying to remember to take some liquid Saponne (?sp ) as it tastes quite nice 🤣🤣..

bizzey · 25/09/2024 08:46

I had some effervescent vit c supplements some time ago...they were easy to get down me .
Easy to drink .

ShoesOnFirstThenCar · 25/09/2024 09:29

Glad it went ok Penguinsa , it sounds like it was a crappy hospital stay. Hope you recover quickly, though if no pain meds are needed sounds like you’re doing ok!
Umanresources hope your endo appt goes ok.
Death sorry you missed your trip but well done on bargain hunting!

Got a parents meeting in DD school this morning, need to psych up for it as her teacher will no doubt tell me how well she’s doing and I will have to politely disagree. Then I have to collect prescriptions and do a little bit of shopping, as DD is also full of cold and I have a suspicion she won’t make it to school tomorrow so need to do it all today. I will make lasagne for tea when I get back from all my “messages” (that’s what my dear old grandma used to call running errands)

Deathraystare · 25/09/2024 13:41

I am such an eejit!

Had planned to go to Portsmouth with a friend on a Saturday in September. This weekend just gone I knew there was nothing on but surprise, surprise as usually happens when I have a clear weekend, the 'office skiver' always becomes ill (she does not work Mondays)! So I work over the weekend. On Monday when I was supposed to go to Stratford upon Avon I happen to look in my diary and see I had booked out 21st for the Portsmouth trip (which my friend booked for us). I felt absolutely sick! Had she gone on her own??? Of course I have again lost my phone so could not ring her. I sent apologies by gmail but hadn't heard back. I had her number on me so I rang today saying I know I must apologise. She seemed to know what I was talking about until I mentioned Portsmouth, she then said it is this Saturday!! I am so relieved!! The cow laughed down the phone at me!!!

I really must sort myself out!!!!

MissConductUS · 25/09/2024 15:42

Havoc, we had a shower stall completely redone during covid - new enclosure, new tile, new plumbing and hardware, etc. It was about 11k USD. It's a large shower and we went high end on the hardware (Kohler), plus it was hard to get a contractor during covid.

Penguinsa, we don't have any big retirement plans. We want some work done on the house that would be easier if we were home. I want new kitchen cabinets, and we have some sliding glass doors I'd like to replace, as well as a few other bits. I'd like to take a beach holiday next summer. Maybe I'll get DH to show me London.

DS has a second remote job interview today with a hospital in Massachusetts that would let him work completely remotely. He likes that idea, but I think he'd be better off taking the government job he's been offered. He's only going to consider it if they offer him more money than the government position.

Ohh MissConductUS ....yes !
Come to London and we can have a meet up 🤣!
We could meet under Big Ben with a carnation in our button hole 🌸🌸!

I am back from doctors with ds .
Poor thing has a chest infection 😞.

Got seen very quickly due to lots of lucky coincidences !

Put his repeat prescription request in yesterday and got message back that he was overdue a doctor review appointment and that a doctor would ring me today.

Said to doctor that I think he has chest infection.
(I won't explain the grossness on here that led me to that amazing diagnosis 🤮🤢🤧!! 🤣 )

She gave us an appointment this evening and ...yes Dr Bizzey was correct!

So he is now on the biggest antibiotic tablets ever seen ! 😯.

So hopefully they will kick in and not drag it out too much .
Only 2 weeks into the new term and he is ill .

I did remember to pick up some Vit C for us though ...so thank you Havoc !

Deathraystare · 25/09/2024 19:00

@bizzey

So he is now on the biggest antibiotic tablets ever seen !

Basically we call them horse tablets!!!!!!

bizzey · 25/09/2024 19:21

@Deathraystare has your phone situation still not had a conclusion yet ?! !

Lemonsandlemonade · 25/09/2024 19:38

Aww Penguinsa am so pleased your op went well. Sorry the food was so rubbish. Have to say locally the food in hospitals are fresh and homemade.

Missconduct Well done to your DS. I'm not sure I would work effectively completely remotely. Great for him to have choices. 😀

Here work is awfully busy and very hard going. Lots of micromanaging from the boss. I hate it.

