Op can your GP help by sending you for an emergency appointment to EPAU?

Please don't be put off going to A&E, it's awful in this country that women are made to feel they have to suffer in pain and stress. I have no doubt an obstetric registrar would review you- I work in this area. Please don't be put off

Mrsttcno1 · 20/08/2024 11:37

I would honestly go to A&E OP if bleeding is heavy, the wait time is just an average as the reality is they triage as seen, you could only end up waiting half an hour. Good luck x

Sending lots of love OP. I had some bleeding around the same time and went to my GP in a panic. They told me in a very gentle way that very often bleeding didn’t mean that anything was wrong, and sometimes sadly it did mean that something was wrong but either way they couldn’t do anything about it. So to the people telling you to wait hours in A&E, it is just going to make your wait more uncomfortable. Stay home, do things to distract yourself and go to the private scan. I’ve got all my fingers crossed that everything is fine for you.

DaphneBasset · 20/08/2024 11:56

I had bright red bleeding at 18 weeks, just like a period. It was a subchorionic hematoma. No sign of it ~1.5 weeks later at my 20 week scan. I had no further bleeding and gave birth at 41 weeks.

I am sorry they aren't seeing you sooner. Mine happened on the weekend and in my area you don't use the maternity triage line until 24 weeks, so 111 sent me to A&E, I spent 11 hours not being able to eat anything before I was scanned in the gynecology ward. The nurses and doctors were all absolutely lovely and I even got my own room, but in hindsight I actually wouldn't have gone in. It would have been more comfortable to stay at home and wait for a scan slot, unless I was bleeding or in pain to the point of being concerned about my own health. That said, if I were in your shoes I would make sure I have an adult with me 24/7 until the cause is known because you are bleeding and don't know why; things can change quickly.

And you should go to A&E if you feel that's what's best for you - it's not your job to manage NHS capacity and I don't think anyone reasonable would argue that it would be wrong for you to go in. My only point is that it is worth considering whether a potentially long wait in hospital is the best thing for you. Only you know the answer - and if an A&E visit is the best thing for you then please don't let anyone put you off. You have to put yourself & baby first, no one else will.

They would not. Please stop spreading misinformation. Do you know how many women present at A&E frustrated and scared expecting things that cannot be delivered because of misinformation like this? It’s massively damaging to women.

Hope all goes well later, I would of thought as the bleeding has slowed right down all should be ok, as far gone as you are I would of thought if it were the worst the bleeding and pain would of ramped up. Good luck lovely x

AYouProblemNotAMeProblem · 20/08/2024 12:09

I'm sorry @Otherstories2002 but it is you who is spreading misinformation.
Pain and bleeding in second trimester is not normal and warrants investigation.
I apologise for your personal experience but I really don't think you are helping the OP by saying there is nothing they will do.
The point in being seen by obstetrics is to find out WHY she has pain and bleeding at this gestation and what management should be considered.

I have never said it is normal or not something to be concerned about. I have deliberately not said that. I have also not said it doesn’t warrant investigation.

What I have said is there is nothing they can do for bleeding as described here - there is not - and that it is not a medical emergency - it is not.

Next steps do need to happen and they will. Not in A&E because that is not the place to go.

I hope you’re doing ok OP and I have my fingers crossed for you. Fwiw I wouldn’t go to A&E either unless the bleeding was still very heavy, you have spoken with triage and they have made an appointment. From experience it’s the not knowing that is agonising and you’ve done all you can do which is make an appointment with EPU and booked a private scan at the earlier opportunity. Unfortunately if it’s a bad outcome waiting in A&E is not necessarily going to change that. I’ve been in your shoes at 14 weeks pregnant and I just wanted to know my baby was ok. Really hoping it all goes ok later.
