That's really interesting @Efacsen I was just thinking how different it is in the US from the UK. You'd never get thousands of people at a rally just to hear a candidate speak (other than the party conferences I guess).

For Republicans it's a day out. For their carers it's a day off.

😆

And what about the democrats? The non-imaginary ones of course.

prettybird · 12/08/2024 11:51

"Party conference" is probably the best analogy. Remember that each state is pretty much a country - and remember that that they're each separately important because of the electoral college (The swing states even more so).

So these rallies are the equivalent of a party conference in each state.

Ignore the Rust Belt/mid West at your peril - as Clinton discovered to her detriment in 2016, even though she won the popular vote Shock

I am a little bit at a loss to discuss US politics as the tribalism is bizarre.

Yes, we have the same "die hards" on this side of the pond. But not to the same depth. Neither the Labour nor Tory parties are treated as if put here by God almighty, Even if that's how they act.

The new cover of the Time

Oh that's great. I hope they're right. I feel her winning will have such huge symbolic as well as social and political significance, far beyond the US.
A big historic change.

Hopefully he'll eventually be left with only the Benny Hill theme tune.

Something that doesn't need a soundtrack other than a silent scream.

Remember I said Trump will claim it's all a dream ?

WEST PALM BEACH, Florida — A top adviser to Donald Trump described the state of the race on Thursday as “suspended reality,” arguing Kamala Harris will not be able to sustain her surge.

halava · 12/08/2024 16:29

Slow and steady Harris and Watz. Do not peak too soon. Do not leave any aperture open for the attack dogs to enter. Do not insult and mock your opponents. Stick to the facts and policy. If you don't want to do pressers, then don't, they are an avenue that allows criticism and derision/mocking. Stick to the rallies. Stay classy and dignified.

Best of luck.

halava · 12/08/2024 19:55

Walz obv. 😊

BruceAndNosh · 12/08/2024 20:20

Both Vivek Ranaswamy and Kevin Mccarthy have said in interviews that Trump needs to shut up about Harris's Crowd size

Neither Musk nor Trump will like this - but it won't change they lies they spread what they do Hmm

BREAKING: The European Union has issued a formal letter to Elon Musk, demanding that he censor Donald Trump in their upcoming interview.

The EU warns of "legal obligations" if Musk does not take action to prevent the spread of "disinformation."

There's not much they can do to Musk. !st amendment and all that

prettybird · 12/08/2024 21:31

@SerendipityJane - I agree, no, there's not much they can do to Musk.

But I'm not sure what the consequences of a breach of the DSA are? Would the EU be able to levy a fine on X's operations within the EU?

Wallaw · 13/08/2024 02:17

This interview is almost as much of a car crash as the debate was for Biden. It sounds like Trump forgot to put his teeth in.

This pretty much sums it up, at least the bits I've heard

Just listening to a few mins of the conversation. I switched off when he said he had 'catch and release' programmes running in Mexico. Like humans are wild animals. I'm not surprised he used the phrase but hearing it - nauseating. I'll stick with a fact check article.

BruceAndNosh · 13/08/2024 08:21

The lack of comment on Fox about the interview tells me it wasn't great for Trump, considering how heavily they were promoting it beforehand

Zonder · 13/08/2024 08:26

So it happened? I haven't seen anything about it at all! Mind you I haven't been on twitter yet this morning.

Spandauer · 13/08/2024 08:32

Also didn't bother to listen. Haven't found much coverage either. People probably tuned out when the technical glitches happened.

Saw this on Twatter:
Hopefully the people working on the Neuralink chip Elon wants to plant in our brains doesn't overlap with the team in charge of the live audio blog he can't get to work.

The BBC report is useless (BBC Breakfast did an anodyne couple of sentences and said there was a full report on their website but when I checked it didn't actually add much, apart from a headline that it was a "friendly chat" and a throwaway comment that there was a series of unsubstantiated claims that went without challenge. Confused
