Seems Jeff Walz is a Repulican donor. Not sure how damaging that’ll be. Siblings are allowed to differ politically but if he gets personal & digs up dirt then…

NotDonna · 01/09/2024 08:08

Oh! Hardly a donor. It was $20! But there’s a big 8yr rift. Ugh could get messy.

Igotjelly · 01/09/2024 08:09

The background checks for VP are extensive, I can’t imagine there’s anything he could dig up that they aren’t already aware of.

I agree - and Walz is aware enough to have flagged his own brother during the vetting process I would guess! (TBF though - they had to do a speedy check this time)

Thinking about it - most of the recent presidents have had a at least one "troublesome" relation in a cupboard somewhere 😄 (Obama may be one that didn't/doesn't?)

Trump is cheap if $20 can buy you a platform 🤣

countrygirl99 · 01/09/2024 08:48

I think everyone has at least 1 troublesome relative. If that was a bar only people from a long line of only children would be candidates and even some of them would struggle.

BruceAndNosh · 01/09/2024 08:49

Trump is flip flopping all over the place. His unrealistic promise to support funding for IVF shows he's desperate that he's losing voters

Zonder · 01/09/2024 08:49

Mind you, if it was a bar then trump would be out. Perhaps it should be considered...

I'm post menopausal and have no DD nor DGDs to worry about. Even so, that ad actually made my gut clench and gave me a really feeling of anxiety. If I, who have no personal 'skin in the game', has such a visceral reaction I can only imagine what a woman in her reproductive years must feel.

I hope it reaches women (and men) who are waffling about reproductive freedom. And personal freedom, too. What might be next? Tightening up divorce laws because 'the sanctity of marriage must be preserved' and trapping women (and men) in abusive marriages?

If Trump isn't defeated and the Project 2025 bastards get their way, are we looking and Gilead 2.0?

Praise be

Oh the irony…from what he said, the only way his “plan” would make sense is if it were implemented under the Affordable Care Act. You know…the bill he nearly had killed, it it weren’t for John McCain’s “no” vote. Also known as Obamacare.

Not to mention that his henchman are working on banning IVF. It's so ludicrous it's beyond belief.

SerendipityJane · 01/09/2024 11:16

Seems the cooler heads are suggesting that plan Trump is on track. The election result will be irrelevant (as he said, he doesn't care if you vote). And that's simply because he'll shout that it was rigged, he own, and let the bodies fall where they do.

At this point, my fear - as a detached UK resident - is how this fits into the international stage. I really hope our own political and diplomatic advisors - with accumulated millennia of experience - have a plan for dealing with a country the size of the US where the results of a democratic election cannot be validated. I obviously feel for US citizens caught up in this too. But we are closer to a nuke-totin' Putin on the eastern side.

As an American resident in the UK I get the best of both worlds. Closer to Putin and undetached from the US ramifications. Sigh.

That is a splendid riposte.

AcrossthePond55 · 01/09/2024 17:33

"Problem" relatives....Billy Carter (anyone remember 'Billy Beer'?), Neil Bush (shady financial dealings), Roger Clinton (bribes &attempted influence peddling) amongst others. Unless Walz' brother comes up with something unbelievably 'unsavoury' no one is going to give a shit, other than Trumpers who will make a huge hoo ha out of nothing.

Maybe I'm being naive, but I feel that the days of 'America sneezes and the World catches cold' are pretty much gone. Especially since 2016. I think that the 'Nations of Power' (UK, France, Germany et al) saw that the US can be destabilized just as any 3rd World Country can and have taken what precautions they are able to take to 'US-proof' their own countries. Not saying that there won't be some sort of knock on effect should Trump win, but I think it will be mitigated in countries who have more ability to safeguard themselves and their citizens. I do worry about smaller, 3rd world, and less stable countries, though.

Fall of Empires. We know how this ends. And why.

Whilst I think this is true to an extent it’s also true that Europe can’t look after its own security at this point, it’ll take years of serious investment. If Trump withdraws from NATO or even alludes (as he has done before) to the fact that he wouldn’t necessarily come to an ally’s defence then Article 5 is all but worthless. Without the US Europe is at serious risk from Russia and other malign actors.

Igotjelly · 01/09/2024 18:18

And whatever the media says the US still holds weight with Israel and in the Middle East. Without this influence, and frankly probably encouraged by Trump, a regional conflict with Iran is all but certain. I can’t imagine for a second a Trump administration doing the frantic regional diplomacy that we’ve seen Blinken etc. undertaking recently.

Well it couldn't when Rome collapsed. so why should it now ?

Some might feel that Byzantine will rise again given how long it held out.
