@AskingQuestionsAllTheTime Guardian reporting that Dick Cheney says he'll vote for Kamala.
Every little helps, as they say.
https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/article/2024/sep/06/dick-cheney-vote-kamala-harris

And Liz very wholeheartedly endorsed Allred over Cruz in Texas, which could potentially be huge.

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 07/09/2024 17:06

The sooner Cruz is noted only in history books, the better, as far as I am concerned, though he may not be the nastiest Republican

I offer you
Sarah Huckabee Sanders
Ron DeSantis
Brian Kemp
Kristi Noem
Greg Abbott
Glenn Youngkin

I could do without all of them.

I was thinking of State Governors; I absolutely agree with you that there are some total stinkers in the Houses.

Is the the same Ted Cruz who - as a storm was flying into Texas - was flying out ahead of it. To Cancun ?

Or another Ted Cruz.

You aren't in a great place if people 4,000 miles away remember you as a twunt.

(The reason I know this is it pops up if you Google Ted "the lose" Cruz).

prettybird · 07/09/2024 19:58

What shocks me is that, given Cruz' history of not giving a fuck about Texans, he is still ahead in the polls ShockConfused

But there again, we wonder the same about why the fuck Trump could still win Sad

The way some people's minds in the Trump cult work is beyond comprehension Confused

One commentator online suggested Merchan delayed sentencing Trump because he intends to give a custodial sentence and doesn't think he can do that so close to the election..

BruceAndNosh · 08/09/2024 21:39

I'm beginning to get really nervous about the upcoming debate. I remember the despair reading the reviews the morning after the Biden one. Please let this be better.
It's not that Harris will be awful, it's more that Trump is so fluent in lying. She either ignores it and let's him bullshit he way through or she spends all her alloted time fact checking him and doesn't have time to say her own stuff

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 08/09/2024 21:43

I would be happy if she simply said something like "I counted five (six, three, eleven) lies in that speech by Mr Trump, but what I am here to say is" and then went ahead with her own stuff. Every time he'd lied. It wouldn't take very long, she could just put ticks on her pad each time he did it, count them, say it and then get on with the more interesting stuff.

That sounds great but how would it work if he wins?

That would be perfect.

Igotjelly · 09/09/2024 07:43

I really do think a custodial sentence is highly unlikely for a first time non-violent offence.

Igotjelly · 09/09/2024 07:43

Much as I’d love to see his smug face behind bars!

Why am I not surprised, though shocked? Is it just me, or does it not demonstrate the truly parlous state of the forces for law and order in the US?

I also find it shocking that a police union should endorse ANY candidate. Shouldn't they be neutral?

I just assumed that it doesn't work that way in the USA, but I could well be wrong, obviously. We'll just have to wait for one of the posters from the States to wake up and enlighten us on this matter Grin

Igotjelly · 09/09/2024 08:24

Even in the UK many of the unions are politically affiliated and will endorse parties during elections. Unions in the US are deeply political, as are many other bodies. The Fraternal Order of the Police carried out a ballot of its members and that's how they decided which candidate to formally endorse. So it's reflective of their membership.

PaminaMozart · 09/09/2024 08:08

Same. The UK version is supposed to have no political affiliation.

Zonder · 09/09/2024 08:29

Yes, I think we're talking here specifically about police unions having political affiliations, it's understood that other unions endorse specific candidates, and possibly back them financially, I think?

Igotjelly · 09/09/2024 08:58

UK unions are not necessarily politically neutral. Many are affiliated to specific parties. For example here are some Labour affiliated unions https://labour.org.uk/about-us/affiliated-unions/

I think Trump promised the police more protection against being sued/ prosecuted, I think. So I'm not surprised.

Igotjelly · 09/09/2024 09:32

I do wonder if it’s reflective too of the gender divide we’re seeing in terms of polling. A quick google tells me 85.8% of police officers roughly in the US are male, 70% are white and the average age is about 40 - these are all representative of the group we’re seeing Trump being most successful with.

PaminaMozart · 09/09/2024 09:42

I understand that a lot of unions are affiliated with or support certain parties. I'm fine with Teamsters, for instance, supporting the Democratic party.

However, i believe that the police should get independent. Their role is to protect everyone, irrespective of political affiliation, socioeconomic status, race, colour, etc - everyone.

Given the many, many instances of crimes committed by police officers 'in the line of duty', especially against POC, you'd think they'd be scrupulous about appearing to be independent.
