Got home to find someone in my parking space

Popped out to the library earlier and came back to find a random car in my space. It's not a proper driveway but it's the end of the lane down the side of my house, my detached garage is next to the house at the end of the lane.

We have houses that back onto the lane (adjacent to our building) and I'm sure it's one of these houses that the owner of the car has gone into, their visitors have parked there a couple of times before.

I've just parked up their arse and gone into the house, waiting on the bell ringing. Was reluctant to do this as our neighbours have right of way over the lane for their pwn vehicles but it's a visitor to their house, so fuck it.

I've got an idea. Not sure whether it will work or not......why don't you knock on your neighbours door and ask their visitors to move their car as it is on your land? You know, engage in conversation like adults do.

rayofsunshine86 · 12/08/2024 21:34

For all the posters perplexed as to why someone might park in front of the garage... Who parks their car inside a garage? I've never known anybody park in a garage.

ILoveToCleanSaidNooneEver · 12/08/2024 21:27

I think the fact is that the person parking there doesn't know it is private land. You do need a sign to highlight this.

Are they actually blocking access to your garage though? It looks a bit like that from your drawing. If that is the case, it does change my opinion.

Even if it’s not obviously private land the car is parked in such a way that it blocks access to the garage. Granted I don’t think anyone parks in a garage anymore but that’s not the point. It’s clearly not a space to park in.

Blink282 · 12/08/2024 21:34

I am going to try and work “as any vacant fucker could see” into a conversation tomorrow. At work, probably, there’s a lot of em around.

OP turn all your lights off and pretend to be asleep. Till noon tomorrow if you can.

ChishiyaBat · 12/08/2024 21:35

People park over the bottom of my drive and it's so annoying and rude, they can see the car and motorbike on the drive, but they don't think oh maybe they'll need to get out, oh no they just park and leave it, Plus they are parking on a junction, but they still do it

Yes I agree. Second paragraph. I looked through the OP's comments and couldn't find the answer. Whilst it looks as if it is blocking access, the door could be at the side.

But perhaps the owners of the garage would like to be able to park in front of their own garage?

People used to block my Dad's empty drive.

If he spoke to them they would say that the drive was empty.

So he would ask if they could see the building at the end of the drive.

"A garage".

"Yes-any clue as to what might be in it?"

We do. The garage was built by the previous owners and is meant to be able to take 3 cars. We have 2 in there plus tons of junk and DH's office and workshop. It's great on a freezing morning being able to open the garage door and get straight into the car without faffing about defrosting windscreens. My DF's cars are both in garages.

@rayofsunshine86 Well, garages were originally intended to house cars! But you’re right, many people fill them with stuff instead. 🤣

ReacherSaidNothing · 12/08/2024 21:14

I am blocking them. If one of them knocks and asks me to move so they can reverse out then I will, but I'll be making it clear why I'm there (although it should be clear to any vacant fuckwit who sees the setup)

Ignore people on here make them knock. Iv had issues with a parking space and neighbours some people are proper cf and have to learn. I tried the polite thing with my neighbours it didn't work. I contacted the police they said its civil not criminal so couldn't do anything so I blocked them in and got drunk so I couldn't move my car they've never parked their since

MtClair · 12/08/2024 21:41

marniemae · 12/08/2024 20:53

Couldn't you just park somewhere else? I cant imagine getting so worked up about a parking space

That’s not a parking space on the road though.
Its more like someone has parked in her garden.

Would you be happy with that?

We do (as it's actually a question on the insurance renewal). But I can get both my cars into my double garage. Someone else on the estate (built c.25 years ago) found their normal size car didnt actually fit. So no one in that house has ever been able physically to put their car in the garage.

marniemae · 12/08/2024 21:42

@Another2Cats I havé a backbone 😆 i just don't really care where I park my car, my next door neighbours 3 adult children all have cars now so parking outside my house is rare, I just park where there is space and walk up I don't really get the big deal. As long as you can park within a 5 minute walk what bother is it? I guess it's annoying if you're in a rush but I just can't imagine ever getting stressed about a parking space and think the day I do I need to get a hobby or something because I clearly don't have enough going on if it bothered me.

Saz12 · 12/08/2024 21:43

Unless you know whose car it is,you could just leave a note on windscreen daying "this parking area is owned by No. 13 MN Street, and isnt part of the public road. Please park elsewhere next time". Photocopy it for future use, but block in all repeat offenders.

Op you've caught the wrong end of the stick here entirely. But I do understand tbf.

Tha's what I thought: Performative competitive dimness : QED

Also this. Plus a note on their windscreen if they dont answer

ReacherSaidNothing · 12/08/2024 21:48

Update:

I had a look out the back gate and the car is gone! The only way they got out would have been to knock on the door of the guy who owns the garage next to mine, as his car was parked in front of it. He must have had to go back and forward half a dozen times to get out.
Obviously too cowardly to ask me to move. Hopefully he gets the message.

I've moved my car forward because even though I'm annoyed, I'm not an inconsiderate wanker!

RB68 · 12/08/2024 21:55

its blocking her garage of course its clear its not a space to be used by anyone ffs, I would question whether the neighbours right of access even covers that bit - ie the area where the car is parked is not on a route to neighbours part. You should keep a RoA clear for access purposes obv, but this is literally the route into her garage as well as her land

TriesNotToBeCynical · 12/08/2024 21:56

ReacherSaidNothing · 12/08/2024 19:34

No, I own that piece of land. We moves in recently and it was clear from the deeds that it belongs to us

If the land is part of a public highway then owning the underlying land give you no rights at all over it.

I bet the car next to yours is who they were visiting.

Shame you didn't have CCTV to go and watch that back.

Probably a good job you weren't parked too close, they could have damaged your car getting out if they didn't have the decency to come to the door.

You seem to misunderstand the situation. You are clearly talking about on street parking in your case.

This is a totally different situation. Do you have a garage? I would guess that the answer to that is; No.

The OP owns a bit of land that is in front of her garage. Another car is parked there blocking the entrance to her garage.

"i just don't really care where I park my car"

So you would honestly be quite happy for some random car to park on what is effectively your driveway and block your garage?

Genevieva · 12/08/2024 22:26

ReacherSaidNothing · 12/08/2024 20:10

Yes it's something like that basically!

When you own land that others have a right of way over it is called an easement. The details are often set out in your tithe deeds, but equally often they are not, but are de facto through use. Eg my granny owned the whole drive to her house and a couple of houses built subsequently. They needed her permission before they were built. Otherwise the buyers would not be able to access their homes. She could have charged for it, but she didn’t.
