@HelenaJustina
OOh that is interesting!

There used to be a Polish deli/cafe (I think where the hairdressers Adam & Potsie is now). My friend and I were there near Christmas when lots of Poles were ordering for Christmas! We also watched Dynasty (in Polish!!) there once.

A few days ago I went to the Polish centre and had the Pierogi I mentioned (sauerkraut and mushroom), plus mashed potato cos I am a pig! Should have had the salad too as it looked like sliced beetroot. I had a gorgeous apple cake too with meringue on top. Yum!

Umanresources · 21/09/2024 22:27

I am not easily influenced (ok not much) but reading about the pierogies @Deathraystare they are already in my online supermarket basket.

Every day I now do the games on NY Times thanks to @Mumtobabyhavoc . I have to do them as soon as midnight comes. I’ve also downloaded the waffle app on my phone and IPad, so I can access them from the first one.

I’m still watching Strictly as I recorded it. It’s a very long show tonight and I have been following the Mumsnet Strictly chat as well.

DD’s birthday today. We got her the new Lego set, Harry Potter, The Burrows. She loves the sets, which she started building during lockdown, although she was working as a mental health nurse the whole time. She is my pride and joy. Her dad left when my son was 3 and I was 3 months pregnant with her. We were a family of 3 for 17 years, with the help of my lovely late mum, some good friends and we had a lovely life, we were poor but we were happy 😆 . We still get on so well together, which is a good job as she lives with me and my fab partner, she has been my boomerang child, returning home after living in several different places.

Mumtobabyhavoc · 21/09/2024 23:11

Uman, I'm still doing the nyt puzzles, too! We'll have to encourage Penguinsa to start again. 😄
You sound like a lovely mum. 🩷

Been sleeping/dozing most of the day, DC's cold finally got me. Had an awful feeling I can't really explain, but it's like the heebee geebees (sp?) and I tend to feel it when getting ill. Luckily my mum is helping with dc, so just getting out of bed to change diapers and nurse baby, although baby slept on me for a stint earlier.

I've put frozen chicken thigh into a roaster with seasoning and water to bake. Liquid will reduce and I'll use it to make gravy. I brown flour and add butter to make a roux then slowly whisk in stock.

How does everyone else do it?

I think I'll make a variation of Christmas Eve's pudding for "afters" with peaches and strawberries.

bizzey · 21/09/2024 23:19

My Strictly little nibble ! ( Well 2 of them ...I had the other 2 earlier 🤣🤣😯!)

bizzey · 21/09/2024 23:20

How is your mum now Havoc ?

Mumtobabyhavoc · 21/09/2024 23:25

Bizzey, she's recovering well, thanks! I just mentioned to her she's to chat with surgeon a week post, so I should call his office to arrange.

Mumtobabyhavoc · 22/09/2024 04:11

Looks a bit of a mess, but sooo good! Hadn't planned on dessert tonight or I would've gone all out with either ice cream or whipped cream.
(Strawberries & dark choc chips under the cake.)

Deathraystare · 22/09/2024 07:26

@Umanresources
Here I am waiting with my hand out for the commission on the pierogies! Somehow I think I will be waiting a long time!

There is a lot of food on these posts! I got home yesterday and all I fancied was marmite on toast. Still lovely though!

Off to Stratford upon Avon tomorrow. My friend wants to 'try out' her new car! Deffo going to Ann Hathaway's house but my friend said there is lots to see there. I won't mind even if it is rainy!

No watching tv for me last night even though there were two Pedro Almovadar films on. Just felt exhausted.

Glad your mum is on the mend @bizzey and hope you feel better soon @Mumtobabyhavoc

DandyDandylion · 22/09/2024 08:50

I assume from all the food chat your dc are now getting better Havoc?

Dd likes strictly so we watch it, but didn’t have the stamina to watch it all last night. The menfolk shut themselves in another room and watched the boxing.

I just do wordle as I think you have to pay for a subscription to do more than one? Having completed today’s I have now played 849. Does anyone know a good anagram app, I need to brush up on my conundrums?

ShoesOnFirstThenCar · 22/09/2024 10:42

I’m another NYT games addict, I have an order in which they are completed tho…some are morning / breakfast ones, others are evening ones.
Dandy I don’t have an account, but that means you only play one game a day of each one. Which is good otherwise I’d be on it all day!

I watched Strictly on the iplayer as DH was watching some awful film. Also means if I start watching it late I can fast forward through the training sections, don’t enjoy them very much. Just show me the dancing!

Glad your mum is ok Havoc and the kids are doing better. Hope you feel better soon too.

ShoesOnFirstThenCar · 22/09/2024 10:46

Bizzey I love chocolate eclairs! They’re my absolute favourite but I only like the M&S ones, luckily we have a Food Hall near!

MissConductUS · 22/09/2024 11:49

uman, we have two inflatable aerobeds we bought over 20 years ago when we had to move into the house the day before the furniture would be moved from our old house. They still come in handy from time to time.

havoc, I've had a cold for the last few days too, but am feeling a bit better today. I'm glad your mum is recovering well. And your mum, too bizzey. My mum passed last December and I miss her, then we lost my MIL in May. It's been a bad year for mums here.

It's been lovely here this weekend. Happy first day of fall to everyone.

