People leaving Twitter in droves

Because of Elon's toxicity and the general cesspit nature of it. Anyone joining them?

OP posts:
Fifthtimelucky · 09/08/2024 14:31

I have never joined Twitter, but if I had I'd be leaving it!

RoseandVioletCreams · 09/08/2024 14:35

It's definitely a cess pit and lots of sex sights randomly on there also.

What's the alternative though?
When it was twitter it was amazing for immediate news locally, nationally and so on

80smonster · 09/08/2024 14:44

Yeah, I’ve disliked its playground mentality for ages. It being renamed X was the end for me. Now I don’t bother checking it at all.

TheFlis · 09/08/2024 14:45

I gave up on it ages ago, the algorithms they brought in made it virtually unusable.

Warmfeet · 09/08/2024 14:47

Before Elon bought it, no GC views were heard anywhere except on Mumsnet.
Thanks to EM, hopefully the idiocies of Gender Ideology and the power of Mermaids and Stonewall is being cut back.

BeaRF75 · 09/08/2024 14:47

Twitter is only as good or bad as who/what you follow.
There is no politics/social commentary on my feed. It's almost entirely sports and other hobbies.
So, at the moment, my Twitter feed is delightful because it's pretty much 100% Olympics.
So you don't need to leave, folks, just be more selective and do a bit of editing.

It's not what you see though. It's Elin Musk and his lies,, the propaganda he is stirring up

Namechangeforthis88 · 09/08/2024 14:50

I stopped looking at it as stuff popped up in my feed that I found upsetting. Definitely never followed or liked, it was promoted to me.

Gcn · 09/08/2024 14:50

It's awful just now. I know folk say they just show you stuff according to your algorithms, but mine is just full of racist crap just now.

OlympicsFanGirl · 09/08/2024 14:51

I left months ago when he took over twitter.

But it was a cesspit for a long time before that

My organisation no longer spends advertising budget there because

  • our customers don't use it anymore
  • it doesn't fit with our values

Yes it's what you make of it. Mine is all sports and comedians. I don't see the racism, homophobia, transphobia etc thankfully.

Mainoo72 · 09/08/2024 15:00

I still use it. Mine is mostly sport, holiday, hobby related. What you look at & like affects content, so if you don’t click on racist, sexist stuff you shouldn’t see it.

EasySkankin · 09/08/2024 15:03

Twitter is a unique platform, in my opinion, it’s better to have a broader and varied diet of social media, so I don’t think people should leave Twitter. Elon Musk is a mixed bag, he likes being controversial, but he is ethically sincere, brave and open, so I’d never think of him as toxic.

MegsNaiceJam · 09/08/2024 15:05

I’m not leaving, I have a great professional network on there and never see any crap. block anything you don’t like.

It's a good site!

BeaRF75 Same here!

I detest the vile shit that owns Twitter but I actually like the site. I'm under: @OhCobblers2That I seldom have any trouble from anyone on there, unlike with Facebook where I was regularly pestered, and I have my own ''groups'' such as animals, comedy etc.

Starboy14 · 09/08/2024 15:13

I like it. I don't think Elon is toxic at all. He's the reason I stayed on it, it used to be alot worse.

heartsinvisiblefury · 09/08/2024 15:14

Left when he bought it. Was inevitable that it would get worse.

Disasterclass · 09/08/2024 15:25

Is there one place where a lot of people have gone to? When Elon Musk took over and lots left they seemed to scatter. No point going somewhere with hardly any people on it, so have been holding out to see if the majority settle somewhere

MtClair · 09/08/2024 15:28

I’m still there because that’s the only place I found where I can get support re my illness.

I also agree that you need to curate what you see. It’s not that hard tbh. I hardly see anything bonkers these days.

I do have an issue because it’s supporting E Musk. And THAT is something I’m not happy about. He is getting more and more awful.

LifeExperience · 09/08/2024 15:37

Actually X announced yesterday that traffic is up 10% month-over-month and usage is now at an all time high.

BustingBaoBun · 09/08/2024 15:42

I'm still on there because I follow a lot and have over 2,300 followers BUT ...I really don't like Musk, and the site has changed for the worse since he took over. It was imperceptible to start with, but then became irritating.

But the thought of starting over with a new place ... for the moment I can't be arsed.
I just know my way round and I'm lazy

TheFormidableMrsC · 09/08/2024 15:48

I left after a decade. I can't bear the man. While I do miss the fun interactions I had on there, I wouldn't go back. The people I formed friendships with and meet up with are stjll part of my life. It's a shame, it used to be a real social thing for me when I had a small child and couldn't go out as a lone parent. He ruined it.

If I found myself agreeing with Musk about anything I would reconsider the issue in question. HTH.
