Can you get a tent with 3 bedrooms ?

If so can anyone link some decent ones ?
We've got 4 kids now and finding going abroad so much more money so I was thinking maybe we could get a good tent and try camping. All the tents I'm seeing though only have two bedrooms, there is a big age gap between the older kids and the little ones so ideally we'd need 3 bedrooms

I've got a tent with 3 bedrooms. I can't remember what it is though

Boater · 06/08/2024 10:51

There seem to be other ones too

Yes but with three kids I'd get four. Two kids can share one on their own, one for you and one for storage.

longdistanceclaraclara · 06/08/2024 10:53

Sorry misread, four kids, I'd still go four but two to each room and the last one for storage.

Tophelleborine · 06/08/2024 10:57

Are the older kids old enough to share a tent of their own? 6-person tents are HUGE and you might struggle to find good places to pitch it; two smaller tents would be more flexible. And as they get older they'll want their own space anyway.

When we first started camping, a good 15+ years ago, we bought a massive four bedroom tent. The kids had a bedroom each, we had one and we used one for storage. We only had one campsite that struggled to accommodate us but it was quite an unusual, quirky campsite.
As the years went on, everybody seemed to be buying larger and larger tents too.
I'd there are four of you and the children are a bit older then I'd go for a large tent.

Thanks everyone. Are large tents stupidly big then ?? How big is a pitch generally ? I guess we could get two but can't see ds9 wanting to be on his own in a tent

Ooh I like this one !!

You could pitch two smaller tents near to eat other and put a porch or tarp or gazebo in between them (just mind the edges don’t act as a streaming gutter over the tent roof in the event of rain!) as another option

namechangedforthisposttt · 06/08/2024 11:19

What gear do we need? Do we get blow up mattress' or camping beds ?

This could be an idea

I like this one but it looks bloody massive !! Do people frown upon such big tents ? 😆

Depends on the campsite to be honest. If it’s one big field like most, should be fine. Sometimes they state maximum pitch size available, or maximum tent size. All the sites I’ve been on have had “family” fields where I’ve seen monster tents.

Worth checking if your chosen site allows this: some sites state no “pup” tents and minimum 3M between tents as a fire break. Don’t know if that counts for family groups.

DumbassHamsterSitterPerson · 06/08/2024 11:23

I think the Vango or Berghaus ones linked would be better, they're easier to put up up due to the shape, and a better shape. I've never struggled to fit my large tents on a pitch.

Air mattresses with a blanket under them are fine. Plus a couple of blankets to go over your sleeping bag, until you know if you're a hot or cold camper (I rarely use a blanket, just my sleeping bag. But I'm a warm person.

Have you done any camping before? If not, whatever you decide on id go second hand rather than spend money on kit and then hate the whole thing!!

Inflatable mattress will be cheaper and pack down smaller. I find a camp bed more comfortable and warmer, more robust, room to put bags underneath but more expensive and bigger/heavier pack size.

I do like the shapes of those ones better to be honest

I second this. Fire safety on camp sites is critical. Think camping stoves, wobbly tables, alcohol being consumed, all mean that what might seem to the uninitiated a jobsworth rule is in reality a life saving fact.

namechangedforthisposttt · 06/08/2024 11:30

@GravitasShortfall Yeah we went every year when I was a kid so there won't be any shocks in store. I'm just trying to think of a cheaper way to holiday. I know I'll be expensive getting all the stuff at first though but once we've got it we haven't got to get it again

Have a great time. The investment will be worth it. If any of your kids are in Scouting or doing DofE, you might get some kind of discount at Outdoors shops Certainly worth asking.

Oh great, no worries on that front then. We had some bargain camp beds and mattresses from Facebook. Decathlon do some very well priced camping gear, just need to check the reviews. They also do “preloved” refurbished stuff, including tents, and often have other brands as well as their own.
