Hand infected (Warning, gross photos)

I do have another thread on this but I've been on antibiotics since Thursday and it's just getting worse.

It's still hot and new puss filled blisters are appearing.

Shouldn't the antibiotics have kicked in by now?

It's so sore and embarrassing

@PIPpityDoodah be careful with the cotton gloves small fibers can come off, have you any gauze or similar to cover it? I also would let it "air" as much as possible but be careful if sun exposure now and in the future.
It does look a lot better today x

KeirSpoutsTwaddle · 14/08/2024 12:07

Rubber gloves are awful. I never wear them.

If I need to use nasties, I use loads of barrier cream on my hands, rub it in well and crack on. Then when you wash your hands afterwards, the barrier cream comes off and you moisturise again.

Cornettoninja · 14/08/2024 15:12

I have to admit that yesterday after seeing the Dr I did pop all the puss filled blisters and pushed as much of it out as I could and it does seem to have helped

probably should absolutely not do that… but yeah - I’d probably do the same Grin

I think the salt soaks @itsgettingweird suggested might be good, especially if there are any open wounds left from bursting.

I have this type of eczema and I absolutely had to pop the blisters. One because it was the only way to stop the horrendous itching, and if I didn't I would have scratched the top off anyway. And 2 because I can't leave things like that alone.

NigelHarmansNewWife · 14/08/2024 16:31

I wear latex washing up gloves for cleaning - I seem to get a reaction to the latex ones, especially if my hands sweat in them.

PIPpityDoodah · 14/08/2024 23:56

It's spreading up my thumb :( This was not on my thumb a few days ago

I've been looking and PPP or palmoplantar pustular psoriasis looks very similar or just pustular psoriasis and it's not infected and is autoimmune related.

It says ots often related to middle aged women with thyroid issues (I've had subclininical hypothyroidism for over 4 years, untreated) and also people with nickle allergies (which I have)

I feel incredibly stressed :(

OP do you get your thyroid checked regularly? TSH, T3 and T4?

Wahine24 · 15/08/2024 00:09

Crikey you've been unlucky with this, I'm amazed you've not scratched your hand off! Has the medication had any effect? Surely it should have kicked in? Think your GP needs another look, hopefully they get a better idea after the sample was taken, do you know how long that will take to get the testing done? . Really hope you get to the bottom of it and get some relief x

PIPpityDoodah · 11/08/2024 12:42

No.

The day the small spots appeared I cleaned out my washing machine drawer with lots of layers of fabric softener and I used bleach without gloves.

So I thought it was that.

Have you seen pictures of this new Monkey Pox virus that is going around?

I think you need to be seen by someone serious.

Wahine24 · 15/08/2024 00:14

Pretty sure it's not mpox, she op has not felt unwell

SantoriniSunrise · 15/08/2024 00:23

It looks like you burnt it with the bleach, and now it's become very irritated and infected.

ItsMeMarioo · 15/08/2024 00:32

It looks EXACTLY like the type of eczema my Dad has. I can’t remember the name but he can get really poorly with it. He’s been hospitalised multiple times with sepsis. He’s now on long term steroids and gets red light therapy. Please do take care OP and go to A&E if you feel at all unwell. Sepsis spreads fast.

AuClaireDeLune · 15/08/2024 00:41

I have palmoplantar psoriasis which looks, when it’s bad, like your 2nd and 3rd photos above though not the first. I have it on the palms of my hands and the soles of my feet. It inflames and itches really badly, forms filled spots which I scratch in my sleep, scabs then forms a brown crust. Heat makes it worse, particularly a warm duvet over my feet.
For years I believed cleaning chemicals were responsible as I started with it on my hands. The specialist told me it is inherited. Do you have anyone in your family with psoriasis such as parents or grandparents? I couldn’t cite anyone but she was adamant. Perhaps my family had hidden it.
Stress brings it on in my case. Light therapy is available which I didn’t find particularly effective. Alcohol can exacerbate psoriasis - going teetotal is worth pursuing if you aren’t already. A recent course of ABs to which I reacted brought it on after years of freedom. Fingers crossed you get it sorted.

That looks like dishydrotic eczema that is now infected. Think it’s also called something like pompholyx.

I get it on my hands and feet. The first time it appeared I didn’t know what it was, GP refused to see me in person and just told me to use hydrocortisone. It ended up infected, feet so swollen I couldn’t put on shoes. When I went to urgent care the doctor laughed at the GP and said ‘would you use a watering can to fight a forest fire’. I ended up with oral antibiotics, antibiotic cream and three different levels of steroid cream.

Is that not just what it looks like when it gets bad, as opposed to being infected?

Mine was even worse than that on my feet but I didn't think they were infected 😂

Wahine24 · 15/08/2024 00:58

*the op not she op

voiceofastar · 15/08/2024 00:59

Has a doctor actually seen you face to face and had a proper look? I think you need to see someone tomorrow for an urgent appointment.

voiceofastar · 15/08/2024 01:20

Also try not to worry, especially not about MPox FFS. It doesn't look like PPP to me but I'm not a doctor, I just have my own history eczema and psoriasis. Obviously if you start to feel unwell, or it starts spreading very rapidly, call 111 or go to A&E, otherwise I'd insist on an urgent GP appointment tomorrow. Hopefully you'll have the swab results back soon and then they'll know what kind of bacteria they're dealing with. It's very distressing when it starts spreading like this and it must be affecting your sleep, too. Best wishes OP Flowers

namechangeforthisi · 15/08/2024 01:30

I think it's started out with a chemical irritation and got infected. Could be MRSA if the antibiotics aren't working. You should get medical attention soon, I would just go to A and E

Caswallonthefox · 15/08/2024 01:42

That looks like a horrendous case of pompholyx/dishydrotic excema to me, which can be irritated by chemicals and is also caused by stress.
If that was my hand, I'd be sat with a pin and some tissues, popping the blisters, then I'd slather it in antiseptic cream and cover with a wound pad. And live in hope that it will go away.

OBVIOUSLY it's not a recommended way to deal with it. I would ask your doc about pompholyx.

voiceofastar · 15/08/2024 01:56

Just to add OP, the antibiotics won't stop the blisters from forming and spreading, that's what the steroid cream is for. So don't be alarmed if it takes the blisters longer to settle down, it doesn't mean the ABs aren't working to treat the infected blisters.

ihaveanaughtydog · 15/08/2024 02:24

I get this on my hand when I'm in the sun. Every bloody holiday. Itch like a mother. Get them on tops of feet as well.
Anti histamine cream and tablets help, but I have to keep it out of the sun to get rid of it fully. Mine has never got that bad though.

Guavafish1 · 15/08/2024 03:22

Go see a dermatologist

3luckystars · 15/08/2024 03:45

If it is spreading, you HAVE to go to the hospital at this stage. We will keep you company.

Also, why are you cleaning so much? Can’t it wait?

Please get that seen by a real life doctor as soon as possible now. Good luck x

thistlepiedpiper · 15/08/2024 04:49

Oh my word, how have you not been referred to a dermatologist via the gp?
I would keep on with antibiotics and cream but also ask to be referred

I hope you feel ok! X
