Did your baby fit into first size clothes at birth or did they go straight into 0-1 month?

Figuring out how many of each to buy.

First size = up to 7.8lbs
Up to 1m = up to 10lbs

Thought I’d ask here to see what’s common. If baby did fit into first size, how long for roughly?

Ds1 was 7.12 and newborn was big on him. I got some tiny baby vests and babygrows as a hand-me-down from SIL and they were perfect for the first couple of weeks.

1-3 didn't fit until pretty much 5 weeks and he was more or less spot on for label size for the first year.

Ds2 was 7.10 but chunkier somehow, so newborn size was perfect and then similar to his big brother.

We're not a tall family though, and didn't have long babies.

After reading on MN about how many babies were going straight into 0-3 months because newborn was too small I carefully packed a mix of newborn and 0-3 months to cover all possibilities.

DC1 was born at 41 weeks weighing just under 6lb and my mother had to go and emergency buy tiny baby. I think it must have been 2 or 3 months before he could sensibly wear 0-3 months.

Even though the tiny baby was used for only a few weeks it was worth it because they fit so much better than newborn. But it was only a few sleep suits and bodies rather than lots of outfits.

DC1 was in tiny baby for a month, despite not being particularly tiny, weight wise - he ended up in tiny baby for four weeks exactly before we moved to newborn. I think he was just incredibly dense.

DC2 went into newborn straightaway, at 7lb on the nose, and stayed in them for about a month.

My older 3 were all just under 9lb and wore newborn (up to 10lb) for about a month, although they fitted into 0-3 months too.

ds4 was 7lb 2oz and he had hydrocephalus so he wore up to 5lb, then up to 7.5lb in the nicu and then up to 10lb when he came home at 4 weeks. He went into 0-3 months at about 3 months old.

ds5 was 7lb 6oz and he was in up to 10lb until 3 months, then he went into 0-3 months.

Both mine wore tiny baby for ages. Dd was 4lb12! She was in 6 months when she was 1 year old. It's impossible to tell really in advance.

We're tall and I'd been a big baby myself (well, actually, big enough for the 0-3 mth weight range quoted above despite being 5 weeks early!). My two were both 2 weeks late. I was fairly confident starting with 0-3 mths stuff, we had maybe one or two "newborn" items given to us that got minimal use in the first couple of weeks. Admittedly, I used babygros/vests under handmade nighties at first, the nighties were then able to go on to 6 months plus IIRC, so had a lot of flex.

Ds was 7lb 11oz and is still in newborn nearly a month later
Niece was nearly 9lb and was somehow in tiny baby for the first week!

Just like adults their clothes size depends as much on the shape of them as their weight.

I also don't think there’s much difference between 0-1 and newborn and I feel like sizing varies a lot between brands - ds is currently wearing a 0-1 onesie that just fits him but has newborn onesies from other brands that are still big on him

Ruffpuff · 12/08/2024 23:31

They said ds was going to be big so I mostly bought 0-3 months and some 0-1 month. He was born at 8lb 10oz and I was shocked that we had to go out and buy newborn clothes as he was swamped!

He outgrew newborn within 2 weeks though!

Mine were 6lb 2 and 6lb respectively. Both of them were in newborn size for about 6 weeks. With ds1 we didn't have enough newborn babygrows so had to buy more. Could have got tiny baby particularly for ds2 who dropped down to 5lb 5 but just rolled up the sleeves. I remember being in hospital with ds1 and others commented how dinky he was. But as you can see from this thread some babies skip the newborn size altogether.