HelenaJustina · 25/09/2024 21:55

It’s been a really crappy few days of weather here. Village access roads are flooded, the nearest town (3 miles away) was on the National news for the amount of rain. 25 minute commute this morning took 1hr 39. I could have cried with frustration!

Mumtobabyhavoc · 25/09/2024 22:14

Helena, awful drive! Was it just slow or unsafe?

Umanresources · 26/09/2024 15:48

@Mumtobabyhavoc the quote for the first shower was £6150, which isn’t too bad, but we have to get some more to compare.

I went for my endoscopy yesterday and I think the stress of the bathroom (which actually wasn’t that stressful), worry about being late for my appointment, needing the loo when I got there resulted in my blood pressure being really high! The systolic was 121 and she took it again using my other arm and it was a bit lower. The doctor wouldn’t do the procedure as it causes the blood pressure to raise as well, so the nurse said if we do it, there is the possibility of you having a stroke. That didn’t reassure me, but I had to take a letter to my own GP, so I’m awaiting the results of that. I’ve been reading up about high blood pressure and I seem to be doing well as far as my diet is concerned, but apparently most of my medication can increase it, plus the chronic pain from my arthritis. The nurse said try mindful and yoga breathing!

I think I’d better start praying to St Jude, the patron saint of hopeless cases and lost causes!

Penguinsa · 26/09/2024 16:09

Thanks for the tip Havoc I have lime juice in sparkling water a fair bit so am not too bad on vit C, the multi vit I am taking has iron and vit C in but not massive amounts.

It would be lovely if you came to the UK MissC.

Thanks everyone. No pain and good movement but very tired but I don't want to sleep, can some one plug me in please on recharge? 🐈‍⬛ is being a bit of a 🙊 and trying to get my DVT socks off all the time and leaping by me.

Mumtobabyhavoc · 26/09/2024 17:41

Penguinsa, I was advised to drink orange juice with my iron and include citrus in my diet.
I'm happy to know you are able to move around. 🤗

I've got a little fruit plate of pineapple, orange, grapes and strawberries; I cut up some banana bread; and I'm about to make a latte. Went to bed late, but luckily dc slept until 8:30 or so.

Mumtobabyhavoc · 26/09/2024 17:47

Uman, seems costs are similar here. I'm sorry about the procedure not going ahead.

Deathraystare · 26/09/2024 18:54

@bizzey
Nope! Still not!

MissConductUS · 26/09/2024 19:36

lemons, I struggle a bit working from home too. I can't do it very often. I do like getting some extra sleep in the morning. In his first job after uni, DS was remote 90% of the time and loved it. Perhaps it's a generational thing.

helena, how much rain did you get? Is your area prone to flooding? There's a category 4 hurricane hitting Florida today. I'm so glad those are rare in the northeast where I am.

uman, they rescheduled you for a systolic of 121? 120 is textbook normal. 121 is slightly elevated, which is not surprising because you were about to have an invasive procedure. I think they were probably overbooked and looking for a reason to move you to another day.

penguinsa, I'm glad you're not in pain. Floof has been appointed as your cat physical therapist and it trying to get you to move around a bit.

We're having some more desperately needed rain today. I'm attending a two-day meeting in Washington, D.C., in mid-December and need to book my train tickets, so I'm reviewing options.

OP posts:
Umanresources · 26/09/2024 23:29

@MissConductUS It was the diastolic that was 121. I can’t remember what the diastolic was, but they kept me under observation for quite a while. I was actually the first on the list, but they will re-schedule in the next couple of weeks. The weather here has been atrocious, please do have some of our rain!

I got my letter today for my flu shot and my Covid jab as well. I’m feeling like a pincushion at the moment. It’s a good job I don’t have a needle phobia.

Aw Shoeson ‘messages’ is a lovely word.

Havoc I had to double check my supermarket order, because the last order came with 6 packs of 5 bananas, as well as the 6 single bananas. Luckily they took them back and I had the 6 single bananas.

Mumtobabyhavoc · 27/09/2024 01:41

Uman, you could make a lot a banana bread!
