UK unions are not necessarily politically neutral. Many are affiliated to specific parties. For example here are some Labour affiliated unions https://labour.org.uk/about-us/affiliated-unions/

The Police union in the UK is not on that list and is supposed to be neutral. Of all unions you would want the police to be neutral.

That sounds great but how would it work if he wins?

We're totally fucked and the Constitution had red sharpie all over it

Absolutely agree.

In the US though in terms of political partisanship the Police union backing one candidate is the least of their concerns when much of the judiciary (including judges and prosecutors) are politically appointed figures. Yes there is an expectation of neutrality and treating everyone fairly but we know how that turns out in practice.....

AcrossthePond55 · 09/09/2024 16:10

US unions are free to endorse political candidates, it's covered under the 1st Amendment. I'm a former Fed and our union freely endorsed candidates. Our union did canvassing prior to endorsement to determine which candidate had majority backing from the membership. Not all unions observe this protocol.

As far as Trump's sentencing being delayed, I can see the point. There is no way the sentencing wouldn't be turned into fodder for Trump's lies and conspiracy theories. It would once again turn the media spotlight directly on him and his bullshit to the detriment of Harris getting her message out. Merchan was savvy in delaying.

As far as what would happen if Trump wins, well, it's a state trial so he has no power to dismiss the case & thus invalidate his conviction, nor can he pardon himself. Theoretically there's nothing saying a POTUS can't go to jail and nothing to say he can't serve as POTUS whilst incarcerated. We are completely in uncharted territory. Nothing about this situation has ever arisen nor been tested in the courts. So, we shall see. Or rather, hopefully we shall NOT see, because he loses.

That being said, I think there's zero chance of incarceration (dammit!) and 100% chance of his conviction being appealed all the way to SCOTUS. Assuming Harris wins, the smart thing to do would be to try to get Thomas or Alito to retire ASAP so they can be replaced by a Harris appointee before the case gets through lower appeals. Chances of either of them stepping down are less than zero. Maybe they'll try to convince Roberts, but he's only 69 so not likely to step down. The other worrisome bit is that if he wins, Sotomayor or Kagan will be pressured to step down or something may befall them to force retirement. Then Trump would have another pick and his conviction overturn will be guaranteed on some pretext or other.

I've decided to watch the debate with my finger firmly on the mute button. DH plans to decamp to the bedroom to watch "something else, anything else". We'll DVR so he can fast fwd the next day. I have promised DH that I will confine my responses to muttered obscenities and refrain from throwing the remote through the TV screen.

What are your thoughts for the debate? I have a vague feeling of nausea when I think about it. I really hope she smashes it but I just don't know at this point that she will (maybe its my old brain being pessimistic!)

Thank you @AcrossthePond55 that was really helpful.

AcrossthePond55 · 09/09/2024 17:07

@Igotjelly

I certainly believe that Harris can hold her own in a debate. But if Trump pulls 'antics' anyone can blow a gasket. I think as long as Trump stays at his podium and doesn't try to shout over her or make loud disparaging 'noises' when his mic is cut I think she'll be OK. If he pulls 'antics' then he may get that same response as Pence did: 'The Look' (she has the 'mum look' down to perfection) and a stern "I am speaking". Whether or not it'll phase him is another thing. She cannot allow herself to be derailed. But as a former prosecutor I'm sure she's used to dealing with nastiness and threats from defendants a lot 'scarier' than Trump. And I'm sure her practice sessions have included a lot of 'Trump tactics'.

I also think he's best dealt with by big eyerolls and simply addressing that what he said is lies/wrong without getting tied up in unraveling his lies. Just say something short and simple to refute and then move on to stating your platform. People need to know what she has planned, we've already heard Trump's rhetoric & lies rebutted countless times from countless reliable sources.

BruceAndNosh · 09/09/2024 18:10

What Harris is expecting...
There’s no floor for him in terms of how low he will go,” Harris said in an interview with Rickey Smiley that aired this morning.
We should be prepared for that. We should be prepared for the fact that he is not burdened by telling the truth. And we should be prepared for the fact that he is probably going to speak a lot of untruths.
“I think he’s going to lie,” Harris added.

In other news, the Pope is Catholic 😁

Wallaw · 09/09/2024 18:20

Debating whether to stay up for it (UK time). I stayed up for the Biden one and think I might have debate ptsd.

I know I've said this before, but I can't unsee that Trump's mouth looks like a talking butthole. If he wins, I don't know what's worse - the destruction of a couple hundred years of democracy or having to watch/listen to the orange butthole for four more years (or 8 or 10 or 25, whatever).

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 09/09/2024 18:33

OMG I'm glad I'm not the only one who thinks his mouth looks like a butthole when he speaks! The way he scrunches up his lips into a little tiny 'hole' is nauseating. Oooky for sure.

