YouTube comments from Conservatives say things like "if you don't want to get pregnant, just don't have sex" without thinking about all those poor horny men who wouldn't be keen to have Abstinence as their method of contraception

If they want to go down this path, it would be much easier if all men had a vasectomy and when they wanted to have children, it could be reversed. I believe it's not so difficult to do that now.

I'm all for mass vasectomies for Conservative men! Somehow I can't see it getting much support...

God forbid the US ends up like El Salvador where women have jailed after having miscarriages

It is already happening.

Jaichangecentfoisdenom · 28/08/2024 15:19

OMG, I didn't know about El Salvador - and now the US? That's absolutely shocking.
Flowers @BruceAndNosh - I sympathize, I also had problems with my own pregnancies, It's bad enough when you're losing a much-wanted pregnancy, but to be imprisoned because of what your own body has unwittingly done to you is another level of horror. And what about early miscarriages, which I think are known as "chemical pregnancies", which can happen even before a woman is aware she's pregnant? Are women to be jailed for those, too?
On a slightly different tack, I'm just remembering something particularly ghastly which happened in Ireland some years ago, before the abortion vote there. "Savita Halappanavar (née Savita Andanappa Yalagi; 9 September 1981 – 28 October 2012) was a dentist of Indian origin, living in Ireland, who died from sepsis after her request for an abortion after a prolonged miscarriage was denied on legal grounds." (Taken from Wikipedia.)

@SerendipityJane

I wonder what the effect on polling would be if all the women who secretly hated Trump pulled a Lysistrata on their Trump loving spouses? Or the wives/husbands of legislators who disagreed with their Trump supporting/MAGA agenda spouting spouses?

I know there have to be some of them out there.

My concern with that would be marital rape.

I'm not sure how confident I'd feel refusing sex to a husband who has three rifles in his office and a handgun in his bedside table...

Well, she may very well be packin' herself. Or at the least have the combo to the gun safe. Or he thinks she does.

Wallaw · 28/08/2024 18:14

There are some states that are probably not too far off making it legal for a man to shoot the lil woman if she doesn't fall into line, But not vice versa, of course.

I'm sorry for your struggles with pregnancy and fertility. It's such a devastating and personal thing to go through.

How do we think Kamala is going to do in the CNN interview? It’s at 9PM ET which is 2AM UK time. Last time I woke up to anything like that it was Biden fluffing the debate 😑😭

I think she'll be fine. She's with Walz (although I don't know if they're going to be quizzed at the same time) and Dana Bash was chosen by the campaign to do the interview. Fox are (of course) already saying that Bash is biased towards Harris and historically hostile to Trump.

She does need to ask some challenging questions though otherwise it will be painted as a set up/easy ride etc etc.

If Harris doesn't cope with the interview then we're definitely back in deep doo-doo! 😭

It's official. Mics will be OFF for the non speaker during September 10th debate.

The US Army

New: The Army is now rebuking Trump campaign staff over the Arlington National Cemetery incident.

"Participants in the August 26th ceremony and the subsequent Section 60 visit were made aware of federal laws, Army regulations and DoD policies, which clearly prohibit political activities on cemetery grounds. An ANC employee who attempted to ensure adherence to these rules was abruptly pushed aside."

"This incident was unfortunate, and it is also unfortunate that the ANC employee and her professionalism has been unfairly attacked. ANC is a national shrine to the honored dead of the Armed Forces, and its dedicated staff will continue to ensure public ceremonies are conducted with the dignity and respect the nation's fallen deserve."

Will it make a difference?

Apparently Trump's campaign thinks it will.

Trump’s advisers have also been buoyed by the likelihood that microphones will be muted when it is not a candidate’s turn to speak, believing it defangs Harris in being able to fact-check him in real time and in her ability to make quips of her own.
The muted microphones have been a particularly big deal for Trump’s advisers, who internally have been repeatedly pushing for “CNN rules”, in a reference to the disastrous CNN debate with Biden last month when microphones were muted.

Trump campaign strategy pivots to praying he wins September debate.

I would question the word "thinks" there.

A long and detailed look into counterfactuals - with real historians - shows there really isn't a "pivotal moment" in history. Yes, we think there is. But that's just because we are part of it.

If Team Trump think a single debate will somehow win them the election, then I have a warehouse full of bridges they can buy.

We like big moments. It makes things easy to explain. But it's not really like that.

Trump's campaign team are as desperate and despicable as he is. Irresponsible words and deeds. What a surprise - Men gaslighting a female worker.

I haven’t watched the full interview yet but from what I’ve seen so far it hardly seemed to set the world alight unfortunately. Hopefully solid enough to silence those demanding she does an interview but it did seem she waffled in parts.

I won't be watching the interview, but I found this review of it interesting:
https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/article/2024/aug/29/harris-walz-interview-election

As ever, I am completely flummoxed at anyone who would willingly vote for someone as abnormal as Trump, and more, that there are apparently so many of them that it is not axiomatic that the Harris/Walz ticket will be elexted by a landslide in November.

Kamala Harris’s much-hyped, first big interview was ... radically normal

Just like at the Democratic convention, the vice-president did enough to clear the bar and do herself no harm

Igotjelly · 30/08/2024 08:58

Agree it’s utterly baffling why anyone would vote for him but I do think the race will be close, particularly with regards to the electoral college votes.
