Artificial plants, are they ever acceptible?

Or just extremely tacky always, no matter what
?
Do you have them in your home? Which rooms?

That are naff. Why not get a real plant?

BarbedButterfly · 21/08/2024 12:25

Not for me ever. I have about 30 real plants. Other people can have what they want in their home and I wouldn't judge anyone. I can almost always tell though unless they are the really expensive ones.

ithinkilikethislittlelife · 21/08/2024 12:27

I try to have a mix of both. I love a green look in a room. I'm absolutely rubbish with real plants though so they die off pretty quickly with me.

Staunchlystarling · 21/08/2024 12:27

Absolutely, I’ve some very large very realistic and quite frankly very expensive fake ones, as well as some real ones dotted in. Curiously the decorator a couple of weeks ago broke a long leaf branch ofd a real one and thought it was fake. And the fake ones he thought real.

Minimum85percentCocoa · 21/08/2024 12:28

I have a windowless internal bathroom that I rehomed dd’s artificial plants into when she got bored of them. Provides greenery that I couldn’t have in there otherwise.

patchworkbear · 21/08/2024 12:28

Spot the artificial plants in one of my flower beds...

I had a house sitter water my artificial ones once!

Too far away and blurry,

3peassuit · 21/08/2024 12:29

I have real plants and fake flowers. Plants are easy to care for but flowers die after a few days.

Peonies12 · 21/08/2024 12:30

I just don't really see the point, they'll just get dusty, whereas actual house plants have many benefits for air quality. We have tens of house plants, we never do anything with them and they thrive!

NipLash · 21/08/2024 12:30

I have a couple of realistic looking ones. I can't be done with the gnats or whatever they are that come from the soil in real plants. Even with gravel covering it I get them.
There are some awful, plasticky looking artificial ones which I'd never buy, but many places are selling more and more realistic ones now. I'm all for anything that requires no looking after!

spiderdave · 21/08/2024 12:30

I have artificial plants in the house because I have loads of bloody plant allergies, but I have all real plants in the garden. I think they both have their place and both look nice.

the places where I want them would not be good for real ones to thrive I think

and I don’t have outside space so chaging pots etc seems like a huge faff

but it is probably laziness and excuses I know

I am the kiss of death to plants so I do have some fake ones!

cosyleafcafe · 21/08/2024 12:36

Why do you have to put a plant somewhere a plant wouldn't thrive?

Honestly, that is the epitome of a privileged first world life isn't it?

If you want plants then just get real plants and put them where they will thrive, and find something else for the dark cool places.

cosyleafcafe · 21/08/2024 12:37

Also there are some plants, e.g. zz plants, that do well in dark/ cooler spots. Just do some research about types of plants that will work for the space.

Goody2ShoesAndTheFilthyBeast · 21/08/2024 12:38

I don't because they aren't my thing but acceptable to who?

If someone likes them they should get them. What people who don't live in the house think is unimportant.

LoobyDoop2 · 21/08/2024 12:39

I think good ones are fine in places that don’t get enough light, or are so difficult to get to to water that you don’t get around to it. I have a few trailing down from high bookcases. Dunelm do some quite good ones, but you do need to pick and choose carefully. They can also work well intermingled with real ones to bulk them out a bit- if you put the fake ones at the back it’s hard to tell. Never flowers though, and never outdoors.

ReadWithScepticism · 21/08/2024 12:40

I would never have them, any more than I would have an artificial dog instead of a real one.* But that is because I adore looking after plants and seeing them change.
But they do look very realistic these days. If you just want them for decor and you like the look of them, then go for it. It's your house, and anyone who got judgey about them would be a bit of a nitwit.

Vintago · 21/08/2024 12:46

I have a very large garden. Shrubs flower and at certain times the garden looks wonderful. Buying realistic artificial stems from IKEA and sticking them in shrubs that have flowered, looks realistic and adds colour to a green leafy corner. A friend of mine admired my artificial peonies which supplemented a few real ones

Mumoftwo1316 · 21/08/2024 12:51

I'm not very green finger-ed but I don't like artificial plants.

I buy easy house plants like cactus, aspidistra etc.

In spots where plants wouldn't grow, I put nice stoneware instead eg an empty vase but a nice one. A nice bowl full of mini soaps. [Also, cluttered junk, but hey ho]

We had a very realistic fake orchid given to us and kept it for years and I just threw it out last week and I'm so glad it's gone

Mumoftwo1316 · 21/08/2024 12:52

Cut flowers are also a winner if you aren't good at keeping house plants alive.
