Did your baby fit into first size clothes at birth or did they go straight into 0-1 month?

Figuring out how many of each to buy.

First size = up to 7.8lbs
Up to 1m = up to 10lbs

Thought I’d ask here to see what’s common. If baby did fit into first size, how long for roughly?

Both mine needed tiny baby size for at least a month...

I think it depends on how long your baby is. And some brands come up bigger than others (when my kids were wee Tesco came up small and George Asda came up on the big side, might have all changed now).

I think I had about a dozen each of vests and babygros in newborn size to start as I wasn't expecting a small baby and had no idea what to buy! DH got sent to the nearest supermarket for tiny baby size once DC was allowed to wear clothes.

DS was 10.11. Went straight into 3 months.

Gymmum82 · 12/08/2024 21:23

Dd2 was 10.2. She went straight in to 0-3. Dd1 wore newborn for maybe a week or 2. She was 8.5

Mine were both 7lb 1 born and got a good month out of first size.

DoublePeonies · 12/08/2024 21:27

7lb DS1 needed 0-3.
8lb DS2 went into newborn.....
DS1 was (and is) all limbs. DS2 is a slightly more normal shape.

123456abcdef · 12/08/2024 21:28

Mine were 7lb 5 and 8lb 4 both went straight into up to one month, they were far too long for newborn

2Old2Tango · 12/08/2024 21:29

My first was 6lb 4oz and my mum had to rush out and buy some tiny baby clothes as we'd not got anything to fit.

MiseryIn · 12/08/2024 21:30

Tiny baby for at least a month. Newborn swamped her

Cantfindanavailablename · 12/08/2024 21:31

Mine were 6lbs6 and 6lbs2. We had to go and get tiny baby clothes which they both wore for maybe three or four weeks

Sparkle88K · 12/08/2024 21:31

First size for the first month, then he moved up to 0-3 months
My DS weighed 6.11

invisiblecat · 12/08/2024 21:33

Newborn clothes swamped mine, she was only 4 lb. We had to go and get some tiny baby ones. Fortunately the hospital sold outfits for tinies. Honestly, we could have bought Baby Annabell stuff and she'd have fit in them.

Autumn1990 · 12/08/2024 21:33

My first went into 0-3 month. They were slightly too big but nothing major. I did have 3 first size
My second needed first size and I only had 3 baby grows so my mum had to nip out and buy some more!

LegoHouse274 · 12/08/2024 21:33

DC1 did, they were 6lb 14 at birth.

DC2 I was told from a couple of growth scans they would be around the same size. However they turned out to be 8lb 6 so didn't!

TheFairyCaravan · 12/08/2024 21:34

Mine went into 0-3 months because they were 58 and 60cm when they were born.

DGS was in upto 1 month for a week, because he was long like his daddy, despite both of them bejng 3 weeks early.

InTheRainOnATrain · 12/08/2024 21:37

DD was 7lbs-ish and wore newborn for the first month which I think would be the same as ‘up to 1 month’ just different definitions from different shops?!
DS was just over 8lbs and also really long so had to go straight into 0-3, fortunately the newborns were neutral coloured hand-me-downs so I hadn’t wasted any money!

PartnersInCrime · 12/08/2024 21:39

Both just over 8lbs and went into "newborn"... is that not a size anymore or have I made that up?

Luluem · 12/08/2024 21:41

Mine was just under 7lbs (3.08kg) and I didn’t buy her any newborn stuff as had assumed 0-3 would be fine. She was definitely too small for them for about 6 weeks. Have bought newborn stuff in anticipation for the second baby being similar size!

sunshineandshowers40 · 12/08/2024 22:21

DC1and 2 fitted in first size although DC1 was out of then quickly. DC3 went straight to 0-3 months as he was nearly 10lbs, couldn't get him in the smaller sizes.

CrispAppleStrudels · 12/08/2024 22:25

Dd1 - tiny baby until maybe 6 weeks? then newborn etc. Was always a size range behind where she should have been until about 1yr ish. 2.6kg at birth

Dd2 - tiny baby for a fortnight? More consistently following the age ranges in clothing although she is very long so we are having to move up more for length than weight. 2.8kg at birth.

TribeofFfive · 12/08/2024 22:27

I find the clothes really big fittings. My boys were all in tiny baby for about a month. They were 5lb 9oz, 6oz & 6lb 6oz
DD was 7lb 10oz and was in newborn / first size for about 6 weeks.

S0livagant · 12/08/2024 22:28

Some brands might have fitted perfectly for a week, but what's the point with an average sized baby? No way am I buying anything that isn't likely to last a month.

RainSodOff · 12/08/2024 22:28

Born at 35+6, so teeny tiny clothes!

Wacadu · 12/08/2024 22:29

10lb 10 chonky DS went straight into 3-6 months. My parents had to panic buy the bigger size and bring it all to the hospital. Ended up giving all the smaller stuff away.

17caterpillars1mouse · 12/08/2024 22:30

All three of mine fit in newborn, in fact newborn swamped my two girls (6lb 7oz and 6lb 9oz). My boy (7lb 4oz) had plenty of growing room too

LoquaciousPineapple · 12/08/2024 22:32

My son was 7lb 7oz and very long and he still fit into the newborn sleep suits we bought for about a month. Loads of people told us not to bother with newborn, waste of money etc. Wish I hadn't listened, as it meant spending time in hospital ordering newborn stuff on next day delivery.

Unless you are expecting to have a very heavy baby, I'd definitely have some newborn things to be safe.
