Does anyone on here make jewellery?

My daughter has a pretty necklace which has her name shaped out of what looks like wire on a silvery chain. Unfortunately the chain (maybe not silver!) has snapped so it can’t be worn.

I can’t imagine it was expensive but it’s pretty and quite unusual. What would I be searching for if I wanted to get a chain to attach each end of the name section to?? Something with obviously a clasp at the back. I was thinking of Etsy or EBay but it’s not just a plain necklace I want, it’s something that the name bit can be clipped to?

I had a phase of making, costume glass jewelery, you cann buy the clasps and various pieces. You need some plyer type device to join it to the chain. You can buy them for jewelery. Is that what you ment.Would it be better to show us a picture?

Thank you for your reply! I have tiny pliers already, I’m just not sure whether I can buy a necklace with two ends that will easily attach. Here’s a photo-I’ve scribbled out the name.

The chain doesn’t have to be like that-something silver, but I’m not quite sure how to do it?!

When I was doing this there were hobby jewelery companies online, actually even a few shops selling these sort of chains that you could buy.I thknk you didn't have to buy more than 1 chain.

Ooh, interesting! Can you remember any of the names or what I might search for? It’s not just a chain you put a pendant on, is it-I need something with end chains that easily open and close?

Oh, I can’t see a photo here. Can you think of what I might need to search for to fix the chain in my photo above?

Hobbycraft branches have sections with jewellery-making items. Maybe have a good look in there?

MamaBinturong · 16/08/2024 15:24

My baby has grabbed and broke the chain of a necklace a couple of times (I guess I should have learned my lesson!), I've used these kind of pliers to widen the link in the chain, and then closed it again with small pliers. Could that work?

I can help you.

Hang on a min and I’ll make you a list and some links of decently priced places to buy.

do you want actual silver, or happy with plate?

Wow thank you! I don’t mind-I suppose silver would be ideal but depends on cost really?

Thank you to everyone who has replied!

Okay two options but I can help. I’ve been making jewellery for many years.

the easiest route here would be to buy an entire new chain, rather with faffing buying chain, clasps etc. then cut the chain and insert the name using two jump rings.

This chain would be ideal: https://www.cooksongold.com/Finished-Chain/Sterling-Silver-1.7mm-Belcher-Chain-1845cm-Unhallmarked-100-Recycled-Silver-prcode-VVB-AHA&query=Belcher&channel=uk

however you would also need the right tools to buy the chain correctly (side cutter) and some flat nose pliers.

by the time you’ve done that it’ll be adding up. I have those tools and jump rings. If you wanted me to you could buy a necklace and send me your broken one and that one and I’ll do it and post it back (no charge). If you’re nervous about it and want to have a go yourself, i can walk you through. But you will need both pliers AND cutters in order
to cut the chain nearly. I can direct you to some
jump rings on the Cookson site too if that’s the direction you want to go.

Sterling Silver 1.7mm Belcher Chain 18

Sterling Silver 925 100 recycled Made in Italy Finished with a bolt ring clasp and jump ring Ideal for small pendants Highly polished.. - Product Code : VVB AHA , Price : 5.53 GBP

Mykittensmittens · 16/08/2024 15:40

Actually you MIGHT be able to get away with the jump rings which are already connecting the chain to the name, but it depends on whether the jump rings will fit through the loops on the new chain. And whether they are soldered shut or just closed.

Mykittensmittens · 16/08/2024 15:43

these are the jump rings - hardly worth worrying if you need them or not given they are cheap and you are already paying for postage