MissC many years ago, my then ex and I went to stay at a friend's house. We slept on an inflatable bed which was slightly wider than the room, so it was on a slope. We were very squashed all night. In the morning he got up and my friend came in to talk to me. I was pouring out my heart to my friend and was very distressed when suddenly there was the loudest and longest raspberry noise from the mattress as it slowly started to deflate. It certainly cheered us both up as we slowly sank very gracefully to the ground! 😂

Mumtobabyhavoc · 22/09/2024 14:19

Miss, had to enlarge pic to see Daisey! 😂

And happy first day of Fall!!!!

mathanxiety · 23/09/2024 04:31

I love the NYT games too. DD mentioned to me that my recently renewed library card gets me access to online subscriptions, including the NYT, so I need to look into that and see if games are included.

The drought has finally ended, quite emphatically. It has rained on and off all day. I hope it means the grass will green up again - it had all turned brown. The stifling heat is gone too. My car was rinsed off very nicely by the rain. It was beginning to look a bit disgraceful thanks to driving through the never-ending dusty roadwork every day.

While going through a storage box in one of the closets, I came across some artwork the DCs did when they were little, all very charming, or at least I think so. I'm going to buy some frames and hang it all.

penguinsa hope you're OK.

havoc feel better soon. Hope the LOs and your mum are recovering.

Mumtobabyhavoc · 23/09/2024 04:52

Oh, Math what a lovely thing to do (framing kids' art work)! 🩷

We're all feeling much better, thanks (everyone). ☺️

Doctor appt tomorrow re recent x-rays. Have been meaning to get labs done, too, for well over a month...🤫🫣 planning for tomorrow before I see doctor. Got sidetracked by back prob all Aug til recently and past week was a write-off as you all know...🤷‍♀️

We're all bathed and hair washed here, it's quiet and lights are off... trying to get kids down for the night. No resistance so far....🤞

Of note re games: mn has a version of wordke for free on home page, I think. Came across it last night.

Mumtobabyhavoc · 23/09/2024 04:54

Oh d-uh. 🤦‍♀️ Just scroll up to "puzzles" top of page in YELLOW.... 🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️

Penguinsa · 23/09/2024 23:54

Thanks loveliest thread people for all the good wishes. Operation went ahead on 17th, at first they had an issue of no theatre as theirs had very little heating then they tried to take another theatre but another surgeon said that's my theatre get your own then after a couple of hours searching and moving one was found so was third time lucky. Lovely nurse looked after me waiting. Op started around 10am and finished at 7.30pm then in recovery room partly due to low blood pressure until midnight. Then 7 days in hospital and back home today. Very good results, pretty perfect, though nurses were under so much pressure and I reacted badly to morphine but three times they insisted on giving it until one agreed with me and got stopped. I have almost no pain since late day 2 or so and taking nothing now. Full range of movement back. Look like I used to again and nerves have reconnected so feeling in it. Nhs food was so dire, think they obviously have a 20p per patient budget. Cream of chicken with no cream and 1 tiny piece of chicken, another main meal of just cheese, dessert was jelly or tinned fruit. Daily menu and I used to ask what was least worst option. Havoc certainly wasn't the chef there. Corned beef sandwich with stale bread and vegan spread so thinly spread you couldn't see it. And drinks of luke warm water, nice. Though sometimes you could get fruit juice and that was good, cranberry, pineapple, apple, orange of reasonable quality. Only way to get vitamin C. The lady serving menus said everything is frozen and unfrozen so avoid roast potatoes. Dito their jacket with tuna mayo.

Will try to catch up later.

Penguinsa · 23/09/2024 23:56

The cheese meal was just grated cheddar.

MissConductUS · 24/09/2024 00:14

It’s lovely to see you back on the thread, pengiunsa, and good to hear that your surgery went well. It is a bit concerning that your hospital had an operating theatre with no heating and concentration camp food. The food in American hospitals is generally pretty good, likely because in many areas they compete for patients.

It’s raining here for the first time in weeks, thank goodness. Our lush lawn was looking a bit dire.

OP posts:
Mumtobabyhavoc · 24/09/2024 00:43

Penguinsa!!!! How nice to see you're back and that surgery went well. ☺️☺️☺️
I think they serve crap food so you don't get comfortable and want to stay. 🤔
I've just got a simple pasta tonight of Italian sausages cooked in pasta sauce in the oven I'm adding fresh chopped arugula to and serving over pasta, but you're welcome to join!
You're back!!!! 🤗🤗🤗

mathanxiety · 24/09/2024 00:55

Glad you have rain, MissC. We're getting more tonight, though I fear it's too late for the local lawns.

penguinsa - it's so good to know you finally got through it, and I hope you'll continue to recover smoothly. Sorry about the dire food. I bet you're happy to be home. A pile of grated cheese is ridiculous.
I always looked forward to hospital food here. It was usually plentiful and tasty, though I have to admit the tea was never great. Coffee was a safer option.

havoc everyone washed and freshened up sounds great. I always feel I'm on the mend after I've been able to have a good long shower.

I'm watching Wheel of Fortune (yes, yes...) and there's a contestant called Alexa on the show tonight. My Alexa keeps on telling me, "I can't help you with that," every time the contestant's name is called out. She's going to the bonus round so the teasing isn't quite over yet.

DandyDandylion · 24/09/2024 07:57

So glad to hear your surgery finally went ahead Penguin, wishing you a speedy recovery. I always take provisions when I go into hospital, can’t think of anything worse than being hungry after an operation.

We have a pet name for our Alexa Maths, so we can talk about her without her butting in. She really is like the fifth member of our household. I regularly remind my dc that I had to get up and pick a record/cassette/cd to play at their age and it was a limited choice.

We had rain here yesterday but not too much. We were on the edge of a heavy rain warning area and others in that area have water in their houses. Watching the news reports I can’t help thinking most of the flooded houses look like new builds. Are we taking surface water into account when we decide where to build?
