I think you mean you will be graced by the best pub crowds 😉

I certainly had an absolute blast back in the late 80s at a couple of pubs exactly like that. Some of it I can even remember!

At uni there used to be a fruit/tropical alcoholic drink called 'Castaway' that was mixed with Diamond White in a pint glass to make 'Blastaway'.

Yes I loved that!

Me too, god that’s a ‘blast’ from the past 🤣

We also used to get a ‘turbo shandy’ which was a Smirnoff ice & half of shandy 😁 or a cheeky vimto, blue wicked & port 😁

Oh God this brings back many half formed memories.

I had a boyfriend when I was about 16 years old used to get me a half lager with blackcurrant? I think. I hate lager. He kept buying me it and I kept on not drinking it. Then I discovered snakebites. Bloody loved it.

I think I got barred from many pubs. But fuck I had a good time. And then went to work all day on 2 hours sleep, same the next night. How in the hell I drank so much but continued working is beyond me now. I'm such a lightweight, half a bottle of wine and no more.

I fully remember the first time I got drunk, I was 14, i went home with the help of my boyfriend of the time (i forgot his name but i swear i was in love) and i held onto the fireplace with one hand, trying to not act pissed in front of my mum. I think she knew but let it go.

And these days you get parents asking if it's ok to let their 17yr old go to the shop alone. Different times man.

I was at a lounge in Dalaman this week. You can only have ONE free alcoholic drink. Anything else you had to pay for. At 24 euros for a glass of wine 😱

I refuse to go into the lounge at East Midlands now as after ordering 3 glasses of Prosecco in 2 hours they wanted to know what flight I was on to pre warn the cabin crew I was already pre loaded before I boarded the flight!!! 🤣

Nooo.
I had 5 voddy and tonics on plane (5.5hr flight) not one eyelid was batted

did the lounge include unlimited alcohol? A lot of them now enforce a limit of 3 or 4 drinks. So your one drink, would now be two.

As far as I know.
I just fancied a double.
I'm not a great flyer so it was mainly for nerves

The first time I got drunk I was 15. I'd been taken to the local no-questions-asked pub by my step brother where I discovered that lager really was quite tasty. Several pints later we staggered back home where my mum instantly spotted I was utterly pissed, not helped because I couldn't stop laughing. She was INCANDESCENT with rage.

I just want a fishcake and wine meal deal!
That's my idea of heaven.
Did anyone else drink Gold Label barley wine? I know we used to mix it with something but I've forgotten what.
Maybe it was just hardcore snakebite.
Yeah, I was a Goth ......

OMG. How could I have forgotten the little tins of Gold Label barley wine! Truly disgusting taste, but I persevered. Can you still buy them?

Yes. I buy them when making Christmas puddings.

MrsTerryPratchett · 09/08/2024 14:25

What was the goths' fortified wine? Clear I think. Tasted rank.

BaronessBomburst · 09/08/2024 15:22

I used to drink Stone's ginger wine. Blush

In the late 80s/early 90s I worked in a few bars that wouldn't serve snakebite.

So people bought a pint of cider & a half of lager, necked half the cider, then tipped the lager in.

Then kept buying alternate halves of lager & cider to top up.

So they got twice as pissed because they'd started by downing half their first pint so tended to keep that pace up, they were forever slopping stuff after miscalculating the space in the pint glass, we had more glasses to wash up because people who wanted to buy pints were having to buy it by the half AND when you finally got the damn pint glass back it took about 3x as much washing because it was totally crusty.

Don't even get me started on the ones who had blackcurrant/pernod/blue bols in it.

Genius rule.

Aww that has taken me back .

I was one who also asked for blackcurrant in my Snakebite
It had the right name as was venomous in its way (especially the following morning)

@Trinity65 you're a goddess. Thunderbird! Happy days (I think...).

Mitsky · 09/08/2024 15:31

All the lounges I’ve been in your pour your own!

notacooldad · 09/08/2024 15:36

Why would they do that, the bartender doesn't set the rules? Ridiculous when people take their frustration at petty rules out on (most likely) minimum wage employees
I totally agree with this. You see this advice been given out loafs here. It's not the staffs fault, they may lose their job if they bent the rules!

You are welcome

Some things I remember and some I don't.
It always used to drive me nuts, pre Internet, if I was watching something and couldn't, for the life of Me, recall what else I had seen them in . 😆

AuCo44 · 08/08/2024 16:34

Ugh, I have some very bad snakebite memories. How come we all got so pissed on it? It wasn't super strength cider mixed with strong lager, was it? More likely Woodpecker mixed with Skol. Yes, I am very old.

Depends upon whoever was making it. It could include something along the strength of white lightening + special brew and a vodka shot for good measure - all disguised by the sugar and some ribena to make it taste like a soft drink so the purchasers could drink 2-3 times as much alcohol as they'd be able to in ordinary situations.

NeverDropYourMooncup · 09/08/2024 15:57

Trinity65 · 09/08/2024 15:26

Thunderbird Blue, to be completely accurate.
