It was really a cruel trick of the Tories to make someone as dim and unsuited as Truss PM. In all seriousness I'd think she'd have a fair claim for abusive treatment in the workplace. It's akin to a bunch of teachers making a year 12 pupil headmaster for a day as a prank.

Maybe they thought she'd get the joke and play along. Imagine their horror when it dawned on them she really thought they were serious. Maybe she was inspired by Zelensky ?

It will be sobering in the long run to see if Trussonomics cost the UK more than Brexit. I have a feeling they might have.

Her election to leader demonstrated how shallow and immune to lies the Tory party membership has become. See also Boris Johnson.🙄

And racist. Remember she was the members choice (although I suspect you would be hard pressed to find a Tory party member who backed her) over Rishi.

HannibalHeyes · 15/08/2024 19:17

Exactly! She was only chosen because she was the only white candidate.

To be fair that was when the members were permitted to choose.

Left to their own devices MPs were much more happy to have Rishi. At the time that is.

I am mildly tickled by Priti Patel wanting to give members more power. Although not as much as the knowledge there are still some Young Conservatives out there https://www.theguardian.com/politics/article/2024/aug/15/young-tories-urge-party-to-broaden-appeal-after-rise-in-voter-crossover-age

Why on earth would a spunky 18 year old want want to be in a party where the average age of the membership is well into the 50s ?

Young Tories urge party to broaden appeal after rise in voter ‘crossover’ age

Age at which voters become more likely to choose Tories than Labour was 63 in July election, up from 39 in 2019

Look at that Fred though. Obviously wants to be an elderly Tory.

HannibalHeyes · 15/08/2024 20:01

Oh, the Harris campaign is deliciously trolling Trump now!

Well that was worth it then!

Looks like they’ve dropped the case against the climate activist who held a sign outside a court. I wonder how much the last government wasted on that.

I love it.😍

The government has confirmed that the victims of the infected blood scandal will receive financial support for life.

I'm so pleased to read this, this morning. One of our friends is directly affected by this, and the impact the whole delay re compensation by the last government has had on his mental health, is awful. Quite apart from the physical effects.

itsgettingweird · 16/08/2024 10:06

I was listening to it on R4 this morning.

Finally something has been done for these victims and I welcome the payments to both those infected and also those affected.

pointythings · 16/08/2024 15:16

I am seeing some negativity around the payments and I don't think I understand the reason sufficiently.

Meanwhile in other news, my son's replacement wheelchair is ready for collection after less than 2 weeks. Shout out to the best mobility shop in the world and their international manufacturing relationships!

That's brilliant news @pointythings

L1ttledrummergirl · 16/08/2024 15:44

Fabulous news pointy.

RafaistheKingofClay · 16/08/2024 15:45

Brilliant news, pointy.

pointythings · 16/08/2024 16:09

I am beyond delighted. Not only will he be able to return to uni in a good chair, it also means we will be able to do all the fun things we had planned for the week his sibling and partner are here, which we would have needed to cancel.

newnamethanks · 16/08/2024 16:12

Great news pointy, must be such a relief for you both.

Great news re wheelchair. And I hope his sprain is healing nicely too.

Yea I heard some quite challenging language to the paymaster general on the radio earlier. They have a payment scheme, clear categories you can claim for, a set amount for one group as an initial payment and will pay those affected too.
And it was still really challenging about if it was enough etc. he was quite right when he said would any amount of money ever be enough for what they've been through but the figures are suggested and have been accepted after a thorough process.

I kinda get what they are asking but I'm not really sure what it is they think should happen?

Perhaps some of the posters on the current Train Drivers thread need to get their heads round that.

I don't think that thread was started or meant to continue in good faith.

Why do Inquiries take so long in this country? It's torturous and inhumane. I lived in Ireland for a few years and they had pretty much sorted the Blood scandal in the early 00s.

The guilty have to be allowed enough time to stash assets, and confer to prepare a likely story.
