Split by room or person for Airbnb

Hello,

Airbnb booking for two rooms, I'm going with DH in one room and SIL in the second room (just her in the second room). Would you split the total bill 3 ways or per room?

Sorry it's a cottage (entire home) that has two rooms

I think 3 ways seems fair. I know 2 people are sharing 1 room but SIL paying 50% when there are 3 people using the electric etc seems unfair!

Ratherbeaspoonthanafork · 04/08/2024 22:17

Not sure might depend on a few factors size of the rooms, is one a lot nicer or bigger than the other, does either or both have an ensuite and maybe how financially well off is SIL.

Also if you are buying food drink or fuel costs this would have to be considered.

StormingNorman · 04/08/2024 22:18

Split by person.

User019715 · 04/08/2024 22:18

I think the rooms are exactly the same and financially she is a bit better off than mine and DH's salaries combined. Just wondering what the right thing is

Split by person.

Thank you. I think this is what we will do

I would suggest 60:40. It’s not really fair to go 50:50 when there will be 2 of you using the other rooms as well as the bedroom vs. just one of her.

Cherandcheralike · 04/08/2024 22:20

I'd usually split food by person and rooms by rooms. What does she think?

Blisterly · 04/08/2024 22:21

Per person. The single tax seems unfair.

Branleuse · 04/08/2024 22:25

Awkward. Just don't go.

KrumPot · 05/08/2024 07:50

Split per person.
Cottage for 3, split 3 ways

Ratherbeaspoonthanafork · 05/08/2024 18:53

60:40 sounds fair re room and split any food, drink, petrol costs between 3.

50/50. Pay for rooms. More than fair.

MidnightPatrol · 05/08/2024 18:54

In this situation I’d do per person.

AgnesX · 05/08/2024 18:55

Three ways of course, why would you do anything different - you're three adults.

BCBird · 05/08/2024 18:56

3 ways

Epicaricacy · 05/08/2024 19:01

I split per room, why should 1 room cost double the cost than the other?

If DH wasn't going, it would be the same price.

PeachyKeane · 05/08/2024 19:03

We go on holiday a lot with family and always split costs by rooms.

SunQueen24 · 05/08/2024 19:04

Definitely per person.

Gizlotsmum · 05/08/2024 19:07

I normally split by room but as a family we normally take the majority of rooms so that seems fair. In this situation unless sil is suggesting the split I would do by person

2024onwardsandup · 05/08/2024 19:09

Per person of course - unless you and your dh are going to use the same plate and sit on the same dining room chair?

Sunshineafterthehail · 05/08/2024 19:10

Surely sil gets the better deal? Double bed to herself!!

Epicaricacy · 05/08/2024 19:12

that makes no sense, if only 2 people went, airBnB wouldn't charge less.

Ponkpinkpink15 · 05/08/2024 19:13

I think if the rooms are each as big/nice you split by room (and I'm single). I never
mind taking the smallest room if there is one, but don't expect to pay the same as the couple in the king size, ensuite room.

in your case, the air BnB is the same cost as it would be if only you or DH were going instead of both of you, its 2 rooms. It's fair to split 50:50. Yes, you're paying the same as her, but you are sharing the space.

Vanillalime · 05/08/2024 20:08

You could split the total cost in 2 halves (bedroom cost and shared space cost). So as an example if the Airbnb total cost is £500:

Bedroom costs - £250
You & DH cost is £125
SIL cost is £125

Shared space cost - £250
You and DH cost is £166.66
SIL cost is £88.33

Totals
You & DH - £291.66
SIL - £208.33
