9 adults - one gluten free (intolerance). No other dietary requirements. One person doesn’t drink.

My friend has already offered to bring the dessert so not getting stuff for that and friends always bring something they would like to drink.

Currently sitting in my online shopping basket I have:

12 x gluten free burgers
12 x buns; 2x gluten free buns
12 x regular sausages
6 x gluten free sausages
1 x large block of halloumi for grilling

Skewers to make:

  • At least 12 x chicken tikka kebabs
  • At leas x Lamb kofta kebabs
(I am making these things because they are often not gluten free but easy to just make them naturally gf)

1 x sharing bag Doritos
1 x sharing bag of other crisps
1 x jar of olives
1 x pot of coleslaw
Ketchup
Mayonnaise
Burger Sauce

Cheese slices
Hummus

Ingredients to make:

  • one large potato salad
  • one large roasted vegetable cous cous

Drink (bearing in mind they will also bring their own)

15 cans lager
4 bottles of ale
1 bottle white wine
1 bottle sparkling wine
2 70cl bottles mixed summer gin drink thing
Ingredients for espresso martinis
3 bottles flavoured sparkling water

I'd like to come to your BBQ, sounds great!

GrassWillBeGreener · 07/08/2024 22:00

How big is the pot of coleslaw? I wonder if two might be a better plan?

Sounds great, hope you have a lovely time.

SaltandPepper22 · 07/08/2024 22:02

@GrassWillBeGreener its a 600g one

I’d probably add a bowl of salad - whether green or Greek.

More Doritos / dips too as people do love to nibble.

Mini corn on the cobs always go down well.

I tend to do 8 hour slow cooker ribs for a bbq too. But I’m a feeder 🤣🤣

Ginkypig · 07/08/2024 22:10

Is 2 gf buns enough?

or is it 2 gf burger buns and x no of gf hotdog buns

GrowThroughWhatYouGoThrough · 07/08/2024 22:17

I'd personally do all the food your cooking on the bbq gluten free as my sil is celiac and wouldn't be able to eat gluten free if gluten had been cooked on it. Also if your going to put butter on your buns you might need a new butter for the gluten free guest to use

Colddipinthemorning · 07/08/2024 22:19

Isn't that a lot of meat? Each person:

1 1/3 burgers
2 sausages
1 1/3 chicken skewers
1 1/3 lamb skewers

I'd drop one meat dish and go with something vegetable based and interesting. So maybe halloumi and veg kebabs or barbecued mushrooms stuffed with cheese, red onion and loads of mustard. Or fish?

Maybe some people could eat all that meat, but if you think about it, a burger and chips (or potato salad in this case) is a meal on its own usually.

LouH5 · 07/08/2024 22:38

Aw all this sounds lovely!

id say more halloumi and more crisps!

Have a lovely time :)

LightFull · 07/08/2024 23:45

I also like a charcuterie board and anti pasta stuff to nibble on along with hummus and crackers

Laska2Meryls · 08/08/2024 02:54

Quinoa contains a substance called Saponin which some people are highly reactive to and it gives them terrible gut pain and diarrhea ,( sadly I found this out the hard way so now avoid it ).. Its not uncommon but also not that known about I have found . I now avoid grain salads except when I make them myself as quinoa- being considered a superfood- is now very often part of the mix in supermarket and packet grain mixes .. Perhaps best check with your guests that none of them have had previous problems with eating it? .. Rice salad is GF( and you can make it in with same ingredients amd flavourings as couscous )

sashh · 08/08/2024 04:09

Do you have two BBQs? If not get a disposable one for the GF food.

ApolloandDaphne · 08/08/2024 05:22

You have rolls for the burgers but none for the sausages. Some people (like my DH) would want two rolls as well as everything else.

Moirarosesgarden · 08/08/2024 06:39

SaltandPepper22 · 07/08/2024 21:49

@Moirarosesgarden yeah I’m on the fence about buns. The GF person as their own bun so really it’s just 8 people for 12 buns. I never eat bread at BBQs (waste of calories when there is other stuff to prioritise) so that takes us down to 7. I have separate hotdog buns for sausages that I forgot to mention as well

Oh with the hotdog buns then it’s fine! Have fun!

