Derry or Londonderry?

TigerOnTour · 12/08/2024 22:53

How controversial would it be if I used the wrong name and what is this city referred to in the North of Northern Ireland? The internet says that most unionists call it Londonderry and most nationalists call it Derry. Is this still accurate today? If you live there or nearby, what do you call it?

snowballsintheoven · 13/08/2024 00:00

Well.. I call it Londonderry, as does just about everyone I know.

However, I don't often ever have to speak of Londonderry/Derry and couldn't care less what anyone else calls it either.

Sparrowball · 13/08/2024 00:08

Derry.

Free Derry if you want to be inflammatory.

Citylady88 · 13/08/2024 00:17

Definitely Derry

BloodandGlitter · 13/08/2024 00:20

ZeroFuches · 13/08/2024 00:20

Crispynoodle · 13/08/2024 00:23

Derry I think most people despite what side they're on call it Derry

Knickerknack · 13/08/2024 00:24

We all say Londonderry. It's not a big deal but very common

rosyvalentine · 13/08/2024 00:33

Derry. One of my parents is from Derry and my family have never, ever referred to it as Londonderry.

You live you learn. I always thought it was just two different cities.

Phew .. glad it’s not just me 😳😳
I think we’re in the minority though 😳😳

ReadingSoManyThreads · 13/08/2024 00:41

Londonderry. Occasionally, call it City of Derry, County Londonderry.

English husband calls it Derry to wind me up 😂 (lighthearted banter - I'm Northern Irish)

Topseyt123 · 13/08/2024 00:42

My Dad's family are from Northern Ireland and I believe they would refer to it as Londonderry.

I'm English and was brought up over here, not in Northern Ireland. I prefer to call it Derry. That is its historical name after all. Londonderry was imposed during the plantation of Ulster.

AgileGreenSeal · 13/08/2024 00:46

Derry

SkeletonBatsflyatnight · 13/08/2024 00:53

Dh's very Unionist family all call it Derry.

RhetoricalRectangle · 13/08/2024 00:58

ROI and we've always said Derry. I remember seeing Londonderry written on BBC weather one day and asking my mum what that was. I must have been about 10.

MorvernBlack · 12/08/2024 23:07

Friend's Irish mum calls it Derry City 🤷‍♀️

This is pretty common because the city of Derry (Londonderry) is in the county of Derry (Londonderry). Same way people say Cork City or County Cork because just "Cork" can be confusing. Or New York City/New York State.

TooBigForMyBoots · 13/08/2024 03:06

Derry

sashh · 13/08/2024 03:26

Is the tern 'stroke city' still used?

Londonderry to me is a village in Yorkshire or an are in the West midlands.

snowlady4 · 13/08/2024 04:38

Both are used in Northern Ireland. Occasionally, someone might correct you to their preference but most won't bat an eyelid at either. You won't need to say it that much I'm sure, don't worry about it!

Hectorscalling · 13/08/2024 04:43

My mum and all her family are from Derry. We still have lots of family who live there.

Non of us ever call in Londonderry.

OfMiceandWomen · 13/08/2024 05:54

Derry

Barleycat · 13/08/2024 05:57

My brother and SIL live nearby, definitely Derry! The london bit is usually crossed out on the road signs on the NI side of the border.

TheMarzipanDildo · 13/08/2024 06:13

It depends who you want to piss off doesn’t it?

Greategret · 13/08/2024 06:29

My family is from Donegal. They say Derry.

Pennyswimsplash · 13/08/2024 06:52
