Got home to find someone in my parking space

ReacherSaidNothing · 12/08/2024 19:30

Popped out to the library earlier and came back to find a random car in my space. It's not a proper driveway but it's the end of the lane down the side of my house, my detached garage is next to the house at the end of the lane.

We have houses that back onto the lane (adjacent to our building) and I'm sure it's one of these houses that the owner of the car has gone into, their visitors have parked there a couple of times before.

I've just parked up their arse and gone into the house, waiting on the bell ringing. Was reluctant to do this as our neighbours have right of way over the lane for their pwn vehicles but it's a visitor to their house, so fuck it.

Couldn't you just park somewhere else? I cant imagine getting so worked up about a parking space

She does park the 2nd car elsewhere but has paid for that land at the side so that only she can park there

If they have a right of way over the land, should you be blocking it with your car?

The OP said they don’t have right of way over all of it. Just access to get their cars in and out. Why is it OK for some CF to park there and not OP ?

@HotCrossBunplease

bevause a) it was built in the 50's & my car was not (& it's only a focus) & b) I don't want to.

ok by you??

🙄🙄

Are you the OP?

I'm not sure why I should. Part of the reason we paid almost twice as much for this house compared to what we sold the last one for was due to the parking. Okay our kids now have their own bedrooms and we have more space, but the better parking was a big draw also

She's not blocking anyone, she deliberately pmarks by her garage so the neighbours who have right of way can get in and out their drives, its not a communal parking area or a parking space for non residents

MilkyCappuchino · 12/08/2024 20:54

Does it really matter??????

@MilkyCappuchino

yes, yes it does.

the OP has paid more for a house that has parking, this was important to her after previously only having street parking.

not to forget this inconsiderate twerp has parked in front of her garage, what if she did have her car in there & needed to get out??

vlearly not, that's why we have user names so you can tell one poster from another.

nocoolnamesleft · 12/08/2024 20:59

Have a glass of wine. Then you sadly won't be able to move your car.

Rosscameasdoody · 12/08/2024 20:59

HotCrossBunplease · 12/08/2024 19:37

Why haven’t you put your car in your garage?

Er, because some CF has parked in front of it ? Fairly obvious really.

Easipeelerie · 12/08/2024 21:00

Is your car still blocking them in? I hope so - rude of them to block entry to your garage.

Marbledwhite · 12/08/2024 21:01

I'm guessing that mrsdineen2's attempt to illustrate the competitive dimness has failed - or worked!😁

OK, so let's suppose that somebody parks right outside the entrance to your garage. Are you meekly going to walk away and say nothing?

If you would just meekly walk away then can I suggest that you maybe need to grow a bit of a backbone and start standing up for yourself?

"I cant imagine getting so worked up about a parking space"

So you own one parking space for your car. And some other CFer decides that they want to park in your only parking space.

Are you honestly saying that you wouldn't be, at least a tiny little bit slightly unhappy that somebody else was parking on your property?

AnneElliott · 12/08/2024 21:04

I agree with blocking them in - it's the only way they'll learn. We used to get people parking over our drive in our old house and I'd always make life difficult for them so it was too much hassle to do it again.

One I came home to find a cab driver parked on my drive. I blocked him in and when he wasn't polite in asking me to let him out I refused to move it. He called the police and they turned up and told him it was easier to ask me nicely rather than expect them to deal with it. I did then move it but wasted a couple of hours of his time.

TBF, you were answering a question someone asked to the OP.
People do sometimes name change between threads so it's not a wild assumption.

ReacherSaidNothing · 12/08/2024 20:26

I'm not badass enough to clamp or tow 😂
a few months ago I turned into the lane to find another car in my spot, I parked behind them and got out but before I could walk away the owner came running out my neighbours house, apologised profusely and moved his car to the actual street

In the UK it's illegal to clamp and you won't be able to get it towed either. The laws around parking on private property are awful in the UK, there's not a lot you can do unless they are blocking you in so that you can't get your car out.

Sweetteaplease · 12/08/2024 21:06

If it's your land and it happen often, get a sign

Silvers11 · 12/08/2024 21:08

@ReacherSaidNothing Do let us know the outcome. I hope you didn't move it though. And yes - a Big sign on the Garage doors asking saying not to park in front of it as it is Private Parking in front of the Garage might help ( or not - there are CF's everywhere)

It’s actually not. You just can’t take it on yourself to do it. The police, the local council or the DVLA can clamp and tow away cars or other vehicles parked illegally on roads or public/private land. You have to report it and get it dealt with through official channels.

m00rfarm · 12/08/2024 21:10

If there is not enough room for you to park two cars outside your garage, how are you not blocking everyone if you are blocking the car parked in your normal space?

I am blocking them. If one of them knocks and asks me to move so they can reverse out then I will, but I'll be making it clear why I'm there (although it should be clear to any vacant fuckwit who sees the setup)

You’ve clearly never seen a name change fail then. They happen often when people use different names to post in different parts of the site, which is entirely permissible here. But I’m confused why you’d answer a question directed at the OP 🤷‍♀️. I don’t give a toss about your parking habits.

Not from the OP, no.

LatteLady · 12/08/2024 21:18

From your diagram, they are blocking your access to your garage... so answer the door with a drink in your hand... You know the rest.

anon2423 · 12/08/2024 21:24

A lot of people seem confused by this, but a right of pedestrian and vehicular access for the neighbours doesn’t make the lane shared ownership, or give the neighbours a right to park there (unless that’s a right which has been created). I would expect your solicitor to have received confirmation from the Sellers solicitor regarding the extent of any rights, so if a right of parking has been created you should know. (Unless it wasn’t sold by the previous owner but that’s a whole other ball game!)

A right of access and egress will often give a right for guests to use it for access, so you may not be able to tell them not to visit their friend via the lane, but if there’s no right for them to park on it nip it in the bud. Rights can occur through longterm use in some places and you don’t want them to be created.

Perhaps install a bollard, or some type of signage as it’s entirely possible the guest doesn’t know and thought your garage was derelict so it wouldn’t matter if it was blocked in. (Although if that’s the garage door they’re parked in front of I think they’re fully aware they shouldn’t be there!)

Can you confirm which jurisdiction you’re in? It makes a difference as silly as it sounds

ILoveToCleanSaidNooneEver · 12/08/2024 21:27

I think the fact is that the person parking there doesn't know it is private land. You do need a sign to highlight this.

Are they actually blocking access to your garage though? It looks a bit like that from your drawing. If that is the case, it does change my opinion.