Spandauer · 09/09/2024 22:52

My, oh my! 🙀
I really feel like we've fallen through the looking glass.

(from Washington Post)
Seemingly out of the blue Monday morning, supporters of former president Donald Trump began posting myriad AI-generated images depicting the Republican presidential nominee as a savior. Not of the American Dream or of Christianity, mind you, the normal targets of such praise. Instead, Trump was shown protecting ducks and kitty cats. If you are not a denizen of the right’s conversational bubble, this will probably strike you as incomprehensible. If you are such a denizen, though, you know what’s happening: Trump and his allies — and his running mate! — are elevating false or unsubstantiated claims about immigrants injuring and eating pets and other animals. And of course, blaming the Biden administration and Trump’s opponent, Vice President Kamala Harris, for this thing-that-is-not-demonstrably-happening happening.

^^
The claim centers on Springfield, Ohio, a small city a bit southwest of the state capital of Columbus. A screenshot of a Facebook post purportedly from a local resident warns that the author’s neighbor’s daughter’s friend had discovered that her neighbors — supposedly Haitian immigrants — were trying to eat her cat. She also claimed (this time crediting “Rangers & police”) that similar fates were befalling ducks and geese at a local park.

^^
This message was clipped and shared by a putative breaking-news account on X, the platform formerly known as Twitter. It was paired with a photo of a Black man carrying a goose and walking down a street. In short order, the post was picked up by a number of prominent voices on the right, including Trump adviser Stephen Miller. From there it metastasized, with people plucking pieces of information off the internet and attaching it to the original claim as though it was supporting evidence. A guy at a community meeting mentioned the ducks! An Ohio woman was recently arrested for eating a cat! Just proves the point.
^^
Except that the guy carrying the goose was photographed in Columbus a month ago and is not obviously an immigrant from Haiti, much less one in Springfield.

^^
And except that the woman arrested for eating the cat was also not obviously an immigrant — and was arrested in a different Ohio town about 100 miles northeast of Springfield.

^^
And except that the local police say they have no reports of pets being stolen in a manner consistent with the posts. That guy who mentioned the ducks? A local podcaster wearing a sweatshirt promoting his mayoral bid in next year’s election.

^^
None of this stopped Trump’s running mate, Sen. JD Vance (R-Ohio), from jumping into the fray. “Months ago, I raised the issue of Haitian illegal immigrants draining social services and generally causing chaos all over Springfield, Ohio,” he posted on X. “Reports now show that people have had their pets abducted and eaten by people who shouldn’t be in this country. Where is our border czar?”
Reports don’t “show” that, certainly, and the video clip Vance linked, from several months previously, includes no similar allegations. Instead, it focuses on the strain on public services and particularly housing that the town faced in light of the increase in new arrivals, an issue common to other places as well. What’s more, the Haitian immigrants at issue aren’t there illegally, as the city’s website explains. But the conversation in Vance’s universe was focused on the purported threat to Springfield’s cats, so he jumped right on in.

So did X’s owner, Elon Musk, as you might expect. The guy who bought Twitter with the explicit aim of making it friendlier to outlandish right-wing claims helpfully pointed out the eating-cats thing to activist Charlie Kirk, lest Kirk have missed that component of the fearmongering.

The story snowballed from various unverified reports, with people all over X and other platforms chucking their own little hunks of snow at it. In MAGA world, the alleged pet-eating is already a matter of fact, and Republican elected officials, including Vance, are hurrying to join the clout rush, the scramble to get attention and likes and followers by treating it as a serious issue.

This is a central reason that Vance and others on the right are susceptible to being described as “weird.” There’s an online world in which things get taken to the nth-degree because its economy rewards that sort of hyperbole. But then these obsessions and claims are taken out of that bubble and presented to everyone else and they don’t hold up. What else can you do but marvel at how strange it all is?

I just assumed that it doesn't work that way in the USA, but I could well be wrong, obviously. We'll just have to wait for one of the posters from the States to wake up and enlighten us on this matter Grin

In my town, at a local level, the police endorse republicans and the fire fighters endorse democrats. Fortunately if you call 911, they tend to dispatch both and an ambulance for good measure. I feel like that keeps everyone honest and pleasant.

A Beautiful ad. The Best ad ever. Beautiful, just perfect. The perfect ad. Said Trump never.

I'm glad that the Harris/Walz campaign is pulling no punches. We have less than 60 days to get the message across.

I think it’s pretty unlikely she’ll endorse Harris, she a been pictured over the last few days hugging Brittany Mahomes who’s known to be a Trump voter. I’ve seen rumours her family are concerned about her alienating Trump voters because they think he’s probably going to win.

One can dream though!
