Does anyone else hate the smell of lillies?

They're beautiful flowers, but the smell makes me feel sick, my sinuses close up and gives me a headache. I got some as a present last week and they've just flowered and dear god, the smell hit me as soon as I walked through the front door. I've put the vase in the garden so I can bin deal with them in the morning but I have the windows open and I can still smell them. Is it just me?

Cut out the polleny bit with scissors. Make sure you put a tissue under to catch it. It will make a huge difference.

Yes - can't bear them. If I get a bunch of flowers with them in, I pull them out and put them straight in the bin!

I had to throw some away a few weeks back - it was fine until they went from bud to full bloom, but then quickly became unbearable.
This was never a problem till I was pregnant, when I became a lot more sensitive, and post menopause it's got even worse, there a lot of smells I can't stand now.

I have a severe allergy to them

Yes it’s awful. Far too overwhelming.

Not me unless it's a full bouquet but DH reacts to just one of them. We got a beautiful bouquet from his colleagues when DD was born but it ended being pulled apart to get them out as soon as the driver dropped them off.

I love lilies. When I lived alone they were my flower of choice for the house. Now I live with DP who isn’t interested in flowers, and our cat who they could kill, so no lilies here. I bin them if anyone ever gifts them just in case as they are so toxic for cats.

I don't like the smell at all. I actually find lilies a bit creepy and I really dislike them. I also strongly associate them with funerals. I can't have them in the house.

I love them and dislike that I can only find bulbs for low or no pollen varieties. I weirdly really like the smell. Must be a marmite thing. I have heard that they were used in funeral homes to disguise the smell and that's why they're a traditional funeral flower. I find them intriguing and alien looking.

Apparently, we are on
one side of 50% of people scientifically.

50% of people will smell them as sweet flowers, the other 50% will smell cats pee- according to some study or other that a scientist friend told me.

lilies = angry sinuses, constant sneezing and a horrible headache.

once someone just on the same floor at work got some delivered, not even close to me, and I ended up having to go home because I couldn’t stop sneezing, big, huge, painful sneezes, and felt so awful.

If you cut out the yellow bits- before they fall and stain your furniture- they smell a lot better.

I hate the smell but it's because it's cloyingly sweet, not a cat pee smell at all. News to me that some people smell this!
