Artificial plants, are they ever acceptible?

Or just extremely tacky always, no matter what
?
Do you have them in your home? Which rooms?

I foster cats. Some houseplants are poisonous and even if I do research and buy cat-friendly ones, depending on who I've got in at any given time, they will probably get eaten, poo'd in or just knocked over and broken or the soil goes everywhere... 😹

BettyWhiteIsGreat · 21/08/2024 12:58

I can't get on board with adding more plastic to the world just to emulate nature so they're not for me (even though I do think they can look nice).

halava · 21/08/2024 12:59

Well I have real plants (just two) and I can manage them as they don't need much caring for. I've a few fake cut flowers and add real greenery from the garden.

Best of all though, is the.... wait for it - fake fruit bowl. I inherited it from my aunt and the fruit looks so real it is impossible to tell from a metre or so away. No more fruit flies, no more soggy bits going mouldy, I love it! The real fruit is in the fridge or freezer, berries and grapes. No one here likes anything else. So it's a result!

80smonster · 21/08/2024 13:05

No, so low brow.

Dontbugmemalone · 21/08/2024 13:09

I have 2 artificial small plants.
With real plants, I struggle to breathe properly due to allergies.
We also have a cat so need to be mindful of that.
Our garden has a mix of shrubs, which is good. I would like to plant some flowers outside but I am terrible at gardening, mostly allergy related.

If anyone has recommendations for sustainable artificial ones, that would be great.

Judellie · 21/08/2024 13:19

I have artificial flowers in vases in the porch. Real plants are outside, where they belong.
Houseplants just mean loads of insects in the house, no thanks!

LividSummers · 21/08/2024 13:27

I am terrible at keeping plants alive.

BUT i despise plastic plants. Honestly, you can always tell. And why on earth would you add something so dusty and plastic finicky to your house out of choice? Nasty. Not that i EVER admit that out loud.

I'll carry on wondering if the leaves curling up means too wet or too dry and usually getting it wrong, because plants should be real.

That are naff. Why not get a real plant?

Because we don't all have green fingers. Plants are work, create a mess, sometimes come with insects.

My granny had one and I remember how mesmerising it was :)

Are they ever acceptable is an odd question.

They aren't my personal taste, we have a few real plants and if I had somewhere where a plant wouldn't thrive I'd just put something else there instead.
But in your house, whatever decor you like is what's acceptable.

This I find strange. A fruit bowl is just a functional thing, if you don't like fruit that goes in it, just don't have a fruit bowl. I wouldn't have a fake fruit bowl anymore than I'd have a fake bread bin. I find my fruit bowl a necessary but annoying thing that just takes up space.

(I do realise that it's none of my business and anyone can have what they want in their house and that's fine.)

Gratchet · 21/08/2024 14:54

Fake plants are tacky. I have two I inherited, but I have about 50 living plants so it looks slightly less tacky.

Get lots of compliments on my real plants, especially the trees and hanging ones. The need to be watered 1-2 wills and pot change 1-2 times per year.

Way better, they change and grow every time. And they're worth investing in pretty pots for.

pinkspeakers · 21/08/2024 15:02

Yes I think they are generally a bit tacky. I do have some small fake succulents in my holiday let as the real ones did not end well and that looked worse. They look quite cheerful. I wouldn't have them in my own home though.

I seem to remember them being really popular at one time. I guess it's just an ornamental object.

Gratchet · 21/08/2024 15:04

But it doesn't really matter how nice they are to me - even if some really expensive one looked good, I really hate the idea of making a plant out of plastic.

A plant of all things, it's just terrible. There are shade tolerant plants, fright tolerant plants, hanging plants - we don't need to resort to plastic plants.

It takes all the joy from them.

BlackCatsAreBrilliant · 21/08/2024 15:08

They may be tacky, but they're what we have. Because a) I am rubbish at looking after plants, and b) the odd real plant I have been given gets eaten by a cat within a couple of days.

startstopengine · 21/08/2024 15:12

We have a mixture, our lovely house sitter watered them all! 🤣

Oh I like them, I have three real ones in the living room, but the hall has two large fake ones, due to lack of light, and you’d not know, I have them potted up with soil, which also helps. I’m considering a fake Yukka for the main bathroom.

Borninabarn32 · 21/08/2024 15:29

I don't see why not. Its decoration, just like ornaments or pictures. I've never looked so closely at someone else's plants to know if they're real or fake and I've never really cared.

SmallTownWay · 21/08/2024 15:51

We have a few in our main living room, office and some bedrooms as we like how plants look but our pets eat real ones so we can't have them.

Other people don't have to live here so I don't care what they think.

SmallTownWay · 21/08/2024 15:57

It's a shame you have to ask others opinion anyway OP. If you like them, have them, if you don't, then don't. You're an adult and can have what you like, even if it's seen as tacky by others.

Purplepeopleeaterz · 21/08/2024 16:18

If they’re in darker corners chances are nobody will notice they’re fake, I’ve got a mix of real plants indoors and a few fake & lots of real outside & I love them.

AtLeastThreeDrinks · 21/08/2024 16:31

I love them for adding a splash of greenery to a room, although I do agree about being loathe to add more plastic to our home. That said, I've only ever managed to keep alive about three houseplants, so artificial is preferable to me. It's just decoration in the same way we buy cushions, throws and knick-knacks to bring a room together. They're pleasing to the eye!

invisiblecat · 21/08/2024 16:35

I have real plants, apart from one artificial (and very realistic) succulent in the bathroom, which is in a place that a living plant wouldn't enjoy. I hose it down in the shower every few months if it is starting to look a little bit dusty, and that's it.
