If you know anyone that supports the riots…

I want to know, why do they? What do they think the riots are achieving besides destruction and more dividing? What is their reasoning if they even have one? Because to me it just seems like an excuse for people who have no hobbies to go out and cause mayhem

OP posts:

If I did, I wouldn't be speaking to them anymore.

Brain dead low-life scum.

MrsBennetsPoorNerves · 07/08/2024 13:51

I don't imagine that reasoning is really a strong point for them.

Hagpie · 07/08/2024 18:35

I was a bit scared yesterday, then pulled myself together and did some work to my front garden.

While there, my postie came and both he and my neighbour professed support for the riots. Saying “at least they’re defending us!” I don’t live anywhere near trouble but I’ve been hearing helicopters fly overhead all day. I do not feel safe in this country anymore.

You should have asked him what, precisely, is being "defended" by people looting knock-off Crocs from Shoezone.

ISawAMouse · 07/08/2024 18:40

I don’t know a single person who supports the riots thankfully.

the80sweregreat · 07/08/2024 18:44

I don't know anyone who supports it out loud, but I know of a few ex colleagues who probably do cheer it on behind closed doors. As long as it isn't anywhere near them of course or affect their loved ones.

Neither do I. I wouldn't be friends with racist arseholes. I have a better bullshit radar these days.

DrRiverSong · 07/08/2024 18:45

My uncle probably does but I don’t speak to him now so not sure! But based on previous form and his love of Reform I would not be surprised. He’ll be shouting from the comfort of his sofa though.

Halfaninch · 07/08/2024 18:46

Saw a post on a local FB page last night thanking the local "youngens" for keeping the town safe, when supposedly there may have been some MDL riots. There wasn't, because thats not happening round here. The sentiment is definitely there but I'd like to think scum like that dont move in MN circles.

Redcrayons · 07/08/2024 18:47

I certainly hope not.

fatphalange · 07/08/2024 18:47

I'd assume it's because they are extremely thick or bigots or both.

Sorry, you think this is caused by people not having hobbies??

Maybe they should take up golf, solves everything....

GalacticalFarce · 07/08/2024 18:49

A lot of people seem to not actually support the riots themselves but understand why they're rioting.
I think it's all been whipped up by media - both mainstream and social.
People are struggling and it's always useful to have a target for their anger rather than protesting against the government itself.

Newsenmum · 07/08/2024 18:52

I agree I’d like to actually know what the thinking is. Perhaps they think immigrants will leave?

Raasclaat · 07/08/2024 18:53

If you're looking for a female opinion on the matter, the only one I've seen "in the field" was on this footage I caught on youtube.

She fears for the future of her child, and also fears for the rape of her child. Not nice viewing, but here if you want a quick listen.

Lopine · 07/08/2024 18:55

A friend who works as a drug and alcohol support worker said that a substantial minority of the rioters outside of her property looked like addicts. She thought it plausible that they had been paid to attend. Not sure what to make of that. I guess it’s possible….

K0OLA1D · 07/08/2024 18:57

Yeah, well by association. A brother of one of my dps old school friends.

He's been all over some social media after being hit in the head with a hammer. Couldn't have happened to a nicer guy

Green777 · 07/08/2024 18:58

Russian propaganda along with far right bigots are feeding into/ off the concerns of ‘ordinary’ people that are easily misled (thick) that are happy to join in with the riots - a recipe for disaster.

AgentProvocateur · 07/08/2024 19:00

I don’t know any thick bigots, thankfully.

Bloom15 · 07/08/2024 19:02

I hope I don't know anyone who supports them! If I did I wouldn't be speaking to them again

Roselilly36 · 07/08/2024 19:04

No I don’t support the riots, or know of anyone that does.

owladventure · 07/08/2024 19:06

A couple of the people who've already been before court had references to long standing alcoholism, were drunk and piled in when they walked into it after pub closed. They weren't making reasoned decisions.

I don't think there is a lot of "reasoning" involved in mob behaviour anyway. There's plenty of research that shows that groups of humans behave completely differently to individuals - people stop behaving rationally. That's why the people who are stoking this are so dangerous.

Turophilic · 07/08/2024 19:07

I can’t imagine the Mumsnet demographic being a hotbed of riot sympathisers, so you might struggle to get a large sample, OP.

TheLightSideOfTheMoon · 07/08/2024 19:07

Someone I support professionally supports the riots.

He’s been handed down racism by his parents and doesn’t have the cognitive ability to understand why their views are wrong.

He’s incredibly vulnerable, believes what he’s been told and will blindly follow anyone who’s vaguely kind to him.

I suspect many of the rioters are in a similar position.

I have been wondering that.