ApolloandDaphne · 08/08/2024 06:52

Sorry. I didn't realise you said you had rolls for the sausages.

SaltandPepper22 · 08/08/2024 07:04

@sashh all the food is gf but she’s not coeliac it’s just an intolerance

SaltandPepper22 · 08/08/2024 07:07

@Moirarosesgarden thank you! The only thing I don’t have is a gf hot dog roll but I couldn’t find them and I think she will survive putting a sausage in a hot dog bun or eating a sausage with a side of potato salad!

In the past we have had her over and bought loads of gf wraps and she hasn’t eaten them and we have been stuck with them or had to send them home with her because not even my DH (who will pretty much snack on anything available) will snack on a gf wrap!

Personally I think any big BBQ feels a bit incomplete without a large, fairly plain salad.

I LOVE BBQ food. But all that meat, bread, coleslaw/potato salad, sauces, cheese - it's a lot of rich flavours.

Sometimes you just really need a mouthful of clean lettuce/cucumber/ tomato to freshen your palate and balance it out.

DrunkTinkerbell40s · 08/08/2024 07:23

Another vote for salad! I would always pile my plate up with the salad!

Chewbecca · 08/08/2024 07:32

I think that’s loads of protein and would struggle to get it all cooked. Do you have a massive grill & a warming area? I like to keep things simple otherwise takes too much away from mingling with my friends which is why we are there!

So I would simplify the meats and add corn on the cobs and a plain salad. I would also add veg to the skewers.

I would skip the non alcoholic drinks altogether- she’ll bring her own!

BUT - we all BBQ differently & I enjoy going to other people’s and seeing their way so it’s all good!

itsgettingweird · 08/08/2024 07:43

SaltandPepper22 · 07/08/2024 21:04

@Putting i can’t find any normal sausages in sainsburys that are gluten free…and the gluten free ones are so expensive!

I actually had salad stuff in my basket and then I was wondering if anyone would actually eat it of if it would just look nice and then go in the bin the next day 🤔

I agree. You shouldn't need to buy anything specifically GF for burgers and sausages.

Sainburys THD 12 pork chipolatas are on nectar price for £2.16 and are GF.

I do think a bag of mixed leaves, tomato and cucumber for a basic salad is a good idea.

Other than that I think it's fine. Make sure you have plenty of storage because that's a lot of food and I very much doubt it'll all be eaten and so you can freeze or put in fridge to save you cooking for a few days!

itsgettingweird · 08/08/2024 07:44

User478 · 07/08/2024 21:10

If you swap the couscous for quinoa then that's GF too?

Sainburys do GF cous cous.

I use it quite a lot

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 08/08/2024 07:49

I would skip the non alcoholic drinks altogether- she’ll bring her own!

I rarely drink and I'd be a bit put out if I was expected to provide my own drinks while the drinkers were catered for! I would ask the non drinker what she'd like, if it was me it would be a bottle of regular Coke or Dash sparkling water (no sweeteners) so would hardly break the bank.

Hopeful16 · 08/08/2024 08:04

Possibly too late BUT fried onions for the burgers and sausages-in-buns are always a bit here!

Yes to corn-on-the-cob. Obviously buy some green salad to throw away later (I always put out a mixed leaf salad at bbqs and end up throwing it away) 🤣 The only salad dish that I might add (especially if you have hungry teenagers around) is a pasta salad- maybe pasta and pesto!?!?!

Love that people are suggesting to add antipasti, etc! Maybe add a lasagne too!! These ideas just mean that people are already full by the main event being served.

Enjoy your bbq - I'm hoping that the sun shines for you ☀️

Hopeful16 · 08/08/2024 08:05

@PinkSparklyPussyCat the OP did say that all guests were accustomed to bringing their own drinks as their contribution.

MeinKraft · 08/08/2024 08:24

See your salad, if you make a plain one with just lettuce, chopped tomatoes and mix through pickled red onions that's always a massive hit when people come over here (and it tastes lovely in sandwiches too)
