Got home to find someone in my parking space

Popped out to the library earlier and came back to find a random car in my space. It's not a proper driveway but it's the end of the lane down the side of my house, my detached garage is next to the house at the end of the lane.

We have houses that back onto the lane (adjacent to our building) and I'm sure it's one of these houses that the owner of the car has gone into, their visitors have parked there a couple of times before.

I've just parked up their arse and gone into the house, waiting on the bell ringing. Was reluctant to do this as our neighbours have right of way over the lane for their pwn vehicles but it's a visitor to their house, so fuck it.

Blimey. What’s the call out fee for a tow truck?

It’s almost $400 but then you get it refunded when the person goes to collect their car, as they have to pay it.

MissMoneyFairy · 12/08/2024 20:15

Is there a drive in front if your garage or does the road end at your garage. What land do you actually own like pp drawing shows, how do the three on the left get in and out of their drives.

thinkfast · 12/08/2024 20:15

Don't feel guilty for blocking them in OP. They had no right to park on your land in front of your garage! Don't feel in a rush to move your car if and when they ask you to, either!

DisforDarkChocolate · 12/08/2024 20:15

I think it's very obvious you don't park Infront of someone's garage!

What sort of $?

BunfightBetty · 12/08/2024 20:16

Don’t move your car! Even if it unclear whose space it is, it’s blindingly obvious you don’t park right up in front of someone’s garage so they can’t get in or out. The culprit deserves to have to knock and explain themselves.

Are you not in the UK?

The UK doesn't use dollars....

Not a drive as such, but the land is immediately at the side of my house (no pavement or anything separating it and our bins sit there too).
We drive our car right up to the garage door so others can get their cars in and out. It means we cant use the extra space to park the other car there but we dont mind that

Are you not in the UK?

Presumably not, you can’t just have a car towed from private land in the UK.

BunfightBetty · 12/08/2024 20:17

$ is dollars, which is presumably why they are asking what kind.

TappyGilmore · 12/08/2024 20:19

BunfightBetty · 12/08/2024 20:15

Ooh, this is hardcore. I love it! How do you call out a tow truck and how much does it cost? Can anyone call them?

I’m not UK so it may not be the same, but I just found the company online (although they knew the name as I’ve seen the trucks driving around) and called and booked. I did have to provide a copy of a utilities bill to prove that it is my property that I’d asked them to tow from.

Er yes, but no idea if @TappyGilmore lives in the US, Hong Kong, New Zealand, Australia…

SevenMarshmallows · 12/08/2024 20:20

If leaving your car where it is means the driver of the other car will have to come speak to you, that's an easy way to ensure that at least this visitor learns that this parking space is yours. A sign would be good to inform other visitors, of course.

MissMoneyFairy · 12/08/2024 20:20

Even if your garage looks like it's falling apart zi wouldn't park in front of it, it obviously belongs to someone who needs to access it but some people don't care, if you do own the piece of land then you need a sign and speak to the council about having a proper sign and maybe lines put in if that's possible. People ignore unofficial no parking, private property signs.

Thanks for that. I’m wondering if it’s the same here, though I’m dubious, as generally the law here can be unhelpful against those who are being sinned against (tends to decree we have to just let it happen and hope for justice to be done after the event).

Oops, sorry, I was directing that to Tappy. Just got a bit carried away with excitement at the thought of doing this to a problem neighbour! Grin

Yes this

Also will send message to neighbour that their guests cannot park there

mathanxiety · 12/08/2024 20:25

Can you paint the perimeter of the space that is yours, and add a sign to the effect that the space is private parking, no trespassing ever...

You could measure the space out properly and use spray paint.

ReacherSaidNothing · 12/08/2024 20:26

I'm not badass enough to clamp or tow 😂
a few months ago I turned into the lane to find another car in my spot, I parked behind them and got out but before I could walk away the owner came running out my neighbours house, apologised profusely and moved his car to the actual street

MissMoneyFairy · 12/08/2024 20:27

Oh right do you own that whole strop at the side, is it tarmac or looks like a road. So the sign needs to be at the start of the land, and on your garage saving something like no through road, no parking, private property. If you need to can you put a chain across and give the right of way neighbours a key.

Shade17 · 12/08/2024 20:28

I'm not badass enough to clamp or tow

You can’t anyway.

Ilovemyshed · 12/08/2024 20:29

So they parked in front of your garage? So just put a polite sign up on the garage that denotes it as "Garage to xxx House, No parking, Access required at all times"

Another2Cats · 12/08/2024 20:31

ReacherSaidNothing · 12/08/2024 19:53

This drawing is a bit crap. Our garages are set further back, there's space for two cars down the side of my house but we only park one of the cars there so the neighbours can get their cars in and out their own spaces

So they parked right outside the entrance to your garage, blocking it?

That's not really a case of them "not knowing" that's a case of them being really CFers.

I was a bit confused by your OP, but if the diagram is accurate then, yes, block them in.

I've had people doing that before. Where we used to live, it was on a road that was all double yellow lines or residents parking only.

We had off road parking and the number of times that some random car would just end up on the parking area (especially at the weekend) was so annoying.

Yes, we just used to block them in as well. Eventually somebody would come round and knock on our door. But, oh sorry, we've just sat down to Sunday lunch and I've had a couple of glasses of wine so I'm not in a fit state to drive a car at the moment.

TomeTome · 12/08/2024 20:34

I’d just wait for them to come and apologise.
