Just a reminder: GB News is not a news channel.

Just that really.

If it's not the hourly news update, what they broadcast is not news.

So when you tune in to Patrick Christie, Martin Daubney, even Christopher Hopper 🙈shows, they are not bringing you news, they're feeding you right wing propaganda with scant regard for facts and stuff.

I enjoy it, but it's not a news channel and I don't think it should be allowed to style itself as one.

Not news channels. And while it all might sound the same, it's not a 8pm broadcast being repeated at midnight.

I'm British and USAmerican, child of serial expats (one British, one US), have lived all over the world for many years. As a result of all of that, I'm pretty aware of the differences in media/press standards in various countries. In the UK, there is NO presumption of objectivity or lack of bias (as there is, for example, in the USA).

So how is GB News "not a news channel", in a UK context? Is it not OFcOM regulated?

I advise you to fact check everything they tell you before repeating it. Offering this advice in the context of warning people against GB news, rather than as an observation of UK news outlets in general, makes it seem like you kind of don't have any experience of the UK.

BBC think Roxy Tickle is a woman. You should fact check that

Exactly this!

BadPennyReturns · 25/08/2024 15:58

i've watched some good debates on GB News and they always have views from opposing sides to counterbalance, so not always right wing pushed at you. Hope it continues to broadcast in Starmer's Britain.

Seriously? That's a mad crazy jump. And wrong. I'm a middle aged British woman. Are you normally so quick to jump to crazy, wrong conclusions and then assume them to be real @OfficerChurlish?

Why are there no left wing radio stations in UK?

I only posited one conclusion. And I guess I have to rephrase it: someone who is angry that GB News is not objective, in a UK context, probably doesn't fully understand how media works in the UK, because none of it is objective and there is no assumption that it should be objective. That has nothing to do with whether or not the critic is British (although I would expect a British person to be more aware of it than everyone else, given that in other countries there is an assumption of objectivity for the media) or the age of the critic.

Agreed, some are more biased than others though...

I disagree! In the 1960s maybe, during all the 'reds under the beds' paranoia (which I'm too young to remember but have heard/read a lot about), but not now.

Harvestfestivalknickers · 25/08/2024 16:39

I watch it and love Stephen Dixon, Anne Diamond, Ellie Costello and Aidan the sports guy.

TooBigForMyBoots · 25/08/2024 16:54

I am not angry at GB News. Yet another ridiculous conclusion you jumped to @OfficerChurlish. I am one of the GBNews audience. I watch it daily. I was watching it when I started this thread.

I'm saying that it's not a news channel.🤷‍♀️

I'm not sure about radio as my experience is I tend to listen to music in the car. Would you class LBC as left wing? Maybe they are not popular as we are mostly a centre right country so not viable.

TooBigForMyBoots · 25/08/2024 15:34

I also expect the news to be current and up to date. Not repeats of bulletins that went out hours before.

So Sky and the BBC that repeat news stories over and over and over and over are not news channels?

News used to be a slot at the start/middle/end of the day. With 24 hour 'News' they absoluely have to repeat stuff as it isn't possible to be sending people out 24 hours a day to bring back new stories. Also, people watch when they are ready so in order to pick up the News, repeating the News means more people get to watch the News.

greengreyblue · 26/08/2024 08:07

Don’t worry, everyone knows what it’s about! Interesting that you enjoy it op while saying check every fact you hear .

gamerchick · 26/08/2024 08:09

You can't really trust any news channel. They do anything they want with facts.

DeliciousApples · 26/08/2024 08:37

All these channels that tell the news are the same.

It's the news as they see it, embellished with opinions in some cases, generally leaning in a certain political direction.

You need to watch a bunch of then to decide what the truth is.

And sometimes the ones we need to be watching aren't even broadcast in the country we are in....

OK, I stand corrected. So what, according to you, is the definition of "a news channel"? Or are you saying there are no news channels in the UK? I could possibly agree with that, and maybe I've misunderstood your whole thread and you just suddenly wanted to comment that GB news like everything else in the UK is not news?

(I'd probably do a better job of not jumping to "ridiculous conclusion[s]" if you'd do a decent job of making a point.)
