Riots - should King Charles make a statement?

I am not from the UK so I am not sure of the protocol in situations like the ongoing riots. I know that he and Camilla and the Prince and Princess of Wales issued statements following the murder of the three little girls in Southport.
Is it outside their remit to make similar statements about the riots? Would it be considered political interference?
Editing to add that I am sure the rioters won't give a flying fuck about him or what he says but can he show support for those whose livlihoods have been destroyed or who are in hotels that are being set on fire/

Only if it involves abdication.

TokyoSushi · 04/08/2024 22:21

Even if they did, I don't think it would make even a tiny bit of difference.

Only if it involves abdication.

That will not be happening thankfully.

No, I don't think he should make a statement. Why would he?

PoopedAndScooped · 04/08/2024 22:22

Nope - We need a ‘shoot to kill order’ put in place
That's what happened with the Croydon riots / Looting and it stopped straight away

Far right violent thugs!

Werweisswohin · 04/08/2024 22:22

I'm not sure that a priviliged wealthy person making a 'statement' would help really.

StSwithinsDay · 04/08/2024 22:23

Why would he?
He's the head of state isn't he?

Exactly.

Looking at the footage on telly, last thing it needs is elderly bloke in an ermine frock and a crown wagging his pudgy fingers at folk.

StSwithinsDay · 04/08/2024 22:25

For example, after the riots in Dublin last November, President Higgins issued the following statement
Statement by President Higgins on stabbings in Dublin city centre (23 November 2023)
“All of our thoughts are with each of the children and their families affected by today's horrific attack outside Gaelscoil Coláiste Mhuire in Dublin city centre.
We are particularly thinking of the 5 year old girl and the member of staff caring for her who are both in serious condition in hospital. All of our prayers are with each of them for a full recovery.
The Gardaí deserve all of our support in dealing with this incident. This appalling incident is a matter for the Gardaí and that it would be used or abused by groups with an agenda that attacks the principle of social inclusion is reprehensible and deserves condemnation by all those who believe in the rule of law and democracy.”

He holds the equivalent office in Ireland that Charles does in UK.

I don't recall the late Queen making statements in times of rioting?

StSwithinsDay · 04/08/2024 22:28

Maybe they should. Is there some law that says they can't?

OP posts:
TheLightSideOfTheMoon · 04/08/2024 22:28

What would he say?

”Off with their heads!”

I don’t think it would make a difference.

Appalonia · 04/08/2024 22:29

Ha I really don't think there's anything an obscenely wealthy man such as him could say that would have any positive, calming effect!

Unless he said he was going to donate a huge amount of his wealth to those deprived communities...

StSwithinsDay · 04/08/2024 22:31

What would he say?.
He is an intelligent man with years of experience of diplomacy in all sorts of situations. I'm sure he could come up with something that would show his support for the police, other emergency services, those who have experienced the sheer terror of their homes and property being burnt and who have looked with horror at the anarchy on their streets.

Look as I said I'm not from the UK. To me the silence from Charles and William is deafening. I am just curious as to why they can say nothing.

StSwithinsDay · 04/08/2024 22:33

If the Princess of Wales issued a statement would that be considered more worthwhile than anything Charles might say?

Good idea. Yes be really great if he did. For anyone not getting the point. The King is the literal actual DEFENDER OF FAITHS. Mosques are being attacked right now, in the UK. The shame of it.

I’m absolutely horrified about what’s happening and honestly our national sense of unity and trust is being smashed up and burnt by actual fascists before our eyes.
I have the luxury of just worrying about that horrific prospect. I am lucky enough not to have to be terrified daily for my personal safety or that of my family and community, or my place of worship. That’s because I am white.

I think they're not meant to comment in a way that shows their opinion but I can't see that's relevant here. Obv the opinion is that it shouldn't be happening and needs to stop.

It would be nice if he made a statement but it makes no odds.

I can't imagine that anyone expects the King to be getting involved in a relatively day to day matter

The riots are dreadful for the places involved but it's not like the whole country is affected

Is the reporting where you live possbly giving the wrong impression of who widespread it is?

Restinggoddess · 04/08/2024 22:38

Many would accuse him of getting involved in politics- which, due to the constitution, he should not do. His role is not the same as the Irish president.

This is the sort of thing that is referred to in the Christmas speech in a subtle way.

It’s not his place to make a statement about the riots - but no doubt it is a topic when he meets the PM every week

MoreCardassianThanKardashian · 04/08/2024 22:39

To clarify, it makes no odds to the people that are rioting. They won't stop because king sausage fingers said it's bad.

I'm shocked by the responses to the riots tbh. Lots of media coverage but I've not seen statements from the police etc. just kier who said he was calling it what it was and then didn't. It is far right thuggery but these are race riots. Not protests. I'm embarrassed to be British today.

StSwithinsDay · 04/08/2024 22:39

Well no. I am looking at the BBC, Independent, Guardian, Sky News and mumsnet! It seems fairly widespread to me. And horrific. The hotel in Rotherham which has been set on fire with people inside it. Is that not awful to you? Or are you saying that migrants in Rotherham are not that important really?

In 1938, the German authorities didn’t make any comment on Kristallnacht either.

fairydust11 · 04/08/2024 22:41

Personally I think it may help. It’s kicking off everywhere and nothing is really being said from the government apart from
they will regret it, which to me, seems like no deterrent at all.
I don’t know, I honestly think - does someone have to get killed before the army are called? How far will the government let it go, before actually doing something?
It is worrying as a British person of colour living in the uk, it feels like we have regressed back to the 1970s.
