Does anyone else hate the smell of lillies?

They're beautiful flowers, but the smell makes me feel sick, my sinuses close up and gives me a headache. I got some as a present last week and they've just flowered and dear god, the smell hit me as soon as I walked through the front door. I've put the vase in the garden so I can bin deal with them in the morning but I have the windows open and I can still smell them. Is it just me?

@AinmEile I really wouldn't describe them as smelling sweet!

Yep! Cats pee for me!
Apparently, we are on
one side of 50% of people scientifically.

50% of people will smell them as sweet flowers, the other 50% will smell cats pee- according to some study or other that a scientist friend told me.

That's really interesting!

Hoglet70 · 21/08/2024 06:10

I love them and DH does nothing but moan about the smell. I don't notice.

Scooby2024 · 21/08/2024 06:12

I get it! I hate them. I can tell when I walk in someone house if they have Lillies out as I hate the smell, headache, eyes sting etc. I have a friend who loves them and she puts them in the garden when I go round 😂

Luddite26 · 21/08/2024 06:19

Severe allergy here too. Simply cannot go near them indoors. I like them in the garden but away from the windows. I used to be obsessed with cross-stitching them as my DDS name has Lily in it!

Deipara · 21/08/2024 06:23

Smell of cat piss.

BatshitCrazyWoman · 21/08/2024 06:28

I hate the smell, not cat pee to me, but an incredibly strong and overwhelming cloying sweet smell. I don't think they're beautiful, either! I just bin them if I get one in a bouquet.

TheKoalaWhoCould · 21/08/2024 06:31

I hate them too. To me they have an overwhelming, sickly sweet smell that makes me feel sick.

dobblevit · 21/08/2024 06:32

Hate them. My MIL keeps gifting them to me (in bunches of other flowers) and I just throw them all in the bin as soon as she's left. I don't have the heart to keep reminding her I don't like them

Insidenumber09 · 21/08/2024 06:35

Totally reminds me of funerals and sadness . Have them in the garden but not in the house.

littlebirdieblu · 21/08/2024 06:46

Cat pee here too!! No one else I know thinks this though, so I thought it was just me!! Yay to finding people who agree with me 🤣

Istilldontlikeolives · 21/08/2024 07:09

I don’t like lilies, they hurt my eyes, get into my throat and nose and just annoy me. The smell when they start to bloom is awful too. I do not understand why anyone likes them!

ThomasPatrickKeatingsDegas · 21/08/2024 07:13

I’m allergic to them, but even more than that in my culture they mean death so I’d never have them in the house.

Rowgtfc72 · 21/08/2024 04:18

Funeral flowers.

If you cut out the yellow bits- before they fall and stain your furniture- they smell a lot better.

I feel the same about purple and yellow chrysanthemums.

Guess I just wasn't going to the right sort of funerals.

MouseofCommons · 21/08/2024 07:19

Yes, disgusting smell.

2Old2Tango · 21/08/2024 07:20

Yes me too. If I receive flowers with lilies in I have to remove the lilies. I find even if you remove the pollen covered anthers, they still pong. It's also to protect my cat as they're toxic for felines.

Mairzydotes · 21/08/2024 07:22

I associate the smell with the dentist, as the dentist I visited as a child always had lillies in the reception.

I don't like them.

Berga · 21/08/2024 07:27

I was brought up that the smell of lillies is associated with death, and have never liked them or their smell because of that.

Vettrianofan · 21/08/2024 07:35

Oh yes I remember the smell...DBro got me lillies when I was pregnant as a gift. I was already struggling with smells anyway so that made it even worse!

DeanElderberry · 21/08/2024 07:54

I don't mind them outdoors when I can get a quick blast of the scent mixed with everything else, but indoors - ugh. A couple of weeks back there were some in church in an arrangement left over from someone's wedding - huge high-ceilinged space and I was at least 20 feet away from them, but grooooo.

JaninaDuszejko · 21/08/2024 09:18

I knew some people didn't like them because of the funeral thing but fascinating to know some people smell cats piss. I don't, I love the smell of lilies, but I can see how some would interpret the thiols in the scent as cats piss.

There's a few things that smell of cats piss, tomato plants and good quality French sauvignon blanc wine spring to mind. Same family of chemicals present. And asparagus makes your pee smell like cats piss as well but only some of us can smell it.

flymetoalphacentauri · 21/08/2024 09:41

I get sinusitis and they really affect me. I associate them with death as well.

FrillyKnickersAndNoFurCoat · 21/08/2024 13:05

I can't stand the smell of lilies and they give me a headache. Also the pollen is poisonous for cats so I remove them if they're any fresh flowers I'm given.

deeahgwitch · 21/08/2024 13:10

I like them.
I don't get the cat pee smell.
DH hates them, not because of the smell but the yellow pollen he invariably gets on his shirt.
You'd think he'd learn to keep away from them, as they are my flower of choice on the hall table.Smile

I'd not heard that before.
I know they are associated with funerals.
Would you mind saying what culture it is please
