Riots - should King Charles make a statement?

StSwithinsDay · 04/08/2024 22:20

I am not from the UK so I am not sure of the protocol in situations like the ongoing riots. I know that he and Camilla and the Prince and Princess of Wales issued statements following the murder of the three little girls in Southport.
Is it outside their remit to make similar statements about the riots? Would it be considered political interference?
Editing to add that I am sure the rioters won't give a flying fuck about him or what he says but can he show support for those whose livlihoods have been destroyed or who are in hotels that are being set on fire/

I don’t think it’s a good idea. They might turn up at his place if he does.

Rummly · 04/08/2024 23:03

Good call OP.

There’s nothing more dignified than making a formal address to the country about EDL violence.

Is that how it works in Ireland? Some thugs get busy in Dublin and the President goes straight on the telly?

mitogoshi · 04/08/2024 23:03

@StSwithinsDay

As it's a home office matter it is something the government is dealing with. The royal family don't get involved by convention

StSwithinsDay · 04/08/2024 23:06

@Rummly
No. He didn't 'go on the telly'. He released a statement. And it was welcomed by all those who were horrified by the attack on the children that afternoon and the subsequent riots in the city.

Only if it involves abdication.

Long overdue. It would be the first step towards dismantling the criminal establishment of this country.

But it won't happen. On we go with Starmer's "full force of the law". Tossers.

Is there no "criminal establishment" in republics then?!

Abdication would mean William becoming King. Is he held in higher regard than his father? Would he be bound by the constitutional strictures that prevent him speaking out?

Good idea. Yes be really great if he did. For anyone not getting the point. The King is the literal actual DEFENDER OF FAITHS. Mosques are being attacked right now, in the UK. The shame of it.

I’m absolutely horrified about what’s happening and honestly our national sense of unity and trust is being smashed up and burnt by actual fascists before our eyes.
I have the luxury of just worrying about that horrific prospect. I am lucky enough not to have to be terrified daily for my personal safety or that of my family and community, or my place of worship. That’s because I am white.

He is actually the “Defender of the Faith, as in the Church of England/Anglican faith, rather than faiths plural. So no as the rioters are attacking the places of worship of other faiths, under that title he has zero obligation to wade in and make a statement. I also agree with other posters a man of obscene privilege isn’t go to do anything except stoke the fires.

What does need to happen is getting the army involved and some length jail time meted out to rioters to protect these communities from Tommy’s fan club.

Lilysgoneshopping · 04/08/2024 23:17

No he won't. It's against Royal protocol to get involved in politics

PoopedAndScooped · 04/08/2024 22:22

Nope - We need a ‘shoot to kill order’ put in place
That's what happened with the Croydon riots / Looting and it stopped straight away

Far right violent thugs!

I just said something similar and the post was deleted. I stand by it though.

Allthegoodnamesarechosen · 04/08/2024 23:25

‘The King is the literal actual DEFENDER OF FAITHS.’

NO! He has the title Defender of the faith, that faith being Christian; it was given to Henry VIII by the Pope at the time, as a reward for writing a tract against Luther. Successive monarchs have kept the title, although not the Roman Catholic faith.

selfesteemfan · 04/08/2024 23:29

Probably be deleted but I say he isn't gonna say anything because they're a bit racist themselves that family.

I don't recall the late Queen making statements in times of rioting?

The late Queen kept out of political issues. It's for Keir Starmer to resolve.

Abdication first step, abolition of RF second step.

We don't have a constitution, just a bundle of ancient documents that the RF and arse-kissing politicians interpret as it suits.

LoveRosesClimbing · 04/08/2024 23:42

Standing corrected on the current title, but Charles as Prince did suggest the role should cover faiths decades ago. He has often taken an interfaith type approach to issues and he has an absolute moral responsibility here.

No he isn't, he is ‘Defender of the faith’ not faiths, he is the Supreme Governor of the Church of England he does not defend other faiths.

Ha! Hence the need to have helicopter pilots in the family - it’s a necessity when you’re leeching off an entire island and need to escape tout suite. He won’t but he should. His entire job description and justification for retaining the monarchy as our head of state boils down to national unity. The kind of people rioting think they are doing it for their country. Let the King get out on the balcony for something more than a fashion parade. Maybe he is writing black spidery letters to MPs on topics other than architecture and environmentalism.

I may be wrong about this - it’s no doubt a subject with a very complicated history - but I thought Defender of the Faith was actually a title bestowed by a Pope. So the faith to be defended is Roman Catholicism.

The title was bestowed on Henry VIII who famously did what he wanted with the nation's religion. The English Parliament re-bestowed the title on him in 1543 and things have gone downhill from there really

Interesting. Thank you.

Notonthestairs · 05/08/2024 00:13

King Charles' coronation oath followed traditional wording but was prefaced with an additional component - "to foster an environment in which people of all faiths and beliefs may live freely".

I think the confusion is linked to much earlier comments he made that he wanted to be considered defender of faith in general.

No, I don't think he needs to give a statement.

AvrielFinch · 05/08/2024 00:21

Why? If he says anything it will be bland and purely performative.

Agree this is for politicians and I can’t see that it would help anyway

AvrielFinch · 05/08/2024 00:25

The Royal Family are a waste of time whenever there are any real issues in the country. I am sure Charles has an investiture to carry out anyway and William is going to watch the football. They already have their hands full with their very important work.
